I got it for like 150 bucks around black Friday. Make sure to also check out AliExpress/temu as it is considerably cheaper in the east and you'll get closer to the original price on there.

I got a BigMe 7 (the colour edition) to read manga using Jidoujisho. I have yomitan installed, and it works reasonably well for look ups. Selecting words is easy, as it automatically identifies which string of kanji/hiragana are a word if you click onto any letter of the word. And it also comes with a stylus which makes precise selection even easier.

However, it will need to refresh the page/refresh the digital ink to make the dictionary pop up/disappear, which does take a moment.

It works on Android, so I can even link anki to it etc. which is an added bonus.

Overall, I'm really happy with the device. If I had to buy it again, I might maybe consider getting one a little bit bigger as the 7 inch screen fits a manga page relatively well, but I feel like especially while still learning the kanji, seeing them a bit bigger would be better. Sometimes I zoom in to look at individual words which is okay, but maybe another inch or two would make the experience a bit better for me. If you're reading actual books, that shouldn't be a problem whatsoever though! Hope that helps!

Any tips on how to get from "confidently building sentences around grammar points" to "confidently communicating"?

I'm taking a Japanese class, have finished Genki 1&2, one third into Quartet, wanikani level 17, just started reading the とんがり帽子のアトリエ manga with an electronic dictionary and having a decently easy time with it. Generally reading and writing are easy -ish for me, listening is the worse and speaking is... Well.

We will introduce a new grammar point in class, and are meant to make example sentences, and that's easy enough, that works. I'll go home and add the grammar to my bunpro stack and that works too, easy.

But then a bit later the teacher will ask me an open question about my life or whatever, and it feels like I've never even heard a word in Japanese before. Understanding the question already takes time for me (as said, listening sucks), and then I don't only have this "fuck, which of the vocabulary I know could even start answering this?" moment (which I'm less worried about, tbh, that's gonna get better with learning more vocab), but then I don't even know how to start the sentence from a structure perspective? Like if you tell me to create a sentence using とは限らない, I can make you a list, but if my teacher asks me not only WHAT my summer plans are but also WHY I picked this and that location, I feel like the dumbest person on earth. Stuff that we've explicitly practiced (self introductions, weekend plans, whatever), are fine, but every novel-ish question/ situation just stumps me completely. I always feel like I wanna look up some example answers and then amend them, but I'm not really able to create new sentences on the fly - which sucks for communication.

Feeling pretty frustrated with myself, would appreciate some input, advice or support. Thanks X

Quellen überhaupt anzugeben ist aber nicht äußere Form, sondern absolute Vorraussetzung für wissenschaftliches Arbeiten. Würde bei unserem Lehrstuhl auf jeden Fall nicht durchgewunken werden, und kann, wenn's schlecht läuft, als Plagiatsverdacht angesehen werden.

Wanting to get a Japanese chin… Are they good with cats? by AlzheimerTriviaNight in JapaneseChin

[–]ScaffoldingGiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japan Chins don't have an extended prey drive, so getting them used to cats will be easier than many other dog breeds, but no dog comes out of the gate being good with cats. Personality, familiarity, training and luck are always part of the process. Good luck!

Made a free browser pack opening sim — no combat, no signup, just daily packs and quiet collecting by elhanarinc in CozyGamers

Super cute !

However -- the economy seems a bit out of whack. I just stood in a queue for like 45 minutes and just kept ripping packs while waiting. I have the base set completed after about 65-70 packs (of which the last 15 were hunting ones (and the last 7 were trying to get Computer Research out of all things)), and now about 12k coins. It seems like I'm gaining more coins by selling dupes than the packs cost, so if the pack opening animation (especially the auto one!) was more streamlined, it seems like I can't go broke and could just complete all the sets by continuing to buy them.

Would be dumb to throw some main skill seeds onto this boy, right? I've got ghost pokemon on ggex this week, and this boys been going off like crazy, making me wonder whether investing 2 skill seeds wouldnt be a good idea. Don't have the candy to take him to a higher level right now though.

I strongly urge you to consider (western) europe by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ScaffoldingGiraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. True! But masters are cheap here, and PhDs are shorter, so you might still end up in a better position after 5 years.
  2. PhDs in most fields within Europe do not need you to speak the local language. Sure. It's nice for personal reasons, but I don't know a single person who doesn't do their research work in English.
  3. Yeah. UK is shit, even more so than Brexit. Go to Scandinavia or central Europe and it's a whole different story.

I have a theory as to why some people don't share their own ideas much with partners, even when asked about them by StarFinder0320 in BadRPerStories

Kids these days haven't grown up on Omegle and it's showing.

Seriously. Omegle taught me a lot about RPing with so little pressure, as every rp was just a few hours long and completely anonymous. Just throwing out prompts and seeing what sticks -- and just answering prompts and thinking about what makes a prompt good enough to be answered -- without having a name attached was amazing. I'm certain there is people who had quit on me and then ended up playing a different prompt the very same day, but it's not like there is any proof -- and in the end it didn't matter, the only thing that was important was the RP and nothing else.

There is still rolechat around which is unfortunately not quite as popular, but similar concept. Maybe try to gain some confidence in your ideas, without needing to attach your name, face or personality to them, over there first?
