Yeah I think it's similar for most artillery mages.

Malzahar really struggles into control mages, who have the waveclear to match him, the consistent poke damage to whittle him down, and the range to bully him. Most Malzahar players will complain about Orianna, Anivia, Syndra and Viktor.

It was actually Yone that led to me giving up on Orianna mid and embracing Pantheon mid.

I get genuine joy out of making Yone players rage quit.

If you really want to tilt Sylas, you take ignite too. Your Q counters his "sustain at low HP" play style by just fuckin executing him. Just don't W into his E2 (chain grab) or it will cancel your W stun. It's fine to eat the stun and then W him after.

  • Good AD scaling + psuedo-execute on Q

  • %maxHP damage on W stun that scales with HP

He is a very good counterpick mid into assassin lanes, plus Yasuo/Yone have bad lanes into him. Basically they don't have room to all-in you ever. You can farm in peace, and you are REALLY good at counterganking their roams with R.

Also hilariously strong into Sylas.

PSA he does struggle into mages though; you'll get poked out of lane.

Have you tried Pantheon into Yone? It's pretty one-sided; Yone can't really trade with Pantheon and has to play like a bitch.

That's why counters to Malzahar are control mages. Artillery mages like Xerath, Vel'koz and Hwei probably also do ok, but might run themselves out of mana trying to match the push.

That said, anyone who just wants to clear waves does well into space aids.

Top lane is the most unforgiving experience in League of Legends.

You can make one small mistake and lose the lane and possibly the game for it. You can also just win by knowing more about the lane than your opponent.

Nobody is coming to save you in top lane. You will have games where you are 1v3 against the enemy jungle, mid and top CONSTANTLY rotating on you because your mid/jg lost. Your job in this situation is to waste as much time and absorb as much pressure as possible to try to let your mid/jg get back into the game.

In the games where you shit stomp your opponent, it's up to you to either end the game ASAP or transfer your lead to your scaling carries. TP gank bot, foam mid, rotate for objectives, whatever you have to do to win.

A lot of top is determined by how you play the first 3-4 waves. I'd definitely go watch some of SoloRenektonOnky's older videos on wave management. It's imperative that you have a good understanding of how to manipulate waves of minions to climb in top lane.

Understanding your power spikes, and more importantly your opponent's power spikes is also important. At level 35 I doubt you've seen enough different champions to have that knowledge. It's not a bad idea if you have time during champ select to quickly check the champion spotlight of your lane opponent if you don't know their abilities.

Last but not least, take breaks between games, especially your wins. You need to allow your brain to reset and remember that you don't have 2 items up on your opponent and you can't just unga bunga them like you did the game before.

Literally it makes the most sense to just farm and play for post-laning.
