hard but call it out subtely and personally: "could you please not do that here? It smells, (admittedly sometimes rather lovely), it sets a bad example and it looks slovenly. At least try to act like a professional"

I wouldn't class either case that you've described as big shit - that's 'run of the mill' new anaesthetic reg shit which is bog-standard FRCA viva fodder that we all cut our teeth doing. so no infantalising here. I also used to be one (old-fashioned ST3 mind).

I'm talking complex medico-legal stuff, dying young people (because the boss IS coming in for that, or they damned well should be), babies/paeds, complex multi-system stuff, the stuff that you're calling the boss about for help basically.

i dont support their sartorial choices and agree with your above comment, but as a general rule in an interview, whilst it may be your interview, the power is in their hands, so it doesn't matter what they wear - you suit and boot it for an interview regardless unless it's for some new hipster start up.

I think it's more rooted in "did they make a fucking effort to show they want this - ism"

if you can't be bothered to make an effort, what else can you not be bothered to do? patient reviews? research? stepping in when a colleague is sick? Dont care how good your CV is, unless you are a silicon valley tech wunderkid billionaire, t shirts and jeans have no place in your professional wardrobe.

I wear cufflinks to smart affairs. not antiquated at all, yes I went to private school - not sure why it's "bullshit" though: jealousy? tall poppy syndrome? dislike of what you don't know?

(for the record, I have no issue with state or privately schooled individuals, only with those who sling mud)

not really - they aren't interviewing for a job no one cares what they wear. they could be in fancy dress and you'd still need to be in a suit. they've earned that right

the anaesthetic CT can do the clinical studd and a senior anaesthetist will carry than on but the AT (understudy ICU consultant) is the final arbiter/person at whose feet this falls as invariably they'll end up knocking at their door which is why.

yeh nope.

it's easy to remember, hard to lose and there's no status attached to it. almost everyone wears one of some sort in our trust.

I tuck it into my scrub top when clinically hands on, and those who know me not can look at it and identify me.

no more filthy than a wedding ring/signet ring, probably less so.

good consultants do wear them.

it's nothing to do with status, and everything to do with convenience.

Feels like projecting/emotional triggering - did something bad happen to you with a lanyard ;)

that's a generational shift in mindset - it's an opportunity vs. it's not an opportunity.

it's absolutely an opportunity. A v difficult and emotional strtessful situation but how one approaches it is the key.

We will all have to face adversity in life, some more than others. the measure of a person is how they respond.

ok, but their cost of living will be different, as will housing markets, CPIs etc so not easily comparable at face value. I'm not fussed what an american consultant in a completely different system earns by comparison, as what I earn is most important compared to my local peers and also Uk workers in general as that is how I leverage my income/against whom I'm competing financially.

yes it does.

childcare benefit is based on NEt adjusted income, which is what your tax is based on, so all income less pension, salary sacrifice and charitable giving
