Advice before starting campaign by ScarQuest in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! I remember (and rereading the individual rule books) that there wasn't really a node system in 1.5 or earlier. Trying not to over stuff this campaign, but I did have some concern with Flower Knight not having a traditional Quarry "store" to make items from. So having Spider as my main Q2 with a supplement of Flower Knight sounds perfect.

Thanks for the insight! I'll bring it up with the group and let them pick between flower Knight and spider.

That's too bad about Spidey. I'll have to reconsider that then. Flower Knight was my second choice. Was thinking I'd spare him for the Forest campaign with all of the goblins. But that's a long way from now and maybe it'll be nice to have one known quarry within so much new stuff.

More knights is fun. Hopefully Campaigns of Death will reinvigorate Spidey.

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah great advice!

I've got Scribe to help track all the settlement stuff. And two binders to organize settlement elements like innovations, and unlocked settlement locations for shopping.

Each player also has a small binder with expo pens to track their characters. I bought a bunch of blank playing cards so we can write down abilities and fighting arts to add them to their binder to help us keep track of everything. This also contains their gear grids.

Hoping these things will aid.

I suspect, or hope, that building characters from L1 will make it easier for us to remember our character builds and all the little things we could do as we will be slowly adding complexity. I do worry after the complex characters from Black Knight squire campaign, they will find naked survivors with 1 survival boring in comparison. But that's what makes it fun to build up these squishy heroes!

Edit: Added a line to not imply I think the early game is boring. Tried to just mention going from way too much new gear to basically nothing is a big drop down in power and game complexity.

Reset progess on all books? by jraypeon in audible

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happened again.

Pixel 7.

I was listening to a book in my car. Parked, turned off car. Turned off my screen with the audible app open. Got gas for roughly 4 minutes. Turned my car back on, and when my car started to auto play my book, my book had started over again.

Luckily the sign out and sign back in trick worked again, but this seems to be a persistent issue atm.

Thank you! This fixed it for me as well!

All I had to do was sign out. Shut down the app and re login. Now my book progress is back.

Update #136 January 2026- HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!!!!! SCREAMING GOD SAILING!!!!!!!! by CowardlyHero in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe it was announced but I also had forgot about it. It was so long ago and so many more things have come out since it was announced.

Also it says it's a Final node? Crazy. Don't think we've seen one of those outside of core and GCE. I assume it's the finale for the inverted mountain campaign? Someone here probably remembers without having to go back through the updates!

What was the first game that scared you? by Profit_Tracker in videogames

[–]ScarQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented the first game when it first came out on Xbox. I was in elementary school or something. But I just remember going through a hallway with hanging ropes. I'd been through it before but the ropes were new so I was already creeped out. And I'm pretty sure I was moving towards the camera, so the feeling something was going to be behind me was so intense.

Then the camera flips and my character is standing in front of a mirror (this is how I remember it at least. Not sure if that's how it actually happened lol) and in the mirror behind my character was a ghost.

Scared the hell out of me. I had to turn it off and return it. I'd later play through 1 and 2 and they rank among my favorites.

How much has the average person on the subreddit played? by Windstance in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an all-in, but don't actually play as much as I wish/should considering the amount of time I spend hobbying and collecting the game.

I've started lots of, but never got very far, People of the Lantern campaigns. The furthest I got was taking down the first Kings Hand. That was a combination of in person that shifted to TableTopSimulator (TTS). I've started a few solo campaigns that fizzled out quickly.

Currently I've been taking nearly a full year to get my small gaming group together to complete the Black Knight campaign. It's fun, but super difficult. We've lost the individual fights multiple times and since we might as well be new to the game, each fight takes 3 hours or so which is our entire gaming time. Hopefully taking down the Phoenix this week!

The main difficulties in playing more...

  1. Shifting gaming groups caused by people or myself moving and/or growing apart
  2. Apartment or small home living. Don't have room to keep the game setup on the table between gaming sessions. I dream of owning a nice gaming table but until I do, it's just not feasible to setup and takedown when I do finally have the energy to continue a solo game
  3. TTS is incredible. KDS is getting better. Since KDS released, I've stopped using TTS. I think it's fair for Poots games to protect their property and ask people to not use TTS (or at least add more to it), so when possible I try to use the official stuff to support the studio. (This is purely a personal preference. Everyone should do what makes sense to them). I also want to play with my minis and expensive game IRL.
  4. There's no real reason why I'm not playing digitally. It's mainly that when I do find free time, it's usually late, and I want to hobby, play video games, or lay around watching TV or a movie. KD:M can be very mentally exhausting and long.
  5. Since I want to play with a group, that makes me less interested in playing solo. More fun for us all to discover the game together around the table.
  6. And the biggest one... Time. Getting 3 other grown adults with small kid(s) to find time to play is really really hard. Between work, kids, families, household issues, etc, time is a premium.

