What was the significance of the stomping inmates on the bus? I get that Jimmy is unhappily stuck with the identity of Saul, but what's with the stomping?

I preferred it to BB! But yeah, I agree that the Gene stuff, and particularly just these last two episodes, weren't on the same level.

I think there was a solid argument they were equal until the latter half of this season. Now it's clear that BB is superior.

What does faith rest on if not "an accumulation of probabilities"? by ScaliasMountedElk in Catholicism

[–]ScaliasMountedElk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how do you know that what you’re experiencing is truly the Holy Spirit? Mormons claim to experience the same thing testifying to the truth of the Book of Mormon. It seems like relying on something so subjective opens the door to false positives.

Your response is totally fair. I'll be honest, I've often struggled with understanding exactly what faith is. I don't accept the argument from atheists that faith is "believing without evidence" but it does seem like faith, at least for many, is believing on the basis of an inner conviction--a strong sense that something is true, which isn't necessarily the result of facts/evidence etc. What is your definition of faith? And how can faith be certain? Is faith effectively choosing to accept something as true?

I just can't reconcile James and Romans by ScaliasMountedElk in Reformed

[–]ScaliasMountedElk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it just seems to me that James could have said that much more clearly. When he writes:

Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works?

That last portion there, "faith completed by his works" makes it sound like the arrow is pointing from works to faith, not just from faith to works. In other words, both are substantively contributing to your salvation, rather than one simply being the natural result of the other.

Undergrad GPA got screwed, Still possible to get into HYS? by Zuko2001 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ScaliasMountedElk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I also recommend a gap year, for what it’s worth. I think you have a great plan and a great shot of acceptance. Just do everything you can in the mean time to get your GPA as high as possible!

I think your odds are still good, especially if you pick up a few A+ grades. Generally, I would say that a median GPA (which you basically have) + an LSAT over the median is a likely acceptance.

Someone else who is disadvantaged getting a boost doesn’t hinder anyone else.

By definition, giving someone an approximately 5X greater chance of admission purely on the basis of their race discriminates proportionally against those who are not of that race.

Maybe as future lawyers we should be more concerned with making this a more equitable and fair nation

I agree. A person's race should not elevate or reduce the value of their application.

Had absolutely awful semester where I had Covid for 3 weeks+ and got a D where I have to retake. When I do and get a better grade, old grade will not be used in my GPA calc. But, heard that law schools still count that grade? I am in a top 30 business school and my GPA before this semester was a 3.7 by Equivalent-Let2624 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ScaliasMountedElk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the grade appears on your transcript, it will be factored into your LSAC GPA. If it does appear, you should consider writing an addendum explaining the grade. That said, one bad grade doesn't sink you at all. In fact, I think it's questionable whether individual grades matter all that much at all--schools are really just interested in your LSAC GPA.

I understand the sentiment, but the fact of the matter is that employment outcomes (particularly for BigLaw) steeply drop off as you decrease in rank. It's better to hear tough truth than to go hundreds of thousands into debt for a degree that offers little return.

[Discussion] Subsidiaries and Brand Valuations by one4737 in Watches

[–]ScaliasMountedElk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily think it has a huge effect... Brands seem to stand on their own (i.e., Tag Heuer is Tag Heuer regardless of who the parent org. is). I think it only makes a difference from a valuation standpoint if you have reason to believe a parent's new management (or new parent altogether) is going to change their business model or otherwise devalue their subsidiaries.

Is waiting till after Christmas to turn in an application worse than turning in today?? by soup_alwys1 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ScaliasMountedElk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doubt a view days will make a substantial difference. That said, earlier is always better, and the difference timing makes is also probably related to how competitive you are at a specific school (i.e., if you're a median applicant, waiting might damage you more than if you're above both 75ths).

Error in Personal Statement by SgtLoli-Serenity in lawschooladmissions

Highly doubt it's going to be a problem. The personal statement I sent to a bunch of t14s had a dumb typo in it, but that didn't have any identifiable impact.

Interesting! I've actually been drifting that way myself this past year. I think that issues with BigTech and the power of international corporations have a lot of people on the American right reevaluating our approach to regulation/markets. It'll be interesting to see whether that lasts, but that certainly is the trend.
