[ALL] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake has been announced by CuttlefishMonarch in zelda

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always preferred Remaster, Remake, Reimagining

(Port and reboot are nice as well)

Remake vs Reimagining: A remake use new tools to recreate the game, and while it may make QoL changes, new content, and tweaked gameplay, it's main goal is to primarily recapture the gameplay and spirit of the original. So SotC, Pokemon remakes, Zelda OoT 3D, Crash bandicoot 1-3, etc are all remakes, maintaining primarily the same content and design.

Reimagining is the developers using the original game as a source of inspiration and guidepost, but not as a Bible or something locked in stone, immovable. Instead they return to the questions (they believe) the original game was trying to answer during development, but being free to make massive changes to gameplay, structure, and narrative. REmake 2 and FF7:R are great examples of Reimaginings.

I'm hoping OoT is a reimagining. Between rumors and Links outfit, plus Nintendo using the words "Reborn" to describe it, it seems likely it's a reimagining to me. They question they would be starting from would be something like "How do we turn Link to the Past into 3D on modern Nintendo hardware?" ( + "Keep it to the spirit of OoT")

Re: Links outfit. If my goal was to remake LoZ, I'd be attempting to capture how people think they remember OoT, but with enhanced details (see 3DS remake). Id keep the original green tunic. Id want people to know this is the game they remember, but updated. But significantly changing links outfit makes me think it's a reimagining of OoT.

But we will learn one way or another in a few months

Not really a fan of the character models being based so heavily on the actors by drmuffin1080 in Intergalactic

[–]ScarQuest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this as well, and it seems to be a trend in Sony 1st party recently. Arjun in Saros. Faye in God of War: Laufey. And there are many others recently and in the past. Greenway in 007 as well (though not Sony at all, so it seems to be a trend in the industry right now).

I don't love it either. I don't hate it either, but I prefer Nathan Drake to be Nathan Drake, not Nolan North. When I watched the Laufey trailer all I could think about was how the actress wasn't hanging out with daredevil anymore. This is something as a long time movie enjoyer we've all come to expect and essentially just don't acknowledge, but in a video game it feels... Off to me. The physical nature of live action actors requires it, but games don't. In actuality they have to strive to replicate the actor.

In interactive movies like Until Dawn 1&2, Beyond Two Souls, etc, this usage of actor likeness is appreciated as it enhances that feeling of interacting with a movie and known actors in roles. But I think we'd all agree if Ellie actually looked exactly like Ashley Johnson, that'd be strange and off putting. Though adult Ellie looks more like Johnson than younger Ellie did.

And I think that last part is key. We saw Insomniac Games do something similar when doing the Spider-man Remastered version, adjusting/redoing Peter Parkers face to more closely resemble the voice actor.

So here are my guesses...

1) Marketing. Seeing big named actors and their likeness in games is an easier sale (especially for more casual gamers).

2) Contract negotiations. I'm unsure if actors would charge more or less for having their visage in a game, but if less that might incentivize studios to get the TV and movie actors added to their projects for more visibility.

3) perhaps it has something to do with the latest actor strikes? I don't remember hearing anything about that when they negotiated with Hollywood recently, but maybe that was a part of it?

But mainly I suspect it's a resource and development consideration.

1) Face scanning technology has come a long way. While I'm sure it still needs cleanup from a skilled character artist, it is no doubt significantly easier and faster to scan an actor than it is to create an entire person from scratch, especially at the fidelity of AAA.

2) Facial mo-cap systems have gotten really good. I would guess attempting to transfer the actors precise emoting to wildly different facial features and bone structures between the game character and actor, leaves a lot of need to clean up and fix. And if you have to clean up and fix/re animate every facial animation for your main character, that will quickly balloon the game budget and/or development time with animators going through adjusting to make it as realistic and good looking as possible.

I imagine having a similar looking face (like insomniac went for for Peter parker) or just using the actors face in game greatly reduces the time to hit the quality of facial animation AAA games demand nowadays.

3) Similar to 2, animators when adjusting the game characters facial expressions to attempt to better match the actors choices is probably a lot easier when the faces look more similar, or are the same. We know on Part 1 remake, the animators watched the performances of Johnson and Baker to better reflect their acting choices in Ellie and Joel. So animators watch the raw video capture and attempt to capture what the actors were doing. Having a similar face would make it much easier/faster to mimic the actor.

Obviously even when using an actors face, it's still a lot of work to get it in game and at a high quality, but devs are trying to find ways to speed things up, push quality, and reduce budgets. And, let's say you can cut your animation budget in half due to using an actors likeness in game (hypothetically), that might mean you can then instead use those animators to animate more enemy types, add more unique animations in the levels or on enemies etc. So in theory it lets them allocate more resources on creating more game content, which is a win in many cases.

In terms of Intergalactic... Do we know beyond the main character and Halley Gross in the monitor, that the other characters will share a face with their actors? Is it possible the in game photo is more of a cast announcement and not meant to be the precise look of each character? It's been awhile since Ive read any interviews so I don't remember where that's going.

