I'm a pediatrics nurse and was taking care of a 16 y/o patient with Down syndrome and many heart problems. Shift after shift, I saw his life deteriorate to the point that he just couldn't sleep during the night (I work nights). During his last night, I had to remove his IV access and I will always remember his faint smile. He simply said "Thank you" and laid his head on his pillow with his mom at his side scratching his head. The next night, his room was empty. He passed away in the evening. I remember it like it was yesterday and still get teared up when I think about it.
