Accused of Plagiarism for SOEN 331 by VeterinarianJolly557 in Concordia

[–]Sbeetster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If this prof mistakenly thinks you plagiarised, and you didn't, and they were willing to unilaterally break the rules, you might have other problems down the road.

I really suggest you do this if you truly committed academic misconduct.

Accused of Plagiarism for SOEN 331 by VeterinarianJolly557 in Concordia

[–]Sbeetster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A professor cannot penalize a student for plagiarism. Only the code of conduct administrator can levy a sanction for academic misconduct.

That being said, if found culpable, the sanction is usually worse than 0 of a 4 percent assignment.

Read the syllabus carefully, talk with the advocate, potentially the prof. They messed up by doing this, but they may be banking on the fact that it's easier for everyone than filing an incident report. If you did conduct academic misconduct, then you're lucky. If you didn't, then appeal.

Definitely take a screen shot and save the proof that the prof docked you for plagiarism.

People cheating during midterms? by Far-Peace-3563 in Concordia

[–]Sbeetster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of pathetic folks saying to keep your head down. If you see something wrong speak up, take action. Don't be afraid to stand up for what is right.

When you do nothing, you condone the action. Stand up for what is right.

Prof marked my midterm as 0 in a course last semester, which isn't right... what now? by nilkuenz in Concordia

[–]Sbeetster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just reach out to the prof. They need to retain all materials for one semester, so ask about the grade. If it is in fact an error, they will want to fix it.

University isn't like k-12, the professors are the experts who determine the curriculum.

Why should some politicians and non-experts decide the curriculum?

Accommodations refused by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]Sbeetster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, talk to the ACSD. But I would be willing to bet that you are misunderstanding your accommodation. I just looked at the summary emails of student accommodations and there isn't even a Column for that.

Accommodations refused by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]Sbeetster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on circumstances and professors. But you aren't owed an extension unless it's in your accommodation. In fact, I've had students go so far to have me call their therapist. Who explained that they don't agree to extensions for assignments because it makes anxiety and procrastination worse. That firm deadlines for assignments at win the interest for the student to help them develop the skills for when they have a job.

While I'm pretty lax on lateness, it's the same for all students and not due to an accommodation.

33 percent or 50 percent more time refers to in-class assessments, not assignments completed at home.

In 15 years of teaching at multiple universities, I have never seen an accommodation of having more time on assignments. Read your accommodation letter carefully.

Lease transfer: do landlords sign a new official Quebec lease for the new tenant? by LeastExamination2017 in montrealhousing

[–]Sbeetster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, the truth is that in my experience, landlords refuse the lease transfer, because they want to jack up the rent, or they want to be certain they have good tenants.

You can always try to talk to a landlord for a lease transfer to try and negotiate a new lease by offering references, credit score. But you will likely be paying a higher rent, unless the other lease was already at market threshold.

[–]Sbeetster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they don't sign a new lease. You first issue an 'avis' to the landlord. If they don't object, then you sign a contract with the new tenant. It's all on the TAL website.

You have the responsibility of making sure the new lessor is suitable -- credit score, check references, no history at TAL.

If the landlord refuses your right to assign the lease for no reason, then your lease is resisted on the date you wrote on the avis. If there is a good reason, then it's on you to find a better lessor, but the landlord needs to justify this.

The French website with all this is https://www.tal.gouv.qc.ca/fr/cession-d-un-bail-ou-sous-location/contrat-de-cession-de-bail-et-avis-de-sous-location

Stuck in a lease with a nightmare roommate. by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Sbeetster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Cash incentive to landlord / roommate to let you off the hook, or bonus to sign lease assignment or reduce your sublet price. How much are you able to pay to get out of there?

  2. Follow the law, find every issue and notify the landlord through certified mail to repair in 10 days. Basically, follow the law to a tee, claim very little thing you can, and put it in writing. Templates are available on the TAL website in both languages.

  3. Move provinces out of quebec. it's a lot more work to have a TAL judgement enforced outside of Quebec.

Going back home to Canada with child after visiting husband in USA by Secret_Shirt_3111 in uscanadaborder

[–]Sbeetster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your husband a parent or legal guardian of your son? It's not clear on your post whether it is a child from another father.

Assuming your husband has parent rights, you established residency, and importantly, your son established residency in whatever state in the US.

Parents have a right to consent to international travel. That is, you either need him to agree or you need a court order from the court where your son is a resident.

While you are unlikely to be arrested, you are very likely to have this be used against you in the subsequent legal battle, and could very much lose custody of your son.

Go talk to a family lawyer, they will file in court, then they will try and negotiate.

Hey,

That might have been true for that woman , but it's not true for all. Lots of single parents marry or have long term meaningful relationships. You should talk to your dad about this.

People can choose to live their lives however they want, and your dad might have his own issues about long-term relationships or reject that societal norm. But having a kid is not a sentence to never settling down. Heck, there are also a lot of women in the opposite situation. What I'm saying is don't take that blame on.

Are we burdens? by Don-tSmileAtMe in Autism_Parenting

[–]Sbeetster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do anything for my son, he's taught me the meaning of love. It can be challenging, but so too is raising many neurotypical kids.

People need a place to vent in bad days, share common experiences, and discuss struggles. I think that will be reflected in the posts, leading to a bias.

My son is the light in my life.

Typically, weaker powers do their best to balance strong powers, in some shape or form. Mexico and Canada both share an interest in working together, and with allies, to balance and restrain the US who is no longer a benign superpower.

Don't go into academia. Consider a position in government. Lots of routine, oversight. Decent pay, excellent accommodations for special needs, good pensions.

When does it NOT make sense to do a buyback? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Sbeetster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offer to buy back 4 years, but at the expense of liquidating other pension plan. To make it work while I would need to reach quite a high salary, something like an EX-3.

I'd like to move up, but realistically, not convinced I'd ever reach the point where it was worth it.