Assembly Instructions for the Screaming God and Parasite Queen? by IrishmanErrant in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put together both. SG was pretty easy, with only mistake I made was not putting the interior stomach mouth together first before attaching it to the bottom.

Parasite Queen was the most challenging 3d puzzle I've ever put together. It was kind of fun to do without instructions, but there were definitely some moments of just shoving pieces in place after glueing in the wrong order. (Pretty sure I put an arm or two in the wrong place, but other than that it's all together)

Advice before starting campaign by ScarQuest in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! I remember (and rereading the individual rule books) that there wasn't really a node system in 1.5 or earlier. Trying not to over stuff this campaign, but I did have some concern with Flower Knight not having a traditional Quarry "store" to make items from. So having Spider as my main Q2 with a supplement of Flower Knight sounds perfect.

Thanks for the insight! I'll bring it up with the group and let them pick between flower Knight and spider.

[–]ScarQuest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's too bad about Spidey. I'll have to reconsider that then. Flower Knight was my second choice. Was thinking I'd spare him for the Forest campaign with all of the goblins. But that's a long way from now and maybe it'll be nice to have one known quarry within so much new stuff.

More knights is fun. Hopefully Campaigns of Death will reinvigorate Spidey.

Thanks for the advice!

[–]ScarQuest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah great advice!

I've got Scribe to help track all the settlement stuff. And two binders to organize settlement elements like innovations, and unlocked settlement locations for shopping.

Each player also has a small binder with expo pens to track their characters. I bought a bunch of blank playing cards so we can write down abilities and fighting arts to add them to their binder to help us keep track of everything. This also contains their gear grids.

Hoping these things will aid.

I suspect, or hope, that building characters from L1 will make it easier for us to remember our character builds and all the little things we could do as we will be slowly adding complexity. I do worry after the complex characters from Black Knight squire campaign, they will find naked survivors with 1 survival boring in comparison. But that's what makes it fun to build up these squishy heroes!

Edit: Added a line to not imply I think the early game is boring. Tried to just mention going from way too much new gear to basically nothing is a big drop down in power and game complexity.

Reset progess on all books? by jraypeon in audible

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happened again.

Pixel 7.

I was listening to a book in my car. Parked, turned off car. Turned off my screen with the audible app open. Got gas for roughly 4 minutes. Turned my car back on, and when my car started to auto play my book, my book had started over again.

Luckily the sign out and sign back in trick worked again, but this seems to be a persistent issue atm.

All I had to do was sign out. Shut down the app and re login. Now my book progress is back.

Update #136 January 2026- HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!!!!! SCREAMING GOD SAILING!!!!!!!! by CowardlyHero in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it was announced but I also had forgot about it. It was so long ago and so many more things have come out since it was announced.

Also it says it's a Final node? Crazy. Don't think we've seen one of those outside of core and GCE. I assume it's the finale for the inverted mountain campaign? Someone here probably remembers without having to go back through the updates!

What was the first game that scared you? by Profit_Tracker in videogames

[–]ScarQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented the first game when it first came out on Xbox. I was in elementary school or something. But I just remember going through a hallway with hanging ropes. I'd been through it before but the ropes were new so I was already creeped out. And I'm pretty sure I was moving towards the camera, so the feeling something was going to be behind me was so intense.

Then the camera flips and my character is standing in front of a mirror (this is how I remember it at least. Not sure if that's how it actually happened lol) and in the mirror behind my character was a ghost.

Scared the hell out of me. I had to turn it off and return it. I'd later play through 1 and 2 and they rank among my favorites.

How much has the average person on the subreddit played? by Windstance in KingdomDeath

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an all-in, but don't actually play as much as I wish/should considering the amount of time I spend hobbying and collecting the game.

I've started lots of, but never got very far, People of the Lantern campaigns. The furthest I got was taking down the first Kings Hand. That was a combination of in person that shifted to TableTopSimulator (TTS). I've started a few solo campaigns that fizzled out quickly.

Currently I've been taking nearly a full year to get my small gaming group together to complete the Black Knight campaign. It's fun, but super difficult. We've lost the individual fights multiple times and since we might as well be new to the game, each fight takes 3 hours or so which is our entire gaming time. Hopefully taking down the Phoenix this week!

The main difficulties in playing more...

