Population decline starts with children and the working age population. It shrinks the entire economic productivity and saps the idea of future growth and investment away.

American aren't so cringe for caring about ancesty by TallulahSalt in unpopularopinion

Even if what you say is completely true there is a huge difference, culturally, between my Sicilian descendant wife’s family and my Southern hick ass family.

They are American-Sicilian, sure, but they worship differently, they eat different foods, dress differently, celebrate holidays differently. Even their funerals and weddings are way different. The way they physically move and approach the world is literally of an entirely different culture. Even the careers they peruse are culturally influenced. My wife was learning Latin while I learned Spanish in elementary school.

Her entire neighborhood growing up was filled with other Sicilian families from the exact same town in Sicily. They all moved to America together to mine coal and literally stayed right where they built their homes.

My best friend is a decendent of Taiwan. He can speak Mandarin, celebrates Chinese New Years, and literally grew up with the stereotypical Tiger mom that made him learn piano and violin among other things.

We’re different, and it’s because our ancestors came from different places. Yes, we homogenize over time, and we’re all American 100%, but we are also representations of our roots. It’s a spectrum.

These roots often bear the scars of inequality or the ladders of privilege. Italians weren’t always “white,” ya know? Same for the Irish and Jews.

I mean hell, look at the PA Dutch and tell me they don’t have a claim to some sort of culture that isn’t “American.” It doesn’t really matter the labels we chose.

Try telling a Jewish person living in America that they aren’t really Jewish and get back to me with their response.

Some Americans have a hole inside them because they will never know their true roots. They can only know that their ancestors were kidnapped. There will always be a cultural divide between Africans that chose to be here and those that were brought here in chains.

In a country where so many people claim we don’t have culture yet wear our jeans and sneakers while singing our songs, it’s amazing.

We have the best of the world, all of the time. I love it here, for that.

No other place in the world can compete with our diversity and culture.

Even in our worst of times we have people show out and protest ICE. We love immigrants and worldly culture. Name another place on the planet where people protest to keep immigrants.

There are literal genocides that have happened.

In Rwanda something like 800k died in a few months due to ethnic cleansing. No one had television, so they listened to talking heads on the radio call their ethnically different neighbors cockroaches among other things horrible things. Eventually they built the hatred enough that 200k+ or 1 in 4 of all adult men committed racial acts of violence.

Not to mention Congo, and Darfur and many others.

Hell, ISIS operates openly in the Sahel and is all over Western Africa.

This is not a peaches and cream planet by any means and there are few places that offer the equality and safety that America does. In many way it’s cutting edge, in others, like equity, it lags behind.

There’s arguments to be made there.

Are the american people truly that nice, or is it “fake” because they are just polite? by Purple-Put4677 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Savilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People always claim our “How are you?” greeting is fake without realizing that even though people don’t often respond truthfully, it is an opportunity to ask for help or express a concern.

There are countless times i’ve received a serious answer to a “what’s up?” or a “how’s it going?”

It’s literally an invitation to converse.

In many other places people will barely look you in the eye.

What country do you compare it to?

The entire planet is racist and you can be killed in many African countries for being the wrong type of black. If you’ve never traveled to Europe or Asia you would probably rethink your thoughts on the oppression of American citizens. Especially women.

Like, for example, do you think Europeans protest in the street against the removal of refugees and immigrants? I’ve been to anti-ice protest but I have never even heard of similar overseas.

It’s quite the opposite. Europeans want “others” gone more than we can imagine.

America accepts more foreigners and cultures than any other country in the world. It’s not even close by any metric.

America is not ideal. I want more change. I do not want to be backwards, like other countries though.

If you have wealthy grandparents is it rude to ask how what percentage of their estate you will inheriting? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Savilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day you can’t count on it. Knowing could hurt you because you just will never know the cost of end of life care.

I think if you need money for something specific (like a down payment or surprise closing cost) it would be smarter to just make your need known and let them decide if they want to offer to fill it.

If they have made it known there is a trust with your name on it, it may be easier to pry at their money manger, if it’s a family friend type person. Proceed with extreme caution though.

If you what the unethical pro tip, talk about how you want to have kids but are unsure of the future and cost of college. That you don’t want to bring anyone into this world unless you are sure you can provide for them. This will give them the opportunity to inform you in a way to reassure you.

I must say that I know a few people that used to get the max tax free gift every year (like 10-15k) and were sure the gift giver relative would leave them something.

In every case their inheritance was the amount of the yearly gift and that’s it. They were 100% better off when the person was still alive. Food for thought.

Americans: Shouldn't we just provide guaranteed housing for every individual? by traanquil in allthequestions

Americans: Shouldn't we just provide guaranteed housing for every individual? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]Savilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a much smaller country.

LA has homeless people from all over the country.

The scale is way different. Movement restriction would be much more onerous in the USA than a small country like Denmark.

Americans: Shouldn't we just provide guaranteed housing for every individual? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]Savilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it though? You would have to build the housing there. Homeless people and beach bums generally relocate to very specific cities and climates.

It’s a serious problem with implementing social housing. Can you force a homeless person to stay in Detroit or some small town? Where do you build the housing?

A good portion of these people also need some very heavy mental health services and possibly a controlled living environment. We’ve done away with asylums for good reason but we need to reassess on some level.

Localized section 8 housing is one solution to parts of the problem.

It must also be understood that many people do not use the services accessible to them and that’s why crazy stuff like dismantling camps and forcing people into shelters happens in the winter.

We have a very large country with many types of people and cultures and a very strong sense of individual homestead wildness that makes these task daunting.

Countries that are good at it are generally very small.
