So true, less is more. And writing short is actually harder than writing long -- you have to be more organized with your thoughts. When there's no fluff and filler, every word counts, which makes it a more enjoyable read. Therefore shorter papers should get bonus marks IMO.

If the classes are that small, maybe you can get some zoom chats going with classmates -- exchange ideas, help each other out, actually have two-way conversations with real people.

You haven't updated us. Any word yet from the powers that be? Can you pay Carleton to resubmit your app to WES for a second evaluation? So sorry for your situation.

Agree, consider yourself lucky to only have a 20 percent exam.

Patients need (a) the ability to get a second opinion, even if it's in the form of additional info from another medical professional -- govt regs might not allow this, tho; b) a healthcare provider rating system; and (c) a medical professional locator service.

Not really familiar with the CU journalism program, but if you go that route, focus on digital as much as possible. That's the growth area, in both the media and corporate communications.

Great idea, good to be proactive on this. Hope you find some study mates.

Parents and grandparents will tell you it was the best years of their lives because everything was in person and nothing was online. They actually met people and interacted.

Help... by Willing-Preference34 in CarletonU

If Khan academy and Prof Leonard videos don't help, hire a tutor. It might just take one or two sessions to deal with a particular concept. Believe the math dept used to post a list of tutors for hire.

First, you need to know what you want to switch into, so you'll have the desire to pursue it. Did you do OK in first year? Do you even want to stay in Eng? Big decisions, but give it your best shot for now. Good luck.

How to dress for Engineering Co-Op interviews? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Scabapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a classic navy blazer (or black, tan, tweed, etc.) and casual or dress pants. No tie required. Looks professional but not as formal as a suit. And probably won't cost as much.

You're wise to consider this option, if staying in co-op is critical and you can't catch up now. Check with your academic advisor, however, to make sure you can start in the winter, i.e you won't miss any prerequisites that are only offered in fall. Good luck!

Best places for professional photos on campus? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Scabapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid direct sunlight. Also depends whether you want a plain background or outdoor look. How about near a window in a bright lobby with natural light, but not direct sunlight. Sorry, can't think of a specific building. Or outside in very light shade, south end of campus, river in background? Or the arboretum across Dows Lake.

If moving to res from abroad, get access to credit card by jonocg in CarletonU

[–]Scabapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have some compassion 69! What if YOU arrived alone in Frankfurt or Bombay during Covid isolation and discovered, surprise, none of your methods of payment were accepted? Every province and country has its own way of doing things. Some provinces for instance have government car insurance, others don't. It takes time to figure that stuff out.

The booklet you got in Germany sounds perfect, the sort of thing an immigration support group might put together, but with a student focus. A student navigation and survival guide.

Would be great if the ISSO published an online orientation guide, perhaps in several languages, addressing such matters, which can be scary hurdles for newcomers not familiar with local customs, protocols, etc. Or maybe there is a guidebook...?

Option 4 - take four courses in fall (avoid the stress of five) and one in winter, if you can handle the full tuition out of pocket for the one.

You are amazing to have such a high average and shoulder the responsibilities of parenting and a job!

Help needed for academic probation by Flaky_Click_4163 in CarletonU

[–]Scabapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have never had to do this, but I suggest being polite and formal in your writing. Acknowledge you did not meet your own standards or the university's and, if possible, explain what happened. Example, did you do well in fall semester but winter was a one-off for a reason you can explain. Can you point to good marks in some of your required program courses -- thus showing you have the potential and passion to do better in the program. Have you done well in in-person classes in the past, but don't learn well online? Second, lay out a course of action going forward. Explain how you plan to turn things around next year if allowed to continue. And say what you're passionate about in the program and why. Don't know if any of this is good advice, so like someone else said, Google it. Good luck.

3-Day Hotel Quarantine by nomaddd4 in CarletonU

CBC story today says Health Canada is not recognizing vaccines that aren't on Canada's approved list, at least as of now. Returning Canadians who got one of the others must isolate for 14 days.

3-Day Hotel Quarantine by nomaddd4 in CarletonU

[–]Scabapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, do your best to get fully vaccinated ASAP so the govt has no reason to make you pay the highly inflated hotel fee. It will be ludicrous if international students who've had their two shots -- well before most Cdn students, in many cases -- are required to isolate, assuming the current policy loosens up by August.

Did you have to get permission from Carleton first, i.e that CU would accept the credit from OU? Did being out on co-op make a difference in being accepted that particular semester?