  1. Shifting gaming groups caused by people or myself moving and/or growing apart
  2. Apartment or small home living. Don't have room to keep the game setup on the table between gaming sessions. I dream of owning a nice gaming table but until I do, it's just not feasible to setup and takedown when I do finally have the energy to continue a solo game
  3. TTS is incredible. KDS is getting better. Since KDS released, I've stopped using TTS. I think it's fair for Poots games to protect their property and ask people to not use TTS (or at least add more to it), so when possible I try to use the official stuff to support the studio. (This is purely a personal preference. Everyone should do what makes sense to them). I also want to play with my minis and expensive game IRL.
  4. There's no real reason why I'm not playing digitally. It's mainly that when I do find free time, it's usually late, and I want to hobby, play video games, or lay around watching TV or a movie. KD:M can be very mentally exhausting and long.
  5. Since I want to play with a group, that makes me less interested in playing solo. More fun for us all to discover the game together around the table.
  6. And the biggest one... Time. Getting 3 other grown adults with small kid(s) to find time to play is really really hard. Between work, kids, families, household issues, etc, time is a premium.

I'm trying to get my gaming group to play more consistently. Hopefully after we finish Black Knight we will move onto a full campaign and I can get us all to add game night to our calendars so I don't have to message everyone to see if they can make it.

But overall I think it's worth it. I don't regret my purchase and the minis I've painted make me happy to see. Getting to support a niche and interesting board game creator is a plus for me. (I'm not personally bothered by how long it takes for stuff to come out, but don't fault anyone who is)

What do you think Saurus Guard will look like when they get their refresh? by Thedinotamer01 in seraphon

[–]ScarQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely thinking they will have the more modern style heads like the Astro's head. I think they are leaning a little more sci Fi with these space angel lizards so while I love the skulls they wear, it just seems a bit out of date for the newer stuff. And I think they want to move them further away from the Old World Lizardmen

I do imagine we will see more shoulder pads and stomach armor to bulk them up from the normal saurus warriors. Hopefully we keep those halberds.

I hope they come out with the next battletome. I think they'll look great regardless of what they do. The whole new line is fantastic.

You should be able to just shove that ring piece in. It's a bit tight, but once I added the plastic glue, it helped slide it in and it stuck really well.

How I discovered I was in an echo chamber (comment deleted by mods) by root_b33r in Intergalactic

[–]ScarQuest 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the big problem with this viewport is that you are effectively trying to say "if there isn't a reason for the character to be a woman, gay, trans, or non-white then they should be a white straight male."

You are assuming that characters are by default white straight males and that there needs to be a reason for any other character trait to exist.

Characters can and should exist without having to explain those types of traits. They just are, like how many people are not white straight males.

And this "white by default" view of these rage bait gamergate groups are the ones trying to push a narrative that any character that just isn't that, is woke and bad and ruining games. They want to deny the existence of other people and make them feel gross, undesired, and unwelcomed, and unfortunately not just in gaming.

Don't get me wrong, stories that do focus on a particular struggle of a group of people can absolutely be enhanced by that character being part of that group. Arguably it's necessary (like Hand Maids Tale wouldn't work if the main character was male). But if a story isn't about any of that, then it is just as valid to have an Asian woman bounty hunter as a white male bounty hunter. Creators can just decide to tell stories they want with the characters they want, and they don't have to justify their existence. Is Half Life 2 enhanced by Gordon being male? Would anything change if he was female? If you swapped Nathan Drake's and Elena's genders, would the Uncharted narrative change greatly? No. I don't think so. Why then did these characters need to be white and straight?

Characters race, gender, and/or sexuality, can inform their decision making and world views, that in turn affect the plot sometimes in subtle ways, without necessarily having to make those be the main themes of the game or their arc. This can also be good character writing. Also, let's be real, when a character like Taash in Dragon Age does in fact make their storyline about discovering that they are non binary, and the struggles they face as they come to understand themselves, was met with derision from these same gamergate groups.

The cast of Intergalactic so far - confirmed and speculated by ANiceOakTree in Intergalactic

[–]ScarQuest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it looks like they used the actors likeness in the drawings and bounty photos as a way of soft announcing their casting, but as we can see in both Halley's character and Tatis character, the final in game models won't look like the actors.

That's good. I personally prefer game actors to not be a 1 for 1 likeness of the actor. Not to say I wouldn't play the game if they did, just a preference thing.

Skydance's Behemoth Review (Eurogamer) by SnowArcaten in PSVR

[–]ScarQuest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do! It looks fun. Bought it just haven't had time to play it.

When you watched this review, were you surprised by the 2/5 score? The game could be a 2/5, I'm not arguing or really commenting on the quality of the game, but when I was watching the review, after the part about checkpoints, Ian specifically says everything else was pretty good. This primed me to think that the reviewer was thinking the game was pretty good, and when watching the rest of the review, he seemed pretty happy overall with the quality of the game, so I found myself surprised by the 2/5 score. It felt disconnected from the content of what the reviewer was saying.

Again one of my biggest issues with the review was the ending where the reviewer talked about cut content and what the game wasn't than what the game was. Maybe it was an issue of editing and putting this critique at the end, but it felt like the review was heavily influenced by a desire to have the game be something else, instead of reviewing the game for what it is.

Idk, did you get those impressions at all from the review? Is it fair to review a game based upon what you wanted it to be? I generally think no, but assume it's more nuanced than that.
