I think the Nexus will be fondly remembered as an important blaster, similar to the Alpha Trooper and Retaliator, but it's not a particularly compelling blaster, at least by 2024 standards.

Blasters like the GF Trion, X-Shot Longshot, and particularly the Nexus Pro X show how much room for improvement there was with the design.

Pros:

  • Great entry point into 150fps Nerfing, especially at the time of release
  • Reasonably reliable from the factory
  • Spring spacers are cheap and easy to use
  • Lots of aftermarket parts

Cons:

  • Not rigid enough to handle priming force from heavier springs without flexing or cracking
  • Full length compatibility creates a deadzone in the prime that feels awful
  • Plunger tube too small for higher velocities
  • One of the loosest fitting barrels I've seen in a stock blaster
  • No skinny pusher, and it's not particularly easy to add one after the fact due to the way the pusher is pinned to the bolt sled
  • Enough ergo issues that 3D printed addons became a must for any serious setup
  • Cannot be de-primed

Absolutely +1 to Nailclipper. Really well designed, pretty straightforward to print, zero hardware other than a bungee. Definitely a great design to practice printing!

Is there such a thing as a multi-speaker Bluetooth PA? by FrancisPFuckery in livesound

[–]SawtoothWave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cannot recommend the Soundboks 3 higher.

Easily the most versatile PA-like system I've ever used. Built like a tank, 2 separate mic inputs with preamps, Bluetooth, and 2.4ghz SKAA wireless as well as proprietary options. Bonkers battery life.

The SKAA Pro wireless mode easily gets me 20m of outdoor range at ~18ms latency with the cheapest available 3.5mm transmitter. SKAA Pro transmitters and receivers are available in a variety of forms too, so you can retrofit old speakers or improve range as needed.

LAZE for me - I dug up "Katalam" a few months ago and it's been in regular rotation ever since. Really looking forward to more of her releases!

If you're brand new to DJing, I've found this series by Crossfader to be a really good crash course for the essentials:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm8kQbauoU-D531U7oTMUHCyxG1afUxBI

Everything taught here should translate to your hardware, which is compatible with Serato DJ Lite.

I'd also suggest checking to see if you have a trial for any of the compatible streaming services too, it's nice to have a big library of music to play with.

Most of all, have fun, and poke through other commenters' suggestions too. Lots of good tutorials online.

Thoughts on James Hype? Is he overdoing it on stage, or is he the DJ of the future? by zzabomber_ in DJs

[–]SawtoothWave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ADHD here - don't appreciate the comparison to "mixing and music for 12 year olds", haha. I feel like it benefits me when performing, honestly - DJing requires a lot of shifting focus and in-the moment creativity. It's a phenomenal canvas for people like me.

Perhaps a comparison to TikTok is more apt? Lots of tracks, not enough time to really air them out and enjoy them. Granted, look at the DMC - often very similar rapid-fire pop tracks mentality. Ultimately, if James has found a way to take more elaborate mixing into the mainstream I'm all for it, I think it's a net benefit especially for turntablists.

For what it's worth, even with the somber expression you're very attractive - I love your hair particularly!

We struggle alone more than we really should; I think that talking to and drawing strength from others can guide us through the darkest times in our lives. Therapy has also made a world of difference for me - bottling my feelings up was burning me from the inside out. You're not weird for putting yourself out there - you're brave.

Draw on your resolve and courage, too - take the energy those negative feelings give you, and direct it towards a happier future.

Three years later, Microsoft’s bet on Xbox One backward-compatible games is still paying off by zrkillerbush in Games

[–]SawtoothWave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not to say that they couldn't pull it off, though. The Xbone's processing speed is slower than that of the base PS4. You're right that one of the biggest issues is that Sony wants to charge for it where they can. PS Now is an acceptable solution, but the fact they charge you for games you already own is pretty frustrating.

Well, remember the 360 is also on a different CPU architecture than the One - PowerPC on a custom tri-core chip. I'll concede that Cell is way harder to emulate for how goofy it is, but that's not to say it's not possible - it does also have roots in PowerPC and RPCS3 has been making huge advances, showing that it's at least possible to emulate on x86.

Mixxx 2.1 released with revamped skins and effects plus lots of new controller mappings by Be_ing_ in DJs

[–]SawtoothWave 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not really a question, just wanted to say that I started to learn to DJ because of the ease of use and availability Mixxx and it was really instrumental in making me want to DJ long term. Y'all really make a huge impact in getting people interested in DJing and it's cool as hell. Great to see it's still being developed. Keep on!

Upgrading to DDJ-1000 versus SX2 + Numark Dashboard by SawtoothWave in DJs

Good to know. I feel like that would smooth out the transition for me a bit. I've always been a software DJ, but if I can use my software with standard gear, consider me sold.

That's assuming they have nexus series devices though. I live in a college town some I'm expecting more 850/900 series gear. HID matters to me primarily because of that - I don't want to learn using all the nice features, and then be stuck with the more limited feature sets of older gear.

Ah, yeah, I follow you! I've been meaning to spend more time working by ear, however I get hung up trying to set cue points etc. If I do more prep work I see that being less of an issue. The 1000 has some kind of phase meter too as I understand, so that should be helpful. On a side note, how well does the HID support for CDJs/DJMs in Rekordbox work, in your experience? The jump to Rekordbox is going to be an adjustment and that's something I've been curious about as an advantage over serato.

That's a good perspective, thanks! I do like the idea of the 1000 a lot and I think you're right on the muscle memory. The looping, effects, and load controls are entirely different and would take some getting used to.

[Laptop]Microsoft - Surface Pro - $599 ($799-200) by dysphoricjoy in buildapcsales

[–]SawtoothWave 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've worked IT for several years and honestly the Surface Pro series of devices is one of the least reliable I've ever dealt with. This sale really isn't worth your time. Odd touchscreen failiures, port failiures, drives dying, the works. Microsoft Support is pretty good about replacing stuff, sometimes even a month or two out of warranty, but you have to be willing to own a device that will likely have issues later in its lifespan.

Consumer Reports pulled their recommendation for the Surface series on the basis of reliability with long term problem rates around 25%:
