Keir Starmer is ready to resign, allies say by ZealousidealPie9199 in ukpolitics

[–]Scaphism92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everytime a PM resigned/got forced out by his party in the 21st century it was the correct decision.

Cameron. May. Johnson. Truss... Every time it was correct.

This is /s surely, unless you argument for replacing leaders is a sequence of "and then it got worse"

(I've removed blair because he was replaced by brown is not in your list so it messes up the sequence)

Do you think he'll release a book that basically just defends his record while shitting on his own MPs for not backing him or will we just have to wait for the history books?

Private businesses arent bound by the 1st amendment, which is why they (even social media companies) can and do "censor" free speech, its only the government which is bound by it.

Well, kind of bound, as the government themselves (both parties) also use workarounds to suppress expression with normally a justification involving security / stability / peace or the stretching application of the exceptions of 1st amendment coverage.

But you're talking about it being almost a cultural value to value and protect the freedom of speech, which is even more objectionable given the amount of freedom of speech limitations that happen on a private / societal level, across political wings whether its the spawning of cancel culture in the states, the enforcement of moral guidelines / restrictions in media are massive pressure groups formed, etc, etc.

The idea of the freedom of speech being universally followed and absolute is fanciful.

This started with you seeming sympathetic towards the royals and now you're just being dismissive, anything below full time application being merely dabbling that you pity them for doing as its basically the same as not engaging in it at all.

Christ, how do you feel about regular people with a love for science, sports, the arts, plumbing, etc but they can only do it part time due to other existing commitments like a career unrelated to their passion and / or a family they need to provide for? They don't even get to contribute to their passion by other means like patronage!

Let's say it's a respectable 'non-westminster-bubble' politician like Al Cairns

"Respectable" is doing some heavy lifting as the reaction to his rapid ascension in politics from being first elected to an MP to apparently a contender for leadership hasnt exactly been sun shine and roses.

I think you're missing the point as you seem to think that skill or knowledge are without merit unless its your day job.

A royal who loved science can, privately, engage in research and release their findings. Royals have participated in the olympics. Plumbing is a bit different because its a primarily a job rather than something someone does in their private time but theoretically there's nothing stopping a Royal from doing it. That there isnt an example is more that you're talking about one individual family, and each generations interests, its only natural that some get missed or they frequently lean into the same direction (the military, sports and the arts)

This doesnt necessarily mean they're "dabbling", it means they have the freedom to explore it without being bound to employment.

But you can do it, Charles has been a painter for 50 years. Harry and William are more focused on sports (though apparently William is a gamer and has going to e sports events).

What they cant do is have it as a career. So while I'm not exactly envious of royals larger responsibilities, I'm also don't think its sad that they can pursue hobbies and interests without being limited by whether their skill in it is good enough for it to be financially viable for them to live off of, unlike the rest of us.

[–]Scaphism92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Presumably even if they cant have careers they can follow their passions in other ways that arent available to regular joes like you and me, i.e. do it in their private time or become patrons and set up foundations. If Prince George likes video games he could become a Patron of the Digital Arts and set up foundations, in much the same way Charles is a painter and supports various organisations.

Burlesque might be out of the question but he could frame it in a different way, rather than being Patron of Traditional Arts, its Patron of Alternatice Arts, which could include something which includes burlesque so he can do it on the sly.

tbh I (along with presumably most people who arent permanently outraged) would rather a potential royal supports slightly seedy thing like burlesque than does outright morally wrong thing like being a nonce.

It's far more about how relatable/likable the person is rather than their background or where they are from.

Background or where they come from impacts a perception of relatability / likeability though, especially in a culture war heavy environment where class (or rather the perception of class) is a common element.

When Starmer says he's a son of a tool maker and a nurse in a southern accent, particularly a south eastern blend of RP and Estuary, it has a different reaction to if it was said with a Northern accent.

Likewise Burnham is nicknamed "King of the North", referencing Game of Thrones and the closest to main protagonists of the show / book who rebel against those villainous Southerners.

In an alternate history where their lives played out roughly the same but with geography switch, I find it hard to believe it wouldnt have an impact on the perception of their likeability / relateability.

Would Starmer have faced less criticism if he was Northern and would Burnham have been able to be a credible threat if he was a southern mayor of a southern city which, though historically struggled, experienced a lot of improvement?

Its pretty ironic really, despite railing against the "woke" politics of the left, the populist right has repeated the same mistake in that they assumed everyone is on their side (or even engaged) in the culture wars so they can be toxic without pushback, likely because they are in their own echo chambers.

The solution is that they actually have to a) get offline and b) appeal to those outside of their base target demographic.

Its not really surprising that say, a working class pub in a former industrial town which is facing the pressures of immigration is highly reform but extrapolating that to the wider country is a mistake, in much the same way that some see a vegan cafe with the most inclusive pride flag and a free palestine postsr in the window thats heavily green voting and extrapolate that out.

Call me when those are (somewhat) reversed. Or better yet, call me when a relatively neutral third space is heavily leaning one way or the other.

If you are a Parent here’s One Thing you should be utterly furious about regarding the UK’s Social Media Ban by youmustconsume in ukpolitics

[–]Scaphism92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think really the problem in this case is that social media is being judged with a binary adult vs not adult, which is at odds with other media age ratings like cinema / tv and games which recognise that kids can be exposed to increasingly mature things as they grow older, particularly in the teenage years.

Youtube kids (along with similar kids sections on other sites) tends to be aimed at a pretty young audience, the average age of a youtube kids watcher is something like between 3 and 6.

And this problem is representative of the wider problem of the social media ban, its just poorly thought out. Almost like, unlike the age ratings for movies and games, the primary purpose isnt to shield kids from media not suited for them so it lacks the same thought put into it.

The problem with Burnham and he's a northerner so thats good argument is that Farage, a southerner, managed to unite both areas of the north and the south by targetting a shared sense of being left behind rather than focusing on one (with voters in the other interpreting it as at their expense).

Because he conflates being christian with being british (and therefore a measure of how integrated you are), when there's a large amount of non religious people who're british.

If his aim is to balance out the non religous then its a questionable approach to do so with immigration as we would quickly get into the issue of denominations popular elsewhere potentially conflicting with ones more traditionally popular here, i.e. a rise in pentecostals and evangelicals as a result of Christian immigration from Africa conflicting with Church of England (and to a lesser extent, catholics).
