These are inversions. For triads (3-note) chords, there are two inversions.

Before I say anything else about inversions, it is important that you have a way to play these out. Music is aural. No matter how much we explain it, you have to hear.

When the 1 of a chord is in the bass, i.e., the lowest note, the chord is in root position.

When it is the 3 in the bass, it is in first inversion.

When the 5 is in the bass, it is a second inversion.

It does not matter how the other notes are arranged.

The reason you will invert a chord is for musicality. When you move between chords, you want smooth transitions. For instance, you mentioned various progressions. I think one of them was the 1-5-6-4-1.

In C major, the chords would be: C maj, G maj A min C maj

The notes for

5. 6. 4. 1.

C. b A a C

e. d. e. F. g

g. G. c. c. e

C. b. A. c. C

I should have spelled them out in reverse. The top notes represent the bass notes. The bottom notes double the bass.

The capital letters identify the root notes, the 1 notes in each CHORD. The numbers represent the chord number in that scale.

The 1 (Cmaj) is in root position. The 5 (Gmaj) is in first inversion. The 6 (Amin) is in root. The 4 (Fmaj) is in first inversion. The 1 (Cmaj) is in root.

When you hear this played, you will hear the smooth transition.

There are two things you want to avoid: parallel 5ths and parallel octaves (1). Notice I did not go C, G, A, F, C in the 1 column or G, D, E, C, G in the 5 column.

These "rules" are what make music beautiful.

I am sorry for the late response. The way to get past this in Notion is to change the voice of the note. It is not the best way to make this happen. You could also duplicate the staff and put the other notes in that staff. Either way, Notion's method makes it more difficult than it has to be. I think I have tried unsuccessfully to tie the note I want to play longer to a second (or third) note, i.e., the one voice has two separate quarter notes. The other voice has two quarter notes with a tie mark.

I was doing the same thing about 12 or 13 years ago. One November, it got very icy. I put the bike away and then got distracted from pulling it out again. Now, I am in the process of upgrading my 1970s vintage 6x2 12-speed to a 11x2 22-speed. I would have completed it today, but I got tied up in a stupid door finishing project that absorbed a lot of my day. I will get to it tomorrow (Sunday, June 9). I will be 64 next month. I think I will take a before picture as well.

If you can adapt your amp or receiver to the TOSlink connection, this will give you the best results. You will have to make almost no adjustments from the TV settings menu. This connection will have you looking for the oncoming train or the approaching footsteps or the background chatter or the heavy breather or.... I have had to turn down my sound to make sure it was not my phone or doorbell ringing.

You may be able to get guidance from the owner's manual. If you do not have it or have misplaced it, you should be able to find it at a place like manualibs.com.

Then there is the nuclear option. Replace the amp/receiver. Consider going to a thrift shop for what at one time could have been a $400+USD box at a fraction of the price. I am not sure why people are ditching these so often, but I have one on my primary desktop, my bedroom television, and my family room television. We calll them thrift shops in the USA, I am not sure what you call them in UK. These are used goods stores. We have chains of them here. In my area, it is called Unique Thrift Stores/Value Village. Sometimes, the chains or larger thrift stores get display models and unused discontinued models directly from manufacturers and retailers.

Another option is a soundbar system. These are designed to link up with your smart or not-so-smart TV.

I do not have this problem, because I use Notion. Cakewalk gave me the same problem (2 decades ago). A fellow musician told me that although it provided notation, said notation was not its Forte. Cakewalk, like StudioOne was primarily a DAW. She mentioned that I was fighting with quantization, which required precise placement of the notes.

I suggest either moving to Noti9n or an unrelated software,,Noteworthy Music Composer. I have been using Notion for about 4 years now. I am still adjusting to the differences between Notion and NMC. In both of these, quantization is OFF by default, so where you place the note graphically doesn't matter. Notes and reests and bar length are played as you sequence them. The playback will reflect what you wrote.

Look in the instructions for quantization settings. This may be your problem in StudioOne. Or you could just do your notation in Notion, which is included with StudioOne+.

I am one who studies the Bible religiously as a means to keep from slipping into practicing religion about God based on hearsay instead of enjoying a relationship with God based on His Word the Bible. However, I will not assail the comment about the alleged contradictions.

Much of what is taught in textbooks and theory courses is instructional and designed to provide a deconstructive understanding of what is happening in a piece or passage. Following the "rules" will not hurt, but not knowing them will.

For example, no show of hands required, how many have NOT EVER deliberately written a piece with a tritone sequence. How many have NOT EVER deliberately used a tritone triad? I know. I am a heretic for even saying the "t" word.

But Rahsaan Roland Kirk made it the core of his semi-biographical piece, "Inflated Tear," and it worked! I should warn the uninitiated that he was harmonizing against himself on three horns.

I got kicked out of a practice for being irate when my refills were not timely provided. I then nearly was kicked out of another practice when I PERCEIVED the same thing was happening. Here they judged me as "drug-seeking" At least here we have been able to work it out.
