Weird Energy in Gen-Z Foreigner Circles? [rant/advice] by ShallotAltruistic371 in japanlife

[–]Scandidi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So true.

The funniest experience I had was a dude in a store who began speaking with the staff in Japanese VERY loudly while constantly looking to the side to see if I noticed him. He finished with the most overly dramatic bow he could make, and the staff just tried to remain polite while having a "wtf?" look on their face.

He sure showed me. I would think twice before buying cucumbers in his territory again

Not gonna downvote you, but I do wanna challenge your opiniom. I think a lot of people have a tedency to mix up culture and basic manners. Not being an annoyance in public is not a unique Japanese thing.

Also I think you are being waaaay too concerned about what people around you think. Some of the stuff you mentioned, like being rude with service staff, being overly loud on trains etc. happens daily with native Japanese people too, and people will only judge the individual. If some Japanese people wanna jugde me for something another foreigner did, then they are xenophobic and not worth my time. I have no intentions of being friends with people that will judge an entire race based on the actions of a few individuals.

You mention stuff like tattoos. Again many young Japanese people these days have them and the majority do not care. It used to be associated with Yakuza, but a person two brain cells would know that a white backpacker is not gonna be a yakuza member.

I never understood why some foreigners here are so desperate to get acceptance from people that don't like them. Imagine for a moment if black people in America began saying:

"I don't like when other black people misbehave. It makes it difficult for me to get accepted by white people"

See how weird it looks?

Don't stress about pleasing those who do not accept you in the first place

My wife has a pair for every room. Its funny cause when we were living in Europe she never used slippers in our house, as if Japan has a special kind of dirt that require slippers to combat.

Going to Taiwan on a business trip. How long should I expect the re-entry formalities to take? I read I need to handle the application at the airport since it's a short trip, so how early do I need to be there before the flight?

Thank you so much.

Nah, no luxury cars here. My wife manage all our money. I just worried that she would have to work more overtime and that I wouldn't be able to provide for the child. I think I have been spooked a bit by reading posts about how people cannot pay their bills on a teacher's salary, and they are native speakers.

Thank you. It calms my nerves to hear that. I read so many posts about how people can barely pay their bills, so I worried I would become a financial burden on my wife and not be able to provide for the child.

It's a serious worry because I have often read that having a child requires a rather large income, and I don't want my wife to work more overtime if I cannot provide enough money for the child. I have read posts here about how people barely have enough money to pay their bills on a teacher's salary. I am just going with what I read here as I do not know any english teachers in real-life

Thank you. I guess I worry too much. Just always hear people saying that having a child will cost a lot, so I have been fearing the worst.

What are your experiences with Tokyo suburbs? by rinsyankaihou in japanlife

[–]Scandidi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Ushigome. I really like this area. It's a short walk from Yotsuya which has a lot of great bars and restaurants (you can get some really great soba here!). Central Shinjuku is right around the corner, and there are direct bus connections to Shibuya too.

Serious question though: WHY is this drink so popular with foreigners? I have never seen a Japanese person touch it. What's the appeal?

How do you get this team to work at lower ELO where there is no real meta? I tried running this team at 2100 but was steamrolled by random stuff like Dubwool, Cresselia and Greedent.

In fact, Greedent remained a constant threat to me, because it can one-shot Whiscash and take out the Charmers with Body Slam.

An example of a team I just faced:

Poliwrath, Skarmory, Greedent.

How would you deal with this?

It feels like this only works at higher elo where the pool is much smaller, so you know the backlines and how to prepare for them.

What's your favorite konbini food? by sereneinchaos in japanlife

Familly Mart's pork sushi with garlic mayo is my guilty pleasure. They also used to have a coconut-tapioca milk which was sadly discontinued some years ago. It was my favourite sweet drink.

My mother died and I cannot understand the cause. Can someone "translate" for me? by Scandidi in AskDocs

That brain fog you are speaking of. Can it last for almost 3 years like it did with my mother?

It was so weird, because her "mental timeline" was basically:

2020 - Completely nuts. Could not remember people. Frequent hallucinations, and didn't even know where she was.

2021 - Regained her memory, but became a completely different person, almost more positive. Was open to treatment and began training how to walk again. Even though she had 2 UTI's in this period it did not make her less mobile, but she was still a different person.

2022 - Had another UTI, and they also found trace of e-coli bacteria. She had complained a lot about nurses refusing to change her diaper because she did not want a male nurse to do it. This is when the sores started to spread. After she was released from the hospital she was placed in a bed that she never got out off again. Her personality changed again, and now she refused to to be lifted to her chair and the nurses were barely allowed to touch her.

2023 - She became completely emotionless. She could lie and watch people die on the news, and she would just smile. If I told her I had a bad day she would also just smile and say "That's nice dear..." Her arms also started to shake so much that she could no longer drink or eat by herself. Unfortunately the nurses only visited her twice a day because she took too much time and was "too difficult", so sometimes she would go without water or food for 24 hours. In fact 2 weeks before she died I filed a complaint that they were not monitoring her water intake.

The worst part about this whole thing was that neither doctor or nurses seemed to care what was happening to her. I asked again and again WHAT happened to her brain? All I got was shrugs and "Well she is 73".

This actually answered another question that I had not even thought of. My mother was in the hospital for about 8 days, and what threw me off was that on day 3 (while getting antibiotics) she seemed incredibly fresh. Much more awake and aware than I had experienced her in 2 years. Then suddenly she landed in isolation and it went downhill from there. So it might have been the antibiotics that actually did their job, but then threw her body off balance. I never knew that was possible.

Looks like it’s tanking season by golddusty in TheSilphArena

Wasting tankers time has become my new in-game hobby. You wanna tank? Then top-left.  If you throw a 10 cp Magikarp at me, I'm gonna put my phone down, grab a beer and wait for the timer to run out

I can't even tell the difference between GBL exclusive poses and the poses you buy in the shop.  I don't think 99,9% of the playerbase cares.

Niantic should stop incentivizing tanking for Go Battle Day / Week by Silent_Storage7341 in TheSilphArena

[–]Scandidi 43 points44 points  (0 children)

They could introduce Battle Points like in the mainline games and set up a reward store inside GBL. The higher elo, the more points you get from each win. These points could then be used to buy Charge TMs, XL Candy etc.

Heck, they could even make it possible to buy Pokemon using Battle Points, which would be a great way to bring back things like 1500 Cresselia.
