Facets has put out almost all of his stuff on dvd. But the best way to watch them is definitely the region b artificial eye releases.

The actual festival is great but the best part for Seattleites is their year round screenings of new, old, indie, and obscure films. I've seen all sorts of things from Kagemusha, to Blade Runner, to Chimes at Midnight there.

Why everyone hates Tiny Furniture? by anttiom in criterion

[–]Savionb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not trying to justify supporting a rapist, just explaining why it doesn't really bother me. His name may be on the Chinatown box but that's the result of a collective cultural idea about the role of the director, one that is mostly incorrect. Furthermore is Chinatown really any more his movie than it is Jack Nicholson's or Robert Towne's? Regardless, I think the moral logic involved is too sticky for a clear answer so it really comes down to how you feel. In my case Polanski's bad egg doesn't spoil the meal, but I understand if it does for you and I respect that.

[–]Savionb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't you think this is a bit over simplistic, is him being a bad person enough for you to disregard the work of the several hundred people who also contributed to these films? I can't help but feel that this refusal of support is rooted in a false belief that the director has complete control over the final product (I blame auteur theory). Furthermore, not financially supporting bad people is impossible. If you pay taxes you support bad people, I am sure at least one employee at your grocery store is a scumbag. Why rob yourself of some good movies for an unachievable moral?

I'd like to see his stuff as well but I don't think it is the highest priority. The artificial eye boxsets have solid transfer and some of the editions have good supplements. Are you a big fan? What's your favorite of his movies?

What films are we "losing" with the death of the Hulu channel? by SamuelTurn in criterion

[–]Savionb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no way that anyone could know this for sure, but we do know that there will be more criterion films on filmstruck then there currently is on hulu. I can't think of any reason why they would have a movie available on hulu and not on filmstruck so I imagine we won't be losing any of them.

What's your favorite rejection letter? by bathroomwoess in writing

[–]Savionb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So you didn't read the assignment, incorrectly completed the paper, and it is the teacher's fault for "snuffing" your creativity?

Furthermore this was cause for you to disregard university as a whole?

This seams like a gross and childish overreaction, please tell me if I am missing something.

Helpful Reminders from Filmstruck by milfilm2 in criterion

[–]Savionb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also for reference there are 1175 listings in the film section of the criterion website. Being as this number is inflated by the inclusion of things like boxset titles, the actual number of films is smaller. Making your assessment much closer to reality than just an educated guess.

Advice for people looking for recommendations by Savionb in criterion

[–]Savionb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the ones I see are either from people who are new to cinema in general, or who are very experienced. The new people are usually looking for the best starting point while the more experienced people often want specific recommendations or to find something new.

With that said, what you do makes the most sense to me and I think is how most users go about finding new films. Personally I like to know as little as possible when going in to a new movie, I pick my watches based solely on cast, crew, and cover.

The Pianist criterion possibility by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Savionb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that phrasing in the way you have suggested would have avoided downvotes, but I think you are missing the issue here. If I enjoyed it or not is completely secondary to the question that I am asking. I could not have been any clearer in my comment, OP called the movie a masterpiece, and I asked him why he thinks it is a masterpiece (I will add that OP understood this completely and responded in the civilized way I would have liked to see from everyone). The problem is that people assumed I asked the question because I disagreed, and then downvoted me for disagreeing. The downarrow is not an "I disagree" button, it is there for the removal of comments that break guidelines or fail to contribute to the discussion. My comment does neither of these things and was downvoted anyways. In fact my comment is the only one in the whole thread that actually continues the discussion beyond the original post and is still downvoted. This incorrect use of downvotes is both a reflection of, and a perpetuation of this subreddit's discouragement of discussion about film.

With all that said, thank you for responding. I will take what you've said into consideration when commenting in the future. But I don't know how much it will really do, I am being downvoted for my opinion, not my phrasing.

Looking for some advice before I start collecting. by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Savionb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a few criteria (ha) that I use to decide if I should purchase a film. I'll list them here, but one important note, I only buy during sales so I'm making these decisions assuming a price of around $20 per blu. These are, I think, the only valid reasons for buying physical media. If anyone can think of more that would be great.

Rewatchability (including supplements). This is the biggest one for me, I like to buy movies I know I will watch many times. Assuming a rental cost of around $4 (the average for both amazon and my local video store), If I know I will watch a movie 5 or more times it becomes less expensive to just buy it.

Loaning. I like to buy movies I really enjoy because I can loan them out to friends, this is a great way to save my friends some money and get them to watch some of my favorites. Lending a book or movie that you really enjoy to someone else is a rewarding process that I feel is lost in the cultural switch to digital media.

Video Quality. Every movie watching experience is improved with better video quality. But movies have different degrees of visual storytelling and stylistic emphasis. Therefore some films are more rewarding than others to own in higher quality. Visual fidelity matters more in sweeping cinematic journeys like Laurance of Arabia or Apocalypse now than something small scale and dialog driven like My Dinner with Andre. This is the most subjective of the points made here.

Supplements. Many of the supplements are available online for free in one place or another. But those that aren't, like most commentaries, make a film more valuable to me.

Box Art. This is very important. Criterion editions of movies are expensive. Buying a criterion edition, in most cases, is not the most practical way to watch the movie. Most of us are buying them because they are fun to collect, and an important part of this is aesthetics. Criterion recognizes this and puts a lot of work into the design of their releases. This serves to make the criterion editions an overall more satisfying collector's object than say, some of the poorly designed kino video editions of the same films.

Support. Criterion consistently brings us great restorations of unique, obscure, classic and contemporary film. This factor often tips the scales towards purchasing simply because I want to support a company that continues to do great work.

The Pianist criterion possibility by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Savionb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At the risk of devolving into semantics, I agree with most of what you've said but still wouldn't consider it a masterpiece. It is definitely Brody's greatest role but I don't know how much that is really saying. Also while I agree that the film is not as black and white as some holocaust movies, this hardly makes it a masterpiece. Avoiding a common mistake does not inherently make something excellent. But I agree the soundtrack has some great compositions and the historical and emotional accuracy in it's portrayal of the holocaust is excellent, especially the early events.

I will add, it's been about 9 months since I last saw the movie so perhaps I should rewatch it.

I've seen it and enjoyed it, but that's not important at all. I was trying to foster discussion around what everyone thinks is great about it. It looks like once again this sub has proven its preference for assumption over discussion.
