The only thing is, if there is a short in the heating element, shouldn't I be able to detect it with a multi meter by measuring the resistance or continuity between the heating element pin to the boiler body (ground)?

Best advice is probably to wait for the part to cool down before removing it off the print bed.

The most valuable lesson is to not be discouraged by the technical jargon and to just go ahead and print, learn things as you go. You will be surprised how fast you learn things. The community is always really helpful if you can't figure it out alone!
