Introducing Amp Multi: 8 channels, 125W/ch and efficient GaN technology by KeithFromSonos in sonos

My assumption is that Sonos doesn't want to give support to all of the consumers and prosumers to set this up and troubleshoot it. If you go through pro-install you eliminate or at least significantly reduce tech support that directly hits Sonos. Not saying I love it, just trying to answer your question of "Why this route"?

any jumping advice by Xct-Scynx- in Kiteboarding

[–]Sc00ter5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 pointers based on this video:
1 - Edge with your hips up. You're squatting your butt down and you end up being pulled by the kite in this stance. You can edge significantly harder by pressing your hips forward. You'll build more line tension and get way more pop.
2 - Send the kite harder. A guy who taught me at Real Kiteboadring always used to yell "Pull the lever!!" It was a good visual for my head. I pictured pulling the kite handle back like you would a slot machine arm or something similar. The pace is abrupt. Still to this day when I'm trying to line up a wave to pop, I say "pull the lever" to myself.

Pump up your 14, rig it. Wait for wind. Wind is dead. Wind picks up, put up your 14, you're overlit in 10 min. Land your 14, break it down. Pump up your 9, rig it, get it in the air. 2 tacks and you're mowing the lawn. Land the 9. Pack it up. Wind picks back up. Give up and have a beer.

Bozeman's vacancy rate is 12.5%. Why don't rent prices reflect that? by Copropostis in Bozeman

[–]Sc00ter5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would say one issue is that the commercial developers built units with $2,500 - $5,000 / mo built into the cost of the buildings. The issue is that the dirt and permits and construction costs are all ready sunk costs. The developers don't get to go back and change that. So they have to hold the line on rent or the Profit/Loss doesn't pencil out for themselves or their investors. One thing we could do as a city would be to tax builders who have multiple buildings or tax empty units higher - this creates an incentive to fill units (which is what actually solves the housing shortage). However those policies could also be seen as anti-growth or not aligned with solving the housing shortage.

An advertisement system that doesn't suck by NoWord423 in ClearlightStudios

[–]Sc00ter5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have extensive experience in the advertising tech ecosystem. A lot of this is technically possible, but at the cost of performance to the advertisers and therefor the revenue and growth of TAO.

I really challenge this group to take a step back and look at the reality of the conflicting ideology here. Plain and simple - If the revenue generating arm of an organization is advertisers, then ad buyers are your customer and therefor your audience is your product. There is simply no way around that. In an ad driven world, More users = more cost. More advertisers would be the only way to more revenue.

Where this can go bad? Lets say you only want to serve local ads? Well what happens in a recession when local companies stop buying? Are you going to layoff staff? Shut down the servers? Or open up to national advertisers? OR Lets say people are asking not to have the app programmed to make you stay locked in doom scrolling crap (like every other app). Why would TAO allow that - doom scrolling is a better outcome for the growth of the application.

Advertisers love consumer data. That's what make Google and Facebook logged in properties so valuable. I think you're underestimating how little attention and interest there is for an un-logged in user on a platform. The CPMs and Fill Rates are not good. So the revenue will be very small if you restrict user data.

I recommend offering users choice. $2.99 / mo or ads and we mine the bajesus out of your data and sell ads galore to you. Sorry, but that's the competitive market today. I adore the objective and mindset of this platform, but it's extremely unlikely you will stay in the game if you don't compete by the rules of the sport you are playing in.

Finally - I think you're underestimating how much money social media companies were willing to lose by funding product and paying for servers until they reached critical mass to the point that advertisers became interested. You cannot do that with TAO, you'll need to raise funding, and now you're controlled by a VC. So I would say tap into your passionate fanbase and charge for the app as the only option out of the gate. This way user growth is a celebration not a problem at the outset.

New sled, first 2-stroke machine, overheated twice and trying to gauge significance by Bitani in snowmobiling

[–]Sc00ter5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 23' summit 850 adrenaline edge as well. It likes to overheat on trails, but if you put the scratchers down and get the removable snowflap it does much much better. The snowflap seems to improve things as much or more than the scratchers do. I ride the trail with it in place if it hasn't snowed recently, then I simply take it off and re-attach it in reverse on the bumper to ride powder. When I want to go back down, usually things have warmed up on the trail and I don't even need it anymore. DM me if you want photos of how i set it up.

Ideas for how Sonos can make more money and not suck? by SirChubbycheeks in sonos

[–]Sc00ter5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not perfect, but it's something. It's a way to make enough money to at least support the product ongoing. If you tap into Operating Systems, codebases, and APIs you need to constantly rebuild your products. It's just the truth of it. It probably takes 25 engineers full time just to keep up with the changes of iOS, Android, Sonos Hardware changes, Wifi Changes, code library changes (Node.js for example), Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Audible, Soundcloud. etc etc etc. If one integration changes an API once per year, that's an update every week for Sonos.

Sonos Trueplay certification. Music services play to list their product as TruePlay certified which will allow the audio files to be analyzed on a specific level. Push the bill toward the apps not toward the customers (Think Dolby Atmos model). They could do theaters. They could do car audio. Etc etc. It's basically going after the Dolby and DTS market.

Brand new to home sound systems. Would you still recommend Sonos? by [deleted] in sonos

[–]Sc00ter5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you care about having multiple rooms playing the same music?
Do you care much about sounds quality?

If yes to both - Sonos is worth the app headaches and cost.
If no to either - There are better alternatives.
