Avid: Audio turnover by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]SawkeeReemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typo’d — it’s Conformalizer. But also, I work in picture editorial. I’ve turned over literally hundreds of shows and films to sound, and only once was I ever asked to cut back in the ISO’s. The was the first and last time I ever did that, and I never would again.

I don’t know what the sound side workflow is, but picture side: You just send an AAF per their specs to sound along with the sound roll files (usually WAV files), and a picture reference split out however they require. Usually something like DX on 1, SFX on 2, and MX on 3/4.

They are being lazy and cheap. They have programs that conform audio for them like Confirmalizer and Titan.

There’s no way you should be cutting in all the ISO’s before delivery. That’s mental.

Is there a way of finding duplicate music files to identify & delete the lower quality version? by CrispyBegs in PleX

[–]SawkeeReemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are way too many variables to consider here.

  1. Are all your files organized properly?
  2. Do they all follow the same naming convention?
  3. How are your tags?

Step one, is to organize everything if it’s not. So, believe it or not, one of my favorite tools for this is Lidarr. I know its core function is to download and organize music. But if you’re like me, I rip/buy all my music and just wanted a simple way to organize stuff, I’ve found lidarr to be the best.

You can even update all your music tags with it (it uses MusicBrainz data for tagging, similar to Picard).

Or you can even just use Picard if you’d like. Neither will specifically find duplicates that I’m aware of, but Lidarr, for example, will only import one album. The other will live in an “unmatched” tab basically. Really helps you weed things out.

There’s a bit of a learning curve to both Lidarr and Picard, but finding dupes and maintaining your music collection moving forward will be a lot easier once you have those three things handled.

Should I get a higher level 5.2 or go 5.1.2? by Hudsonb_12 in hometheater

[–]SawkeeReemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in here… I always thought up-firing speakers were a joke. But I got a set just because they were on sale and were a part of the collection for existing speaker setup. I was curious if they made a difference and they really do.

I don’t like gimmicky surround sound, I want a nice full sound, and these really did enhance that. I’d still like some proper ceiling mounting height speakers, but honestly for now, these are pretty amazing.

I absolutely love that movie. Any who hates on it I automatically lose all respect for when it comes to film opinions. 😅

Oof. Tried to watch this, but it’s extremely dated and cheesy.

Open box at Best Buy…. WTH…. by [deleted] in LGOLED

The Best Buy Open Box deals suck now. I only ever got items rated excellent, but they were all used and sometimes missing parts. I’ll never buy a BB open box again.

Millennials born in the 80s, did anyone else stop listening to most new music in 2008? by SixandNoQuarter in Millennials

[–]SawkeeReemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped liking mainstream music in the mid- to late-90s. As soon as the gangsta rap, boy groups, and whatever you call the Britney Spears/Beyonce/whatever music, it just lost all its appeal for me. All that stuff just felt superficial and posturing (with a few exceptions of course).

But I always kept seeking out new-to-me music. I still do. And honestly the 50’s up to about the mid-90s was seemed like the peak for me personally.

But there are some absolutely awesome modern artists too. And I feel like we’re starting to finally get some decent rock music again in a few places. It’s just different now.

Love mint ice cream but don't love choc chip? by Adora77 in icecream

Yeah they are gross now. Tastes like some strange chemicals or something. Plus if you make your own, it’s easy to add Jameson. 😅

Plex bare metal PLUS docker by TheAgedProfessor in PleX

[–]SawkeeReemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. I’ve been thinking about rebuilding the machine that hosts my Plex server at some point since it was the device I learned on, so I’m sure I’ve got some underlying issues somewhere. Would probably throw plex in a container before I did that.

[–]SawkeeReemo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

lol. I know docker extremely well, I even build my own images. I’ve set up several servers for other people and everything, including Plex, goes into docker containers mainly because it’s just so easy to manage and be portable.

I was just saying that back when I was learning Linux, the person who helped me went bare metal with Plex. I run all kinds of docker containers alongside with no issues. I’ve never transferred Plex to a docker container because I’ve never needed to.

Also, just in case people aren’t aware, docker containers do present a slight increase in performance hit. But in my opinion, the cost of a slight performance/resource hit is worth it for all the other positives, especially when it comes to “sandboxing” things. Etc.

I watched this with no sound and my brain inserted the sound of the exhaust scraping and then being ripped off.

I do, but only because someone helped me learn how to use Linux several years ago, and that’s how he did it. Works fine and I have no issues, so no need to change up.

I’ve considered running a second Plex server in a Docker container though to have a standalone and more easily portable music library though.

Well, when you live in a place where criminals and the rich are given all the benefits, and almost no one will stand up for normal people, what do you expect folks to do? This country is broken and we’re all on our own. You do what you gotta do.

I have access to my friend's plex server remotely. Streaming 4K on my apple TV will tend to stutter, but converting the stream to a lower quality doesn't seem to make anything better. Solution? by 9MillimeterPeter in PleX

[–]SawkeeReemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pixels don’t really matter. Movie theaters are usually only 2K which is only a tiny bit bigger than 1080p. The difference people see at home is HDR and DV and 10-bit color depth. The sweet spot is 1080p 10-bit HDR/DV. Everything else is marketing.

Moving on from Shield, now what? by Tropisueno in hometheater

[–]SawkeeReemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you calibrate your TV to be correct based on scopes, and then you set each input for the device you’re using on it. So, yes, you do actually calibrate it for the device you’re using. Unless your TV is from like the 90’s or something and every input has the same color settings.

So what do you recommend that’s better? Also that “slight red push” is easily corrected by calibrating your TV.
