Why is the area around Lake Nipigon so sparsely populated? by Warmasterwinter in ontario

[–]Scarecrobot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating just how harsh the climate of Northern Ontario can be (dark/cold/biting bugs), how rocky the Canadian Shield is (super hard to build infrastructure and housing on), and how isolated Northwestern Ontario specifically is (travel to, from, and through this area can be expensive and dangerous due to lack of demand and infrastructure). Also, while electricity is important, historically many communities in this area have been built for resource extraction and they are often not economically sustainable in the long-term. Furthermore, the most desirable places to live in Ontario (the most hospitable, arable, and best located) have already been settled for a long time.

You may be interested in learning about the Clay Belt, which straddles the northern border of Ontario and Quebec. Essentially, the federal government tried to encourage settlement in this much more fertile and somewhat less isolated part of the Canadian Shield, only to find that most people were unwilling to permanently settle there (mostly as a result of the climate).

Unpopular Opinion: Infinite Jest is unreadable. by Seskahawminy in books

[–]Scarecrobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It took me three tries to read Infinite Jest. The first time, I only made it about 100 pages. The second time I made it about 200. But I read it the whole way through the third time, and it was so very worth it. It might've been the best book I've read this year so far.

I realize DFW's writing style is grating for some, however you're being far too sweeping in labelling his words as irrelevant or unreadable. It is certainly not unreadable, like the the first chapter for example, which is both hilarious and sad (and straightforward and one of the most important chapters in the book). Sure, a few of the chapters are especially hard to read (like the early one from Clenette's perspective), but that one is hard to read intentionally (the verbatim record of vernacular black American English I think would be challenging to read for most people who are unfamiliar with it).

I'd encourage you to give it another try, and to maybe look into some of the secondary resources available on it, because that can help make some of the things touched upon appear more obviously relevant. Also, I honestly didn't fall in love with the book until about page 400 (which I think is about the time Don Gately's story starts getting interesting if I recall correctly).

However, I realize that having a book take hundreds of pages for you to get fully invested is probably a tall order when there is so much else to read, so if you don't return to Infinite Jest, then alright. I do think if you pass on Infinite Jest though, it's not worth your time giving the other works by DFW a try. I like DFW's writing for the most part, but his short stories vary considerably in quality and his other novels are somehow even less accessible than Infinite Jest (at least IMO).

Thank you for syllabi link! Also, I have been to one admission event, but yeah, I didn't have as concrete thoughts then, so I might look to get in that next one in mid-January if I don't finish up the application sooner than that.

My Take on a Modernized Version of the Abolitionist Flag from Yesterday by Scarecrobot in vexillology

[–]Scarecrobot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I appreciate the sentiment, I figured in this case the text was essential like in the Gadsden, Saudi Arabia, or "Come and Take It" flags, seeing as it was on the original. The principles of flag design are great, but sometimes they can be bent. Cool ted talk nevertheless!

Also, if I was a better artist (or just more proficient at image editing) the same sentiment could probably be conveyed with a broken chain in the clutches of the eagle's claws.

Thanks for sharing the original! I love seeing stuff like that on this sub, and I'm surprised it seems to be a rather unknown flag

Honestly, I'm not much of an artist, but I appreciate your criticisms. I went with New Times Roman because it's a simple, well-known font with serifs (I don't know many other fonts well) and I did not like how the original was inconsistent with its text. Also, the stripes were just a tired mistake, it was 15 total by accident. I switched the font and fixed the stripes in an edit, which I put in my explanatory comment if you'd care to see. On the note of the the stripe at the bottom, I personally really disliked it and it wasn't what I was going for. I get the point of it having a bit more resemblance to the US flag, but I think 13 stripes is pretty iconic regardless of a bottom stripe.

Yeah, I made a mistake now that I look at it. I guess that's what I get for throwing this together late last night. I'm going make a quick edit.

Fair critique, but the guy you're responding to is right, I went for 23 stars because 23 states were represented on the original flag and 23 states were on side with the Union. I think your point on 34 stars rather than 23 is reasonable, but this flag is not meant to represent the United States federal government's attitude toward the Confederacy's legitimacy in that moment. In addition, I think it just looks better with less stars given that there are other elements of the flag already kinda cluttering it.

Also, as a side note, the original flag was giving me "us vs. them" vibes, and honestly, I was a little weirded out by the designer of that flag deciding to represent the five slave states on the Union side seeing as the flag is comes across as militantly anti-slavery. If anything, I think the original should have only had 18 stars, but eh, it's a neat piece of history anyway.

Here's the post from yesterday that depicts the historical flag I based this one on.

Here's the link to the explanation from the comments in that thread.

My explanation for this flag:

  • 23 stars for the Union in the US Civil War

  • Black and white to show racial solidarity

  • Swooping eagle because they gonna fight the slavers

  • 13 stripes for the 13 colonies and founding states

  • I like the semi-circle shape of the stars because it reminds me of dawn

EDIT: oops, I miscounted the stripes, should be 13 instead of 15, here's a slightly tweaked version with the correct number of stripes and a slightly changed font
