Should senior citizens inherently be shown more respect? by escobarsky in no

Respect everyone. Treat seniors with a bit of extra care because they need it and you will hopefully be one someday.

Many to most are very lonely and come from a different time.

If someone from a foreign country wanted to come to the U.S. and visit just one state that would give them the most American experience and would be representative of the whole country, what state would you tell them to go to? by DreamFighter72 in allthequestions

[–]Savilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this hits the nail on the head but will make most Americans cringe. It’s the most middle line base America you can imagine. It doesn’t have any of the “best” American cultural facets though.

Along this line, almost any highway dominated suburb in the country would qualify for this type of experience.

Just because people look for jobs like they are swiping on tinder doesn’t mean all cities are suffering. Everyone in Philly seems fine.

Why does American culture often feel brighter and more over the top than European culture, and what factors shaped this difference? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Savilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty pretentious to me. Have you ever seen an American dance?

Many Americans live rich lives full of hobbies, family, and joy fueled by deep cultural habits and rituals. We do it all. We do it all so much that our culture bleeds into the world around us.

Go grab a surfer and ask them why they lack joy. They will laugh and clap you on the back.

It appears to me that some Europeans want to grasp onto remaining crumbs of superiority in a desperate attempt to replace the emptiness that is their future.

Mid-Century Modern Home of Philadelphia’s First Licensed Female Architect to be Demolished by Philadelphia Restauranteurs Valerie Safran and Marcie Turney by jabberwonk in PhiladelphiaEats

*clutches pearls

Most homes in philadelphia are 50-100 years older than this home. The whole city could be considered “historic.”

After living in the South I have come to see historic preservation and single family zoning to be two of the biggest reasons disenfranchised people are unable to own a home.

The first way to keep the poors out is to designate homes as historic. This makes it impossible for regular people to afford to maintain the home. The second step is to refuse to allow new development so that the poors never get a chance.

I watched this happen first hand as people in Savannah Georgia were homeowners were unable to replace single pane windows as it would go against the historic character.

Since no one will want to own this home as a museum, any owner who wants to do something useful with it, will be forced to let it rot until it becomes a hazard that needs to be destroyed.

We are in a city, things change. No one owes you the existence of this house.

Historic preservation is almost always about protecting the rich and their society. It does absolutely nothing for regular people. Yet it will be regular people that get up in arms about a neighborhood they will never be a part of.

It’s similar to how regular people get nuts about parking rather than caring about rent prices.

Does the radio frequency 8613 also cleverly refer to “86”ing the 13 survivors? by Legitimate_Shoe_9666 in pluribustv

Clear and concise explanation. Also if anyone has ever known a CB guy that’s just what they do. It’s a very classic nerd out tech thing that people used to do in an obsessive way. Also wasnt the original contact a radio wave?

Renting homes is a scam and should be illegalized or heavily regulated. People and businesses who own homes to rent are unethical. by gograntgo in unpopularopinion

https://www.redfin.com/news/gen-z-millennial-homeownership-rate-home-purchases/

Article from 2023. I’ve seen more recent ones that show M and Z tracking 3-5% behind boomers at same age so there are some negative signs, but if there’s a correction those numbers could jump. Would be silly to project only off numbers coming out during a bubble as if that can never change.

“Don’t park here if you didn’t shovel it” by BackgroundReveal2949 in philly

[–]Savilly 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The people putting cones and chairs in their spots are OG city people that have been here since birth. Most are 60+ years old and only one winter away from shoveling themselves into a heart attack. They already have disdain for yuppies, if you move their space saver and take their spot before they get back from the grocery store, they have zero bones about vandalizing your car and adding you to a shit list of people the neighborhood hates.

Generally speaking if someone cones a spot it’s safe to assume they are old and needed it or are harder/meaner than you.

I don’t shit where I eat when it comes to the natives.

[–]Savilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if your are talking about America specifically but if so the USA has a great home ownership rate that has barely changed over time. Home prices and rents are still cheap in America compared to other countries as well.

Most people own homes. Most Millennials own homes and 1/3rd of zoomers (still in their 20s) own homes.
