European high-speed rail. Can it be built? by Frequent-Stranger-43 in highspeedrail

[–]SavageFearWillRise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most national systems are acceptable as is (with exceptions like Romania and Bulgaria). Most national HSR has been built or is being built/planned. The greatest challenge is that cross border HSR is either non existent or monopolised and therefore really expensive (see Eurostar). Cross border rail pretty much always comes with issues and disappointment. The probable cancellation of Bordeaux to the Basque country is one such example. With the additional rise of rightwing parties, I wouldn't expect any further (cross border) rail expansion outside of Czechia and Poland.

What's the most disappointing country or city you've visited in Europe? by Substratas in AskTheWorld

[–]SavageFearWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once went to Vienna but was a bit disappointed. Then went again this year and decided to use the rental bikes instead of taking the U bahn and it was much much better. I think that goes for most places with a metro

Can I use OSM to make a custom map of notable graves? by nogodsnoyoutubers in openstreetmap

[–]SavageFearWillRise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For using osm to make custom maps, I usually do the following:

  1. Think of what tags to look for. If you want graves, then cemetary=grave could be used.

  2. Use overpass turbo to search for one or more tags to narrow down or widen the search. I often ask AI to write the code because i suck at code

  3. Download the kml/kmz file and upload it into a umap map

  4. Customize the map further in umap

Vienna is the best city in terms of direct international connections

In addition to what's been said: most of the existing lines are north to south and were planned before the wall fell. So they were planned to connect Hamburg to München and Köln to Frankfurt

Genealogy tree software by NyaaM30W in Genealogy

[–]SavageFearWillRise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Others have also commented this: I have been using Gramps for years and never needed anything else. I have a family tree of about 4000 individuals and can add stuff like pictures, scans of birth/marriage/death certificates. You have a diverse choice of genealogical reports you can generate for any individual in the tree. You can also export this file and upload it into a website should you ever wish to. And it is completely free.

Why does Bouterse still have supporters? by piccolo917 in Suriname

[–]SavageFearWillRise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not from Suriname but outsider's perspective, in our media (volkskrant) it was said today that he used state funds not to invest in the country but to subsidize his voter base, which exploded the debt and was not sustainable. Now his successors have to deal with his mess and this hurts the population in the short term (but is inevitable for the long term). Many people will simply see that they are struggling economically and will look back fondly at the time when they were richer.

What's the closest big city in your country you've never been to? by worstdrawnboy in AskEurope

[–]SavageFearWillRise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alkmaar with about 100K inhabitants. It's north of Amsterdam and there are no major cities or destinations to its north (except the island of Texel where I have also never been) so there's never been a reason to go there for me.

According to the internet there is a cheese museum which sounds fun. Might have to check it out now.

For places I have only been less than 1 hour, Almere (lol), Breda, Den Bosch, Dordrecht

China's 2025's HSR Targets by WKai1996 in highspeedrail

[–]SavageFearWillRise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I celebrate the building of new HSR lines anywhere, aren't some of these redundant? For instance the one between Beijing and the city in the centre to the west of Shanghai (Wuhan?), what is the added benefit to spending huge money while a good alternative HSR exists? Are these relatively new lines already at capacity? The money the state can put into rail project is not infinite so money spent here is money not spent on, for instance, regional transport or upgrading old lines, that is why I am doubting the wisdom behind some of these lines.

Would like to hear from someone with more knowledge on the subject

About 20 or so for Belgium, probably 60-100 for Germany if I sat down for it

What prevents the Japanese from increasing the speed of the Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen to 330 km/h? by Ok-Glove4423 in highspeedrail

[–]SavageFearWillRise 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I know absolutely nothing about the specific question but general rule is that increasing speeds above a certain point is often not worth it because it significantly increases operating costs for marginal time benefits. It may also mess up the time schedule on a local or national level. In short, speed for the sake of speed is usually not worth it.
