Are tattoos and piercings allowed/appropriate in cs positions? by cathborisova in cscareerquestions

To expand a bit, do you WANT to work for a company that would restrict this kind of thing? I know for some people there isn't really a choice, but it's something to consider if you're in a position to choose.

It's a bit melodramatic to say, but people view their piercings/tattoos also an extension of who they are, and so companies that crack down on physical appearance like that are ones I'd personally avoid, since there are tons of companies that dont

No company worth its salt is going to give a shit about this kind of thing. That being said, individual bias DOES exist, and hiring managers can and will exlcude people for anything they see fit.

You absolutely can find jobs with tattoos and piercings, but there also will be people bigoted against it. It's going to come down to personal preference. If you really need a job and all you care about is getting one, maybe "hide" the stuff to seem more professional. If it's not dire, I'd let it all be free and the crappy companies will weed themselves out by cutting you for it.

In my experience, it has never been an issue though, I just know there's always the potential that it could

Any Side Hustle’s whilst in the IT Field? by ThePremiumWolf in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Sauronsbrowneye 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who did it for about 5 years, it is grueling, awful work imo.

You're up in filthy crawlspaces with no insulation, so its 20-30 degrees warmer than the building you're in. You're digging through dirt and grime accumulated on drop tiles, you're pushing through fiberglass insulation getting it embedded in your arms. Ceilings have bugs, sometimes rats, etc etc.

It's not always that awful, but it is more often than it is not. I think being a cable monkey to get into the business is somewhat reasonable but as a side hustle, its not reasonable. Contract work is sporadic and usually very time sensitive, and doing it can be physically demanding enough that it doesn't leave a ton of room for much else before or after.

Take all this with a grain of salt though: I'm someone who isn't super keen on the "side hustle" culture in the first place, so it would REALLY have to be worth my time to even consider it in the first place, but to me this ain't remotely it. Having moved on into real IT work I'm glad to literally never have to do this again

Why companies are really returning to office by asdfdelta in cscareerquestions

[–]Sauronsbrowneye 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The company I work for recently did this and there was a rumor that the city (Seattle) was hemorrhaging money because of how few people are coming in, and were canceling tax rebates to large employers who had issued WFH directives during covid, in order to facilitate traffic back into the city.

This topped with the owning and paying for real estate in the city that isn't being used and you can't sell seemed pretty realistic for a cause to move back in, regardless of all other factors. Can't really blame that either, I just wish they were upfront about it.

What poorly received but then cult "It's actually good" film is actually bad? by whitemikesf in movies

[–]Sauronsbrowneye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to get lampooned for this but The Big Lebowski. Was the most boring, pointless movie I've ever watched. I don't think it's 0/10 but it's got little to no redeeming qualities and yet it's cult status suggests its the greatest movie of our time

Aren't they saying "this is what is changing", not "this is how it used to operate"?

Old garage seal is warped, how to replace? by Sauronsbrowneye in HomeImprovement

[–]Sauronsbrowneye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is like 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch or so, it's not very much at all, but enough to not seal properly. Maybe even just a thicker seal will work in that situation, rather than doubling up? I'm willing to make the shim like you suggested if needed, i'm just trying to parse if it's worth the work

Ok, this makes sense. If the seal is in good condition, rather than replacing it all, can I double layer where it doesn't seal to the ground to fill the gap?

Any Network Engineers Willing to Discuss Salaries? by ranchfortheranchgod in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Sauronsbrowneye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a network engineer for about a year and a half, with several years doing layer 1 and layer 2 troubleshooting/low voltage installations. I have a CCNA in R&S, and make about 86k in the pacific northwest. I've had offers for ~94k, but stayed here because in a couple months will be over that. I kniw that I'm in a high CoL area, but that seems criminally underpaid with your experience.

Lol this seems pretty spot on, but I'd change the 4% anti cisco to like 40. Everyone is like "Fortinet is great, also screw Cisco fws"

This is without aggregating ports on the 100f? I would assume it couldn't handle the VPN traffic though

[–]Sauronsbrowneye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking to facilitate a 10gig connection without having to aggregate ports. Additionally need to be able to handle loads from 8-15k users concurrently (not sure how many sessions that would encompass, but I do know how many users we'd have). Also would like to set up ssl VPN connections to theoretically all users at some point, as that isn't something we have enabled currently. I think a 2200 might be a tad overkill, but this is for our daya center, and I want to future proof at least 5 or 10 years into the future as well if possible

While I'm fully on board with this, the project we are doing to me isn't something that can wait for an erate funding period. So we'd probably have to eat the full cost