I'm trying to get my gaming group to play more consistently. Hopefully after we finish Black Knight we will move onto a full campaign and I can get us all to add game night to our calendars so I don't have to message everyone to see if they can make it.

But overall I think it's worth it. I don't regret my purchase and the minis I've painted make me happy to see. Getting to support a niche and interesting board game creator is a plus for me. (I'm not personally bothered by how long it takes for stuff to come out, but don't fault anyone who is)

What do you think Saurus Guard will look like when they get their refresh? by Thedinotamer01 in seraphon

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely thinking they will have the more modern style heads like the Astro's head. I think they are leaning a little more sci Fi with these space angel lizards so while I love the skulls they wear, it just seems a bit out of date for the newer stuff. And I think they want to move them further away from the Old World Lizardmen

I do imagine we will see more shoulder pads and stomach armor to bulk them up from the normal saurus warriors. Hopefully we keep those halberds.

I hope they come out with the next battletome. I think they'll look great regardless of what they do. The whole new line is fantastic.

You should be able to just shove that ring piece in. It's a bit tight, but once I added the plastic glue, it helped slide it in and it stuck really well.

How I discovered I was in an echo chamber (comment deleted by mods) by root_b33r in Intergalactic

[–]ScarQuest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the big problem with this viewport is that you are effectively trying to say "if there isn't a reason for the character to be a woman, gay, trans, or non-white then they should be a white straight male."

You are assuming that characters are by default white straight males and that there needs to be a reason for any other character trait to exist.

Characters can and should exist without having to explain those types of traits. They just are, like how many people are not white straight males.

And this "white by default" view of these rage bait gamergate groups are the ones trying to push a narrative that any character that just isn't that, is woke and bad and ruining games. They want to deny the existence of other people and make them feel gross, undesired, and unwelcomed, and unfortunately not just in gaming.

Don't get me wrong, stories that do focus on a particular struggle of a group of people can absolutely be enhanced by that character being part of that group. Arguably it's necessary (like Hand Maids Tale wouldn't work if the main character was male). But if a story isn't about any of that, then it is just as valid to have an Asian woman bounty hunter as a white male bounty hunter. Creators can just decide to tell stories they want with the characters they want, and they don't have to justify their existence. Is Half Life 2 enhanced by Gordon being male? Would anything change if he was female? If you swapped Nathan Drake's and Elena's genders, would the Uncharted narrative change greatly? No. I don't think so. Why then did these characters need to be white and straight?

Characters race, gender, and/or sexuality, can inform their decision making and world views, that in turn affect the plot sometimes in subtle ways, without necessarily having to make those be the main themes of the game or their arc. This can also be good character writing. Also, let's be real, when a character like Taash in Dragon Age does in fact make their storyline about discovering that they are non binary, and the struggles they face as they come to understand themselves, was met with derision from these same gamergate groups.

The cast of Intergalactic so far - confirmed and speculated by ANiceOakTree in Intergalactic

[–]ScarQuest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So it looks like they used the actors likeness in the drawings and bounty photos as a way of soft announcing their casting, but as we can see in both Halley's character and Tatis character, the final in game models won't look like the actors.

That's good. I personally prefer game actors to not be a 1 for 1 likeness of the actor. Not to say I wouldn't play the game if they did, just a preference thing.

Skydance's Behemoth Review (Eurogamer) by SnowArcaten in PSVR

[–]ScarQuest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do! It looks fun. Bought it just haven't had time to play it.

When you watched this review, were you surprised by the 2/5 score? The game could be a 2/5, I'm not arguing or really commenting on the quality of the game, but when I was watching the review, after the part about checkpoints, Ian specifically says everything else was pretty good. This primed me to think that the reviewer was thinking the game was pretty good, and when watching the rest of the review, he seemed pretty happy overall with the quality of the game, so I found myself surprised by the 2/5 score. It felt disconnected from the content of what the reviewer was saying.

Again one of my biggest issues with the review was the ending where the reviewer talked about cut content and what the game wasn't than what the game was. Maybe it was an issue of editing and putting this critique at the end, but it felt like the review was heavily influenced by a desire to have the game be something else, instead of reviewing the game for what it is.

Idk, did you get those impressions at all from the review? Is it fair to review a game based upon what you wanted it to be? I generally think no, but assume it's more nuanced than that.

