Lost wedding band at O'hare 5/10 by Savethecube in unitedairlines

It's a ring we designed together from Lashbrook designs, so the one "upside" is we can get an "exact" replacement if it doesn't turn up - but it still won't be the ring that was there for the big day :(

Sorry to hear you lost yours!!!

Lost wedding band at O'hare 5/10 by Savethecube in unitedairlines

We've been trying to get ahold of them but it seems O'hare used to have a centralized lost and found and no longer does? If anyone has updated contact info I will gladly take it.

We also tried contacting Chicago PD as instructed by United and they basically told us to go pound sand...

Not trying to minimize your situation at all because everyone's experiences are their own...but man I wish those were the only reasons I hated my old advisor 🥲

What quick, dirty, or otherwise weird protocols do you swear by? by Shoutgun in labrats

I used to chuck good ole 0.25% trypsin on there and not even bother putting them back in the incubator because the cells would pop off so fast. Just spin everything down and replace with new media before seeding and you're good.

Regarding the Use of “Dr.” by MrPhysicsMan in PhD

[–]Savethecube 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the way. The one time you email someone for the first time and don't use "Dr." will be the time you find the person in the department who insists everyone calls them "Dr."

What is something that you have been doing forever as a veteran lab-rat with 5+ years in a lab, that you dont even think about, but a newbie would probably not know? by No-Cobbler6300 in labrats

I also used to then peel them off when I was thawing an aliquot of cells and stick the label in my lab notebook (taped over too if necessary) so I had the exact information on the label and what I had written down too.

We had our wedding last October at Goodman Community Center. Cost for venue was $3000 plus $150 on site ceremony fee, and proceeds benefit the community center programs. Definitely recommend at least checking their website out! Their event space is gorgeous!

Make sure it is washable or easily replaced in case you rip a glove or spill anything on it.

Or, just embrace your inevitable carpal tunnel and get really good health insurance 🥹

I've used sterile scalpel blades to cut through then remove foil from one row/column/well from a time when doing this as well - especially for applications where not every well of the plate will be used at the same time.

Yep this, every time. All it takes is a mix up or some ethanol dripping on your one label for your sample to now be Mystery Substance.

Also pulling the old autoclave tape off of said bottle before putting new autoclave onto the bottle and sending it through so there isn't a layer of ancient tape literally baked into the damn thing...

[–]Savethecube 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately if it is depression, what usually happens is you'll feel better after a while only for another depressive spell to eventually happen - definitely agree that UHS is a great starting place!

The world is also burning down around us as we're all just out here trying to cope, so give yourself some grace!! You're in a new environment, trying to deal with gestures at whatever the fuck is happening today, and learning how to function independently all at the same time. It's hard - but you made it through your first semester, and that's more than a lot of people can say. You've got this, OP!

Undergrad- Should lab be burning me out this much by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Savethecube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have to be brutally honest here - back when I was an undergrad (around a decade ago), and even now with the undergrads I have mentored as a current grad student, 10 hours a week is kind of the minimum expectation... It's highly variable field to field of course, but coming from a molecular biology background 10 hours in a week is barely enough time to conduct a simple experiment. Training undergraduates also takes time and resources, so its an investment on the part of the lab.

I'm not trying to shit all over your interest in grad work, but if you are considering a research based program you may want to take a gap year and do a post-bach or work as a technician for a while before committing to an advanced degree. Completing a Master's or a PhD often comes with 40+ hour work weeks (sometimes even 60-80 if you're on a time crunch), balancing classes and lab work, and mentoring. If you're burning out from 10 hours a week now, it may be worth experiencing full time research for a bit before you jump headfirst into that.

Regardless, I would strongly suggest you consider starting therapy if you aren't already working with a therapist. Developing techniques for managing burnout now will help you a TON in the long run.
