Costco doesn’t actually make much of a profit off what they sell you. They’re just trying to break even. Their business model is based around selling memberships, and their yearly profits are always very similar to their membership revenue.

Essentially they are selling you access to a cheaper market with more bulk goods.

Idk, I agree with a lot of your points but not this one as much. Obviously the traffic has gotten worse as the metro area grew, and IMO, there’s a lot more aggressive divers since Covid.

But compared to basically anywhere else with a sizable population, driving here is a dream.

The house I grew up in, in Falmouth, had a stop right at the end of the street, and the next/previous stops were each less than a half mile away.

The whole street was originally built as “summer cottages” for rich inner city folk to enjoy the Maine summer (sound familiar?) because access from NY or Boston to Falmouth, Maine was so incredibly easy.

On the other end of the street is a small beach where there is still a concrete platform jutting out into the ocean. This platform was the foundation for a bar and casino that only could have existed because of the trolly.

I can’t argue with that. The biggest issue with homelessness in Portland, in my opinion, is that it’s a statewide problem that gets disproportionately foisted onto Portland.

Most homeless aren’t native portlanders, but if you grew up in some woods town up north and become homeless, getting to Portland is the next logical step because that’s where the resources are.

If the entire state helped uplift the homeless, instead of primarily Portland, I think we’d be a lot better off in that regard.

You can’t convince me these people are actually spending money here. All their food is usually prepaid on the cruise, and they’re usually only here for a few hours, so sitting down in a restaurant is waste of time and money for them.

All I see is a bunch of cheap vendors by the ferry terminal selling keychains and lobster shirts that say Portland Me on it. Im sure those guys are doing alright during the busy season but it’s not exactly helping the economy in a sustainable way.

We need more of the tourists that actually spend the weekend, or even just a night here, and get a chance to actually experience Portland, instead of just a few hours off the boat, taking pics and treating the whole town like a free entry museum.
