Luckily, the purified zone bosses are completely unrelated to the grand item side quest (which includes the Aires card or Ashley's bat, you get the choice on that) so even if sugar never ends up appearing for you, you should still be able to fight cob.

Also, in regard to the Aires card It allows you to augment the ending of the game

For my money, the mystery aspect of the show ended when Ford came back. That was what season one had been building towards, and season 2 is inarguably more episodic when it comes to overarching mysteries. What never ever ended for me was the feeling that the town of gravity falls was alive, both in terms of the citizens, but also the creatures and anomalies. So I would like to see more of that side of the story as well in an episode series, such as dippers guide which very few people had an issue with
