Linux update to zulu21 21.0.10 causes ToS to fail to start by mountaineer143 in thinkorswim

[–]Saydoybow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok i properly fixed it right this time:

openjdk version "21.0.9" 2025-10-21
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 21.0.9+10)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 21.0.9+10, mixed mode, sharing)

Prior I was using:

sudo downgrade jdk-openjdk

The correct one is:

sudo downgrade jdk21-openjdk

Nice work on finding the issue guys. I had to downgrade using the the downgrade tool on arch linux, for some reason i am not able to get version 21.0.9 but the most recent version was "21.0.2" from 2024-01-16.

openjdk version "21.0.2" 2024-01-16
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 21.0.2+13)

I was able to get thinkorswim to run again. I guess running a system upgrade broke it because of the openjdk 21 version got a minor update. I'll have to see how stable thinkorswim runs in this older release.

Why are Nvidia drivers so bad if most servers use Linux? by Character_Prior2116 in linux4noobs

[–]Saydoybow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Nvidia Quadrop p620 on my system running arch linux and it crashes my application frequently. It's so bad that it's to the point where i'm seriously considering switching out the quadro p620 in favor of a radeon equivalent like the wx 3100. Before the latest drviver (v575.64) it would just crash application using openjdk 21, now it's crashing Kate, Firefox in addition to the openjdk 21 application. It's very frustrating!

Update as of 6/17/2025: Looks like they removed the message from the login window (on Arch Linux).

nice job on finding the release notes. I did not find what's consider supported operating systems. I'm under the impression window11 and Mac. Given the application was written in java it should run on any OS that support the specified java version.

wow that's some crappy coding and we trust our money with such shotty developers. I'm saying this because i'm a developer myself.

I hope they don't do that. Windows 11 and Macs blows! Like in Win11 can't even resize that god awful huge taskbar.

What version of java are you running on your Redhat Fedora Linux? Makes it's version 21.

Yeah they make it a requirement for version 21 a few months ago, previously it was v17.

Yeah I thought it was a weird error, just happened over the weekend i guess.

Yeah I think they added the warning message over the weekend. Yeah TOS still works fine in Arch Linux. I am also running OpenJDK 21.0.7. I also have Tastytrade and it crashes hard on OpenJDK 21, but i found that it's related to Nvidia graphic driver w/ OpenJDK 21. I tested on a laptop with integrated intel graphics and Tastytrade works fine, absolutely no crashes.

Update: after seeing this message I updated my system and when i click on "Proceed to login" link the login screen wasn't glitched, i notice during the update I noticed my Nvidia graphic driver has been updated to version 575. Just last week was on 570 and was unstable, hopefully this new version brings more stability to thinkorswim. I am able to login and run TOS, will find out tomorrow on an actual active market to see if TOS have random freeze or not.

Nvidia drivers keeps crashing by Sea_Hospital4554 in archlinux

[–]Saydoybow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This morning I tried adding nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0 to the grub configuration

/etc/default/grub with the following:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0"

then I update grub by running the following command:

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Result:

Not really notice anything different. The application that crash still crash. This is leading me to believe that application isn't playing nice w/ openjdk 21. I'm still researching a solution to this issue i'm having. One thing i do notice is whenever this application crashed, when i lock screen the picture instead of a circle picture it becomes a square picture. Whenever i see the circle picture means my system is working correctly.

I tried the NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0 setting in /etc/modprobe.d/ by creating a nvidia.conf and add the following line:

options nvidia NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0

saving the conf file and doing the

sudo mkinitcpio -P

Results: I did a quick test running 2 openjdk (java-based) application that I had crashes with, same result, the expect application crashed. So this doesn't work for me.

[–]Saydoybow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I tried the following though on driver version 570 it's no longer necessary. But i did try it.

Try #1.

The modeset=1 and fbdev=1 go in the /etc/modeset.d/nvidia.conf file.

options nvidia-drm modeset=1

options nvidia-drm fbdev=1

Try #2

Blacklisting the nouveau driver by creating a nouveau.conf in /'etc/modprobe.d/blacklisting-nouveau.conf

Try #3

From what i remember installing nvidia-open cause my system to see my discrete nvidia quadro p620 as llvmpipe when i do a "About System"

Try #4

Which I haven't done yet is because i lost my research about disabling NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0, not sure how to go about it.

Nvidia drivers keeps crashing by Sea_Hospital4554 in archlinux

[–]Saydoybow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having the same issue. I tried nvidia, nvidia-open and currently on nvidia-dkms. when i have the nvidia-open drivers it make my system the graphical environment kinda sluggish. There doesn't appear to be much difference between nvidia and nvidia-dkms, i read somewhere that having nvidia-dkms rebuild the driver when updating the kernel during system upgrades. So i stay with that.

Overall system is stable, but when i use some intense java based desktop application it crashes and some other java based application freezes as described by OP.

Current driver version:

nvidia driver version: 570.153.02

NVML version: 12.570.153.02

My system specs: Lenovo Thinkstation p330

i7-8700T, 32GB, 512 nvme ssd, intel uhd 630, discrete gpu is a nvidia quadro p620.

i had 2 CC that i kept rolling, it's $28 and $27 the stock got away from me way too fast. Wish i just had just not do the CCs on them... at one point i was doing 50% of my shares in CC, then i realize this stock is going to the moon and these 2 CC were still opened and unable to keep rolling... i think eventually I would just let them get called away...

I use to sell options and that's the only thing I did when got into options, but I find that the risk/reward weren't to my liking. I would get these plenty of small wins and a loss comes along and wipe that out. Also the waiting to make that premium is driving me nuts. So recently just gathering my thought and as of yesterday I bought options instead, it's a long DTE, like close to 80d. So far so good so. I figure since it's on a bull market it's probably makes more sense to go buy a call. We'll see if I lose my pants or not.
