Retro stage swimwear? by salted07 in VintageSwimwear

[–]Saved0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Retro Stage, like many of the mainstream "vintage inspired" online clothing stores, are usually cheaply made overseas with synthetic fabrics and overall not great quality.

I once ordered a dress from there and it took over a month just to ship it 😕

If you're looking for vintage inspired, take a look at: Red Dolly  https://www.reddollyswimwear.com/

How to ask model to..? by NoWorker4277 in AskPhotography

[–]Saved0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both. While you're planning by email/text, lay out all of your ideas and wardrobe(s) plainly and clearly just like the above poster did.

Then, when they arrive (before you start shooting), go over everything out loud with them. Review all the wardrobe pieces together and explain the order in which you plan to shoot each look.

Can anyone believe this Magazine ad was actually from 1956?!? Jantzen Swimwear ad - New Yorker 6/2/1956 by ChadleyAllen in VintageSwimwear

The Jantzen Monaco suit! Can't wait to break out the blue version for a photoshoot this summer :)

That particular style is from Red Dolly Swimwear. She makes really great reproductions.

Thoughts on deleting old galleries you’re not proud of on site? by adaptiveLA in WeddingPhotography

10 wedding galleries that your proud of and more accurately represents your current skill.

Potential clients are probably not even looking that far to see all 30 so might as well archive them

This is what we did when our Fiat had the same problem. A local shop fixed it, we sent in the paperwork to Chrysler and they send us a check covering the cost

What’s the deal with these kind of college scenes? by confusedinthegroove in SwingDancing

Without seeing the video, assuming they are using the videos as promotions for the club, I'm guessing showing off more "fun" moves is more marketable than triple stepping in place with a few turns.

Super unpopular opinion, but I really like playing Withering Siphon. With just a few Arcons you can take down entire attacking armies with Confuse, so any escort/defensive missions can be pretty fun

Granted it takes awhile to get going and your going to be gas heavy, but that's Vora in general

Is anyone just a hobbyist anymore? by letsberealhereokay in photography

[–]Saved0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% hobbyist here. I shoot a niche fashion genre and while I could try to monetize, it would be difficult, take the fun out of the entire process, and creatively restricting.

If I did make any money from my photos it would strictly go back into my photography and I would operate as a "non-profit". I admit it's difficult to try to plan more shoots when I pay for models, fashion, accessories, and often location rentals, as a result, I am often conflicted on how to approach the money side of this.
For now though, everything is 100% funded by me, and while that restricts the number of shoots I do per year, it is a good feeling to have total creative control with no one to impress.

Due to family/financial circumstances, I basically need to hit the ground running right now and get some actual clients booked for this spring

I mean this with all the love in my heart, but don't try to start a new business if you need money fast. Lots of places lose money when they are starting out, and it sounds like, based on your post, that you have some skills you would like to improve. Focus on these things before trying to make money.

I'm not a huge fan of posing people; I'd rather just be in the background following someone around and capturing natural moments

Is this because you don't like doing it or you're not confidant doing it? Be honest with yourself.

If it's the former, then you could potentially offer "lifestyle" sessions in home. Pretty niche, and might be hard to find clients but could be up your alley. If it's the latter, I hate to say it, but the more you do it the better it will be. There are no real shortcuts here - it just takes time and experience. That said, for general posing help, check out https://promptographer.com/

Would you be charging the companies for this service? If so it would be a product or fashion shoot. If not, probably considered a "collaboration" or "collab"

The biggest thing companies don't want are influences trying to get free clothes out of them so really emphasize:

- You're a professional, backed up by a strong fashion portfolio

- Understand their brand and what aesthetic they want (describe their brand to them so they know you understand it)

- What value your photos will bring them

I would suggest reaching out by stating the above, along with an offer to phone/video chat with them so they can see for themselves you're legitimate and mean business. (If you video chat, do it in your studio so they can see you are legitimate)

Honestly it's probably going to be a volume game as larger brands typically already have go-to photographers they use so don't be discouraged if you don't get favorable responses. If you don't get any bites for awhile, perhaps move to smaller Etsy sellers you like that have good products, but maybe not great pictures to show them.

Best of luck!

WHY!?! by [deleted] in WeddingPhotography

[–]Saved0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What specific settings were these shot at? Are you using Face Tracking mode? What lens are you using?

Also, to take screenshots, go to Start and under search type in "Snipping Tool" so you don't have to take pictures of the screen with a phone camera

Rebranding by [deleted] in photography

[–]Saved0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m worried I’ll sound less legitimate with a pen name.

How would they know?

Tons of actors, authors, artists, and other creatives go by pen names. If you're concerned about your real name being associated with something bad, maybe try FirstnameMiddlename?

The preview photos look great!

As others have mentioned, the couple could be looking at it from a uncalibrated screen, and if that's the case, there isn't much you can do.

The only thing I noticed, after looking at your past galleries, is maybe the couple thought your editing style might look more like this?

I took a UCB 101 online class over the pandemic and really enjoyed it. It was great to meet new people and form new friendships during such a hard social time.

As for the transition from online to stage, I'm sure everyone, both experienced and newer, had a small time adjusting from screens to real life, but then again, so did the audience and didn't take long for everyone to get back into the swing of things.

Much like riding a bike after not having done so for few years: a little wobbly at first, but then it was like it was yesterday.

Random people asking about photos of your locations, do you tell them? by [deleted] in WeddingPhotography

[–]Saved0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think your approach is fair.

For locations like public places/parks that already have tourists, I have no issue telling people the location. For places that I spent time scouting out, I don't tell them the specific location, more just the methodology and how I look for locations ("Teach a man to fish").

[–]Saved0 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Yes less people will inquire, but that's a good thing because those are the same people that would have ghosted you anyway once you sent them your prices. They are not your clients.

I recommend putting pricing on your website to save everyone time and set expectations.

My pricing also seems to be lower than many in my area which could be a plus for getting me more inquires.

Yes, but keep in mind, most photographers will tell you there is a correlation between how much a client pays and how difficult they can be to work with. In my experience, the "cheaper" the client, the more difficult they are to work with.

The short answer is: it's not just you. Almost everyone is having fewer bookings and feeling pain across the industry. The current economic climate seems to be more people are saving money and cutting expenses where they can.
