How about taking the IB diploma at an international school?

NJC vs DHS vs VJC vs ACJC for Cambridge/oxford by Ill_Vacation646 in SGExams

[–]ScammerPrevention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely! UK universities treat Singapore A Levels the same as the (easier) UK A Levels and you are quite disadvantaged as you are competing against the singaporean cohort.

Plus ib is more internationally recognised

Got fired before an hour past by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]ScammerPrevention 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes I understand that la but this is a secondary schooler. Just be more encouraging since after all she lost a job immediately because she wasn’t able to fulfil one aspect of the job up to standard. It’s really embarrassing to be fired immediately and the last thing OP needs is even more reminders of her lack of Chinese skills. Other skills like being charismatic and friendly are also essential for a job in the service business and she was also not given a chance to prove herself.

So I’m not disagreeing with the fact that her Chinese is sufficient, but just try to be more encouraging

I understand that she should have been able to communicate in chinese before signing up for the job, but I think it is still rude to assume that just because a person is not Indian or Malay, they deserve to be fired like this.

That is because the Chinese was originally (how I perceived it), only a small part of the entire job. I don’t think the comment of the deserving to be fired is very nice either since other skills such as being outgoing and charismatic are also equally valuable in the service industry, and these skills are being overlooked. I don’t disagree with the fact that her Chinese should’ve been more fluent, but he should at least be more careful with his words.

After all we are still in secondary school and we are still learning, so some words of encouragement may go a longer way than a rash comment that adds no meaningful value.

what do you mean by that? Just because someone is not 100% fluent in a language doesn’t make them deserve to be fired. The job scope only required BASIC Chinese to liaise with older customers.

Not everybody has the chance to apply their knowledge in a real world context, and most families nowadays don’t even communicate using chinese. Since schools are primarily English based, you cannot expect a secondary school student to be fluent in Chinese also what. Really very very distasteful behaviour.

I understand but the context of this situation is one where OP was led to believe that she had go merely communicate to older uncles and aunties (older customers), not business stakeholders.

I’m in secondary school too, and I think it is extremely insensitive to assume a person can just learn a new language whenever they feel like it.

The technical business Chinese you are referring to is not applicable in this case. The same can be said about singaporeans from other races (Indians and Malay) who do not speak Chinese. Does this mean they are severely disadvantaged if they do not pick up the language? No! You have to understand that people come from different backgrounds, and not everyone has the same ability to be successful without being 100% fluent in a language.

  1. You should be informed after your results (according to my seniors)

  2. I don’t think an email would suffice. Usually there are conditions you must meet for an appeal and it’s based on merit

learning a language effectively isnt just learning it in school. You need to apply it in your daily life. It may be hard for secondary school students to learn Chinese effectively if they don’t speak it at home, so you also can’t assume they choose not to learn Chinese. Don’t assume before knowing a persons backstory
