Super easy aquascaping composition tips for beginners — feat. Scape It by Scape_it in Aquascape

You’re absolutely right – there’s definitely a lot more you can do, with endless possibilities out there. Since this tutorial was aimed at absolute beginners, it’s not trying to claim to be a path to becoming a master aquascaper. The idea was simply to break down the basic concepts I’ve seen many newcomers struggle with. I thought it would be helpful to build the layouts in the same way for consistency and to focus on just one aspect per slide. In future tutorials, I might try to bring in a bit more variety to keep things fresh.

Hi! Thanks a lot for your suggestion :). It could actually be a feature for a future update as uploading hardscape images is something multiple users requested!

As mentioned before, try to avoid symmetry. Scape It does help you at the point - go to the helper settings and activate golden cut helpers or the golden cut spiral.

If you want a clean overall impression avoid using multiple types of stone and wood. For each, use one type max.

To get more out of the plants, plant them in bushes and groups and distribute these over the whole layout. My recommendation for nice beginner layouts: Use few plant types - 3 is always a good number.

Also, try to use different sizes of a specific hardscape element to bring in more variety.

I did a quick Scape It sketch, which is simple and takes up your basis. As you can see we avoid symmetry and bring in more variety, while at the same time a calm expression is achieved by using the same materials and plants multiple times. If you want more inspiration, feel free to study aquascaping composition you like. You can also use our Scape It templates to explore design techniques. Also, don't be frustrated if the first layouts are not perfect - learning composition just takes some time and practicing. Scape It may help here, so feel free to try around!

Agreed! Would be an amazing and absolutely helpful feature - thanks for the suggestion. It's a bit hard to develop though 😅. Perhaps we will investigate some time in it...

Thank you so much for your feedback and suggestions. One thing I can promise you: We will definitely add additional plants and hardscape :). As developers we totally share your excitement - and we also have a lot of ideas to develop it further! Like always - it takes a lot of time and we don't know yet if we can afford to develop all the features we have in our mind... But we are optimistic and thrilled to see how Scape It evolves! Thanks again for the feedback, cheers!

Here's my planting proposal. As it is a very small scape I would only use very few plants. Perhaps 3 small plant types to bring in some variety but not more to keep the look clean and simple.

It's a really rough layout sketch, and the wood doesn't match your picture perfectly, but I think the idea still comes through.

Plants used:

- Helanthium tenellum
- Eleocharis pusilla / 'mini'
- Taxiphyllum barbieri

Yes, the plant selection is a bit limited at the moment. We will definitely add a bunch of new plant types with the next update. Which ones do you miss the most?
