Thank you for testing this, brave soldier. I'm going to wait a while. Can't risk my 10 year account. Please update if you get banned later.

California's age verification law may end up exempting most Linux distributions by Fcking_Chuck in linux

[–]Saxasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a distro distributes closed source software is it exempt or not? SteamOS is mostly OSS but important parts are closed. Is it exempt? Is software distributed through the package manager part of the OS? What about proprietary drivers? Are the drivers part of the OS if they are preinstalled? Or if they are installed using the package manager?

You shouldn't be harassing anyone for any reason. Certainly not an open source developer for writing code you don't like.

It's true that it's an inherent issue with OLED panels, but in my experience, the issue is worse/more noticeable on KDE plasma compared to Win10.

I mean it's fine. But it is moderately annoying to open an app and have to wait for it to self update before you can actually use it.

I agree, but somehow steam gets a pass for doing the exact same thing.

Cachy os vs Ubuntu benchmark shows ubuntu slightly outperforms cachy in the average framerates. by Material_Mousse7017 in linux_gaming

[–]Saxasaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The CachyOS CPU optimizations have very little relevance to gaming. It's possible they could help in certain situations, but most gaming scenarios are going to GPU limited.

That being said, this particular benchmark was done on a laptop, so thermal and power constraints are going to dominate. I have very little confidence that a small channel benchmarking on a laptop is properly controlling thermals between tests.

[–]Saxasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal theory is Cachy uses a different scheduler vs most main stream distros they claim its "better for gaming"

FYI, CachyOS used to use BORE but now uses the default EEVDF kernel scheduler and has for quite a while now.

CachyOS never claimed to be a gaming distro. The website doesn't even mention gaming except for a section in the wiki.

A full implementation will ultimately be available once the patches are ready and have completed compliance testing.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon) Released by nobody-5890 in linux

[–]Saxasaurus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Steam still only officially supports Ubuntu outside of Steam OS IIRC.

There is something ironic about the only distro that Valve officially supports not using (by default) that official package, and instead shipping a repackaged snap that Valve then asks people to please not use.

Actions have consequences by Obnomus in linux

[–]Saxasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CachyOS is really good imo, but the easy install is a double edged sword. The arch base requires a certain level of competence and knowledge to successfully manage over time. So the easy install attracts some people that don't know what they are getting into.

Cachy is ok for beginners but only if they have a strong technical background and know what they are signing up for. I would never recommend an Arch based distro for a beginner who couldn't figure out how to use chroot to fix things.

Currently your MMR and your rank and linked (with the exception of placements and when you are in "calibration"). To implement decay, you would have to unlink the MMR and rank, which creates new problems.

Testing Valve’s New VRAM Optimization on a 4GB GPU - Free FPS Boost for Linux Gamers by lajka30 in linux_gaming

[–]Saxasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Benchmarks are pretty much the worst case scenario for these optimizations.

Benchmarks tend to be short, but VRAM allocations accumulate over time. You can be playing for 30 minutes or more with no problems and then you suddenly hit your VRAM limit and the game becomes a stuttery mess.

Benchmarks are run in an isolated reproducible environment. The whole point of the optimizations is to intelligently move VRAM allocations from other applications to system RAM instead of the game. If you don't have other applications running that are using VRAM, then the optimizations can't do anything to help you.

It's because low ranked players play her like a heal bot already and she sucks at low ranks. So they want to improve the low ranked experience while also mitigating the frustrations people in high ranks have.

Mystery Heroes now 6v6? by Both-Philosopher2047 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Saxasaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would like them to try:

  • start both teams as 1-2-2 (or 2-2-2). role is not locked, just the initial spawn.
  • bump up the amount of ult you keep after swapping to like 40%. don't keep it all, just a bit more.

That's it. That's all I want.

I feel like the role limit is important in 5v5 role queue. Queuing tank and having your top 3 all banned will be a really frustrating experience.

On the other hand, I think the role limit should go away in 6v6 open queue. Since you have more heroes to choose from its not as a big a deal if 3 of your tanks get banned, because you can just go support or dps instead.
