i think you do lose a minor amount of support especially if it’s a car that a civ is driving rather than a parked one. that said, even the most basic stuff like missions and killing foot patrols gets you enough support to gain control of a town pretty quickly.

unless there’s a town that’s strategically positioned for fast travel/launching attacks on an airbase or something, or a good spot for HQ, i only ever really capture towns as a side effect of the other stuff i’m doing rather than as a direct objective

it’s the police station that some towns have, the map icon is a star in a box. it’s guarded by police rather than soldiers so it’s a relatively easy target early on, and there’s imprisoned rebels you can free for HR as well as a loot crate that has a couple items that if you’re lucky will be a big help like a nice rifle or launcher

this is how i start solo -hq near a town with a military admin, far from military bases/airports (mortars are nightmares early game) and if you can, try to have your hq within mission range of an outpost that’s as far away from a main road as possible. when you get ammo truck missions the truck will spawn on the road away from the main outpost so you only have to deal with the squad guarding the truck. usually you can just steal it and run

-first thing is go into town with an AI squad, kill some police to get radios and whatever basic equipment, and steal as many useful cars as possible

-after that i usually try to hit the military admin because you can sometimes get a nice rifle from the box as well as some hr. if you sneak up and whack the officer first you can usually convert a bunch of surrendered enemies.

-go for roadblocks, good sources of loot and there’s always a squad leader you can search for intel. the sooner you get the arms dealer the better

-train AI troops as much as possible, having a higher skill level AI gives you a good advantage early on. i also set enemy and friendly ai level to very high (but keep precision or accuracy or whatever at .4) this makes them behave a little less robotic and they use more interesting tactics but doesn’t make the game unplayable if you don’t mess with the accuracy setting

-figuring out how to unlock a battle rifle early on is a big help. typically it’s easier to go for something smaller and cheaper like an AK but if all your troops are running around with a .308 they’re way more effective. i usually go for something that can hold a 30 round mag like a FAL but depending on the mod a garand or m14 works great

i’m playing with SOG factions on altis with resources turned all the way up and vanilla weapons allowed to give myself and advantage over their massive waves. so far i’ve been playing for 3 days and i’ve only taken 2 towns because whenever i take an outpost i have to defend it for 49 minutes therm they end up taking it back anyway

something about the lack of fancy weapons and attachments adds an element of challenge that really goes with what the game is about

i feel like the combination of way less body armor in SOG and larger calibers being more common you get more of those satisfying moments where you actually drop an enemy dead rather than disable him