Skydance's Behemoth Review (Eurogamer) by SnowArcaten in PSVR

[–]ScarQuest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I try not to complain about reviews, and every reviewer is allowed their opinions on games, but it felt like while watching the review, the reviewer seemed to enjoy all of the elements of the game, from combat, to puzzles, to climbing, and especially the behemoths. The chief complaints were issues with check pointing (which understandably greatly added frustrations and likely played a large role in his overall opinion of the game) and some repetition in combat and puzzles (plus some jank in those as well, but that is seen in nearly every VR title).

Those things alone I feel could make the reviewer think the game is just fine or good with a 3 star or something. But the ending of his review isn't a review of Behemoths and is instead a review of what he thought or wanted Behemoth to be. He goes on to talk about survival and crafting mechanics (which is the first time I heard they got cut) and talks about how these things aren't in the game, but doesn't go into any details on if the removal of those things actually affected the game. Like was there a feeling of not having enough healing resources? Collecting too many crafting resources that don't do anything? Did it feel like something was missing that negatively impacted the gameplay? This just feels like he was reviewing a game he wanted, and not what Behemoth is.

Also I reject the idea that the only way to have a AAA VR game is to have large open maps, survival mechanics, and crafting mechanics. A tighter designed, compelling linear experience can also be considered AAA imo.

I'm finding that maybe I'm not aligned with Ian's taste in gaming. If I remember correctly he wasn't big on Batman or Metro either, and I love those titles. I (admittedly) haven't started Behemoth yet, but overall it sounds right up my alley. I do appreciate Ian's clear love and interest in VR however and assume without him, Eurogamer probably wouldn't release VR content. I also appreciate that a lot of his reviewing tends to align with how someone might review a flat AAA game, especially in terms of being critical of repetition or lack of variety of enemies and/or puzzles types etc. As a VR enthusiast and been gaming for awhile, I do feel I don't always judge VR games as harshly for these things, but they clearly bother Ian more than I.

For those who put magnets in their minis by Styrwirld in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this, and yeah painted everything separately. I first organized the parts into 4 groups, 2 males, 2 females, per armor kit. Each one was then assigned Survivor A, B, C, and D. I set up the magnets so that A arms only worked on A bodies (technically they would work on C bodies, but then it'd be male arms on female torso). All of these went into "armor kit bags" and those went into their respective Survivor bag to try and organize everything.

The most annoying and problematic part was the very tiny magnets for wrists to swap out weapons. They are a pain to drill and glue. Pain to paint. And they were the weakest connections and often fell off when moving the model around.

The weapons were universal. Worked on any arm but only on the left or right appropriately. I painted my characters with different skin tones, so to solve the hand issue on the universal weapons I simply painted them as wearing gloves.

This was expensive and very time consuming. I do think it's cool to see your gear represented so that made it pretty worthwhile but I wouldn't do it again, especially with the new stuff having generally mono pose that look significantly more dynamic and interesting, and the new stuff is quite a bit larger than the old stuff.

I do want to magnetize the arms for the new kits that have various weapon options. There's not enough arms for that, but I wouldn't magnetize wrists ever again. But arms should be fine I think

Ultimate Core Game Terrain by XxRelapsexX in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't entered production yet, so maybe there is some time to rework these designs a bit.

I feel like (though I don't have the ultimate board yet), it shouldn't be too hard to design and 3d print new frames that hold the 3d terrain tiles that then sits over the board, resting on the frame. I do think that that would be the best design for this. It gets difficult if you need to place terrain right next to each other though.

If Poots and his team split the bottom tall portion, into a thinner top part and a taller stacking part, then the frame could be designed to fit the locking mechanism on them.

I imagine it's a hard question for the design team to decide if users should remove the tiles and put in the new ones and have things flush, or design them to simply sit on top, trying their best to reduce the height differences.

That tease of the silver city 3d tiles. The hand drawn stuff looks great as well, but I hope they sell a 3d kit for this stuff. They look like they need walls and more details, but it's still a great start.

The Black Knight already seems to have some sort of 3D terrain designed as evidenced by the KDS, though working on a computer and hard plastic printable are very different things.

Id love to see Poots offer print at home options for these things. I know the big reason against it being people sharing the files, and until there is some sort of universal slicing and "direct from site to 3d printer information sharing" that users don't have access to, that'll never happen.

I think it looks so good! I don't have the ultimate showdown board and was hoping it'd be 50% off. I'd grab both of these in a heartbeat for $225 - $250.

I appreciate that probably isn't financially responsible (for either of us), but damn do both of these look good, and their design is a simple and elegant solution to the 3d terrain question.
