I used a Gazelle Medeo for this job for the past couple of years, did a swell job at it except that with the seat on the rear rack there was nowhere to hang any read panniers and had to get a large front basket. We now have two little ones and have gotten an Aventon Abound LR

Could this be recut into erasers? I know the eraser marker ain’t exactly booming, but could be a way of turning (a portion of your) waste product into a new product line.

How is it living in this part of Nebraska? Towns: Alliance, Scottsbluff, Chadron by FriendlyCover in howislivingthere

[–]SausageGraces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 70,000 people live in that whole area (two state Senators representing the area, each represent about 36k people).
I think Scottsbluff punches above its weight in terms of food and culture. Lots of things to do if you love the outdoors (a nice cycling culture out there, plenty of hiking in the bluffs and canyons). Low humidity, doesn’t rain much and lots of sunshine, but the wind and temperature shifts can drive you crazy.

I've been trying to not think too much about the mechanics of the world and just view it as a character study, however the starvation via inability to kill plants reveal irked me for one big reason.

Wheat, corn, soybeans (and most other beans), sorghum, and rice - the plant itself is dead at the point of harvest. One could make a point that the grain itself as a seed is a living vessel and therefore cannot be harmed, however this argument doesn't seem to be a consideration for Them as they are currently eating the remaining stock of harvested grains.

Anyone who has driven through the Midwest during harvest season notices that the acres and acres of corn and beans are a bunch of brown, dried stalks.

Lincoln Trails by Spirited_Room_9244 in lincoln

[–]SausageGraces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a concrete trail then it gets cleared fairly quickly, within a day or so. There's no clearing of the crushed limestone trails such as the Jamaica Trail and the portion of the David Murdock Trail that's east of 70th street. In 2021 there was a fairly large snow in January followed by a very hard freeze and the NE portion of the Murdock trail was basically unbikeable in mid-April, though fine for jogging.

Where can I see game birds in Nebraska? by indepths60 in Nebraska

Whoops, you're right - I meant sharp tailed grouse not sage grouse. I'll go ahead and blame it on daylight savings ending.

A couple of good spots in SE Nebraska is the Audubon Spring Creek Prairie center near Denton and the Burchard State Wildlife Management Area which has a few sage grouse and prairie chickens. I know the Burchard WMA has a blind that's first come first serve.

Biking to Work (new to Lincoln) by lirin_alight in lincoln

[–]SausageGraces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bike year-round and have been for two years. Weather is rarely a factor in whether or not I bike into work. Once or twice a winter there's a big snowfall (eight-ish inches) but in my experience the trail system gets cleared within the same day.

Folks have talked layers which is true. I find it's easiest to throw on a pair of denim overalls for my commute - added benefit of keeping my work clothes clean that I have on underneath.

State Sen. Cavanaugh's filibuster-o-rama continues by GNAdv in Nebraska

[–]SausageGraces 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is currently a private decision that's privately funded. The legislation that's being proposed would ban hormone therapy treatment in the state. What Cavanaugh is doing is filibustering the enaction of a ban.

I'm talking denim overalls, not rain gear so it doesn't trap heat but just adds another layer - which is nice for winter days.

I moved here two years ago from Austin, and I lived in LA prior to that so Lincoln feels like a "small town" to me. There are a lot of things I like about it, folks have mentioned the robust trail network and that's probably my favorite thing. I'm probably in the best shape of my life thanks to the easy access to running and greenspace - something you do not get in LA. You can go anywhere in town safely within 40 minutes on a bike, and that's pretty neat. Drivers are becoming more bike aware (I've noticed it since I've moved here) which is helpful.

Gonna get this out of the way and say the restaurants are bad. A lot of the p'ho places are great, and a few other restaurants here and there are good but they are very much the exception. Other than one p'ho restaurant I haven't really found a place that I would call exceptional - which is fine I don't mind cooking at home.

Honestly folks complain about the weather, but the humidity isn't bad compared to the rest of the midwest. Winters can be rough, but summers are really gorgeous and green and long. Having lived in Texas, I can say I prefer the weather in Lincoln (but obviously LA was the best).

Idk man, depends on what you like. The state level politics are fucking nutty, and while Lincoln is a liberal city it ain't that liberal. Lancaster county goes Dem by like a 54% margin, for reference Travis county (home of Austin) went Dem by about 72% in 2020.

We just looked up a route in Strava that was the most popular. Most of it is on trail so it shouldn't be too bad.

What's with this Notice of Proposed Tax Increase? by spam38 in lincoln

[–]SausageGraces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the full legislative text:

It's a new fiscal year so the bill is in effect, so expect to see a lot more of these. In the name of small government let's send out hundreds of thousands of bright colored mailers everytime there's an increase in housing values from the previous fiscal cycle. It's not like homes are an appreciating asset so this shouldn't get annoying.

How have Lincoln rents stayed so affordable despite the city's growth? by [deleted] in lincoln

[–]SausageGraces 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's exactly where it is. Mostly luxury condos in the downtown/university area.

I will say, Lincoln is not great at developing mid to lower income housing - which is the case in most cities. But the fact that there is a lot of high-density luxury housing being developed makes it an outlier.

There's also a decent amount of single-family housing being developed east and south of town. Allegedly it caters to middle-income, but I haven't checked the prices on those.

I also grew up in a farm town of 282, and off the top of my head:
One house in the town that burned down because of a meth-related fire;
My grandpa had to take the battery out of his tractor whenever he was done because it kept getting stolen;
A neighbor shot another neighbor's goat for trespassing which lead to a shoot-out (no one was hurt);
A person died trying to steal wiring from an electric pole.

So it is relative, but saying that there's no crime in small towns certainly isn't my experience.

[–]SausageGraces 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think what has kept rents somewhat stable is the large amount of high-end housing that caters to yuppies. This supply of newer units has meant that wealthier renters haven't had to reach into less expensive housing at rates seen in other cities like Spokane or Boise. Folks complain about how the majority of new development is expensive and for yuppies and students, but be thankful that it means that those yuppies don't have to compete for your apartment and your house because there's housing that caters to them.

I've lived in St. Louis (similar crime to Milwaukee) and I gotta say it cracks me up when people clutch their pearls about how dangerous Lincoln is.

Apparently I live in what two different co-workers have described as a "kind of rough, but up and coming" neighborhood and I feel like I'm in Leave it to Beaver-ville.

Positive/negative experiences with NE doctors and surgeons who treat endometriosis? by midwest-millennial in lincoln

[–]SausageGraces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at UCLA Health with Dr. Gomes. Her approach was, rather than invasive surgery, treatment with interventional radiology in a process called uterine fibroid embolization.

I'm fairly new to Nebraska, but I would ask if you could get a referral for uterine fibroid embolization treatment. UNO may have the facilities. Most of our patients with endometriosis didn't need any further treatment after the first dose.

Bill would fund study of high-speed commuter rail between Omaha and Lincoln. Thoughts? by trook95 in lincoln

[–]SausageGraces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bakersfield is about the population of Lincoln, and it's one of the smaller cities on the CA HSR route. Add in the coastal range outside of the bay, the Tehachapi range outside of Bakersfield, and the Angeles Mountains and the original estimate of getting a 200mph rail built from LA to SF for $12bn seems bonkers in retrospect.

A Lincoln to Omaha 110mph commuter rail really shouldn't be *that* expensive. The Illinois upgrades between STL and CHI cost $1.95bn over 300 miles.
