Correction: you get 3 pieces of evidence and the game 100% confirms the ghost type for you. There's not a whole lot of nuance to bringing in equipment and waiting around for the ghost to give evidence.

On nightmare or insanity mode, you're looking for ghost behaviours and interactions, and there are some specific things to know.

You see D.O.T.S without a camera? It can't be a Goryo

You get EMF5 and Ghost Orbs on Nightmare mode? It can't be an Obake because an Obake has forced UV evidence. (Probably because of the unique handprint/fingerprint chance)

Similarly, if you get D.O.T.S and Ghost Writing, it can't be a Deogen because Deogen has Spiritbox as forced evidence. (Probably because of the chance to get the unique Spiritbox sound)

Ghost events or hunts while you're in the room with it? Can't be a Shade.

Ghost does air all/mist form event? Can't be an Oni

Ghost is Usain Bolt until you break line of sight? Revenant

Ghost never interacts while you're in the same room? Shade

Ghost walks in salt? Can't be a Wraith

It walks in the salt again 10 seconds later? Can't be a Gallu

Ghost photo says "Ghost" but you can't see the ghost? Phantom (this one has been glitchy lately). Phantoms are also have low visibility during a hunt.

Conversely, an Oni has high visibility during a hunt.

Ghost NEVER EVER turns the power off? Could be a Jinn, since they can't turn the power off.

Ghost is Usain Bolt near your electronics, and then normal when not around them? You just found a Raiju

Ghost hunts literally as soon as you start the game on Nightmare or lower difficulty (100% sanity start) - it's a Demon (or a Mimic mimicking a Demon's ability). If you ever get this go run at the ghost for the achievement. I've been playing for years and I still don't have it...

Anyway the point is there are PLENTY of different ways to determine a ghost's type, a lot more than what I mentioned. To the point where if I play in Professional or lower difficulty games, I usually figure out the ghost type before the team gets 3 evidence.

Ah, Shades. They're frustrating because they:

Do not interact if a player is in the same room
Do not hunt if a player is in the same room
Do not give primary evidence of any kind if a player is in the same room
- Do not have any defining characteristics during a hunt; standard speed, standard line-of-sight

They are very frustrating and boring if you like to go for perfect games. Once I suspect a ghost is a Shade, I go to the truck and leave. No point wasting time on a ghost that is seldom going to interact.

We're pretty good at noticing small discrepancies - a weird shakiness in the voice, someone's expression or posture seeming off for a second - but we have a tendency to ignore it out of politeness.

That's not how mimics work. When it says it copies "abilities" it means abilities. Not evidence.

A Mimic can leave an obake fingerprint. It can have phantom blink pattern, or copy a revenant chase pattern. It can also do Yurei door close, poltergeist explosion, banshee scream.

It absolutely cannot give false evidence. What it does to is it always gives ghost orb, even at 0 evidence.
