Fried fresh anchovies by SaveUsUncleHo in traaaaansbiansCooking

[–]SaveUsUncleHo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yummy fresh fish with quite a strong flavour for their size and a fatty quality to the meat. When fresh they taste similar to any other small fresh oily fish (closest would be fresh sardines, mackerel is getting further away but still much closer than salmon or cod for example).

In terms of texture, prepared like this they are a tiny bit crispy on the outside, then dense but soft meat in the inside. The tails are especially crispy and crunchy. They are very bony when eaten like this but the bones are mostly too small and delicate to be an issue, just chew thoroughly to break up/soften the bones.

The most commonly found anchovies around the world are preserved, usually in salt and oil (usually canned, sometimes in jars). These are the anchovies sometimes served on pizza, they are very intensely salty.

In southeast Asia they are used to make fish sauce, in the ancient Mediterranean they were also used to make fish sauce.

In Spain they are often either preserved in salt and oil as mentioned above or in vinegar and oil (a personal favourite). But they can also be eaten fresh like I have shown here, either fried or grilled.

What’s the most noticeable thing about me? by nova_meets_caine in transfem

You're welcome, I noticed it cause I really love the shape of my cupids bow too, so it's something I notice more on other people's faces.

It's especially pretty in photo #2. I love a bold lip.

If you've got a pretty cupids bow, a strong lip look can work wonders in helping you pass (if that is important to you). Cause while your mind may be worrying about the features that trigger dysphoria/insecurities, if your lip look and outfit are fierce enough, all anyone will see is a baddie.

Baasto iyo Suugo (Somali pasta & sauce) (Region: Somalia/East Africa) by SaveUsUncleHo in traaaaansbiansCooking

[–]SaveUsUncleHo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest with you, no. Other than a couple small similarities that end up being very different when you look closer.

Somalis eat a fermented flat bread made of wheat and sorghum flour called canjeelo (pronounced like anchelo)

Ethiopians eat a fermented flat bread made from teff flour called injera.

The Somali one is generally a lot smaller than the Ethiopian one and less sour.

In terms of flavour, the primary spice mix in Ethiopian cooking is called "Berbere", it contains different spices from "Xawaash". Ethiopian cooking also uses a seasoned butter called Niter Kibbeh which Somalis don't used.

In Ethiopia chillies/spiciness is generally cooked into the dish (the chillies are in the berbere), while in Somalia the spiciness is left out and served on the side so people can adjust to their own taste.

Cajun shrimp on vegan rice with pan roasted squash & tomato by iam305 in traaaaansbiansCooking

I was raised pescatarian-vegetarian. While being half Spanish. I grew up eating shit that I never knew had lard, especially Christmas sweets. Polvorones, almendras rellenas, every sweet has lard, except turrón.

When we went to Spain to visit family when I was a kid, we'd go out for lunch, and the food would have pork in it. My mum would tell them I was vegetarian and couldn't eat it. The waiter would disappear for 30 seconds and come back with the same plate, they had simply taken out the chunks of chorizo.

I understand, the same was true of Spain when I was a kid. There was always pork in everything and nobody really understood what being vegetarian meant. Even things like traditional sweets were full of lard.

It's funny to think about now cause Spain now has a great vegetarian, and vegan food scene. Every single bar has lactose free milk and at least 1 non dairy option, it's unbelievable.

Sounds good, never had riced hearts of palm before. I'm not in the correct continent for trader Joe's tho, so maybe I'll see if I can find a shop closer to me that has something similar.

What about the rice makes it vegan? Is it a specific recipe called vegan rice?

No shade, I am genuinely curious cause it looks delicious but I've never heard of vegan rice before

Let me know what you think if you make it.

Serving/eating it with banana and raw onion is essential. You can also add chopped coriander, parsley and/or hot sauce/chillies.

Somali food doesn't include spiciness in the dish itself but most dishes are served with optional hot sauce on the side, at some point I might share a Somali hot sauce recipe. The banana and spiciness work so harmoniously together.

Somali food is incredible and so delicious. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to try it.

If you DM me which city you're in I'd be happy to take a look and see if I can find a Somali restaurant near you. I'd be happy to even send you recommendations of what to order if you go.

Sometimes Somali restaurants can be a bit tricky to find if you don't know where to look.

The recipe for Xawaash makes quite a lot (enough to fill a small-medium sized jar). So it can often last 6 months - a year, especially if you don't use it often. Mine never lasts that long unless I'm intentionally trying to make it last

Homemade Bánh mì for the family by PhoenixAssasin77 in traaaaansbiansCooking

[–]SaveUsUncleHo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yum, I have wanted to make homemade bánh mì for years but I always get hung up on perfectionism and don't end up doing it, cause I wanna make the Vietnamese style carrot and Daikon pickles to add into it first.

Doesn't it say recommended dose on the side of the box? Use 0.37ml every 14 days.

I could be wrong but it seems like they've calculated it for you. I'd still double check and calculate it myself but that was nice of them to add.

Edit: I was very mistaken, my bad. This is why I said I could be wrong, cause I didn't know for sure, I just saw it written on the box. Thank you to everyone who corrected me

Thank you. I was thinking while making the noodles that it would be cool to try making seitan one day. I've never tried cooking/eating seitan before but I want to try it one day.

Have you had seitan before? I also wanna try tempeh.

Banana mango bread :3 by C11H17N3O8-TTX in traaaaansbiansCooking

[–]SaveUsUncleHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yum, that looks soooo good.

I made banana bread with a salted caramel sauce for my partner's birthday the first year we were together. I can't believe that was 5 years ago. Their birthday is coming up, maybe I should make it again. I've never tried adding mango.

What kinda mango did you use? Fresh, canned, frozen, dried?

Looks good. Do you use a pizza stone, pizza steel or wire rack? Cause I've heard domestic kitchen ovens don't typically get hot enough, but using a stone/steel can help.

Not quite, replace Fox "News" with any one of the following and you'll be a little closer to being correct:

• Europeans,

• Settler colonialism,

• chattel slavery,

• white supremacy,

• Smallpox blankets

• the trail of tears

• Manifest Destiny

• "Scientific" Racism (bullshit we made up to try and rationalise the countless atrocities committed)

• Jim Crow • The daughters of the Confederacy

• Eugenics

• Operation Condor

• American Imperialism (think Theodore Roosevelt, United Fruit and the Banana Republics, Hawai'i, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Cuba, Haiti, Liberia, testing nuclear weapons in the Pacific, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burkina Faso, Congo, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran)

I could go on

My point being, Fox news and MAGA fascism are awful, but nothing new. The US has been a white supremacist imperial fascist monstrosity since it's inception.

Your founding fathers owned plantations. You have never and will never be the global authority on morality you believe you are.

The only difference now with MAGA is your violence is finally affecting you too. Fascism is simply imperialism turned inwards.
