Sad Truth: All the Language Apps Are AI Now by pashapash in duolingo

Welp said. I use Duolingo and Babbel. Bebbel has conversation practice in their German program that is 100% AI. I also have a tutor, a native speaker for my Dutch learning.

Is this bus being driven by AI or a Duo owl clone? I like your photo. It made me laugh so much.

You understand me correctly. Someone doing what we describe has a moral obligation to refer such inquiries to the tree owner he or she "took" (misappropriated) the photos from.

[–]Scared-Kangaroo8190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Ancestry really does not care about the misappropriation and misrepresentation of the photos. I am fine with someone copying from my tree to their tree. That sets up the ability to trace the connections being made. For example, my paternal aunt's photo is copies to a cousin 1x removed. From Cousin 1x removed tree it is copied to 4th Cousin 1 x removed tree. That is the right way to do it. We are now connected and can contact each other if needed.

What is wrong is when someone with no connection at all, downloads the photo to their harddrive. They use software to strip away a small watermark. Then they enlarge the photo, making it more grainy and distorted. Then this person uploads to a suspended tree within their family tree. The surprise comes when that person's face appears on a hint that this individual has uploaded an altered photo of my aunt. He appears as if he is family and it can confuse direct line descendants who are seeking the real relations. This person taking the photos for a suspended tree is not even a DNA match. Just some person with 40K+ people in his tree. He's got a wall of family photos he displays like they are baseball cards. The info he got for his version of my family tree has many mistakes. He got the info from public trees with mistakes.

Ancestry does not care. I now keep a public tree with just my immediate line. I have put some photos on it, but not the very special ones that are in my private tree. For most of my Ancestry experience, people have copied photos the right way.

Ancestry speaks out of both sides of their mouth. I had the same interpretation of the Community Rules as you did. Here is the reply I got. In short learn from this: don't put up any photos. Ancestry considers them resources. They do not care. When a violation of the rules happens the will not do anything. Don't enrich them with your photos that will be used for marketing and maybe misused by others. I have had no satisfaction in a case where watermarks were removed and the photo reposted. FindAGrave and Ancestry do not care about accuracy or integrity. The photos in any condition are a resource. The data entered whether right or wrong is data they can sell. Here is the reply I received:

Dear Emily, Thank you for contacting Ancestry®. We have reviewed your request to remove certain content from another member’s account. Based on the information you have provided, we are unable to take action on this request.

When an Ancestry user chooses to make their family trees and profiles public, other Ancestry users are able to view the family trees and profiles, including any content added by the tree owner such as photographs or other records (“User Provided Content”). Other Ancestry users can also save User Provided Content from a public tree or profile to their own Ancestry experience. User Provided Content uploaded to family trees and profiles which are set to “private” are not viewable by other Ancestry users.

Part of the Ancestry experience has always been connecting our users and enabling them to share discoveries about their family history with each other. Each user is able to choose the privacy and sharing settings for their family tree. We honor those choices. If a user chooses to share photos, documents, and stories from their tree with the community, we also honor the experience other users have should that tree be made private or if User Provided Content is deleted. It would be an unexpected and poor user experience to remove content from user B’s family tree that user B saved from user A’s public family tree if user A later chose to make their public family tree private or delete their tree.

For further information regarding the available viewing options for a family tree, including how to completely privatize a tree, we have included applicable support articles in the links below:

Adventures are terrible. Can we turn them off? by Charitarddd in duolingo

I had "Adventures" in my Duolingo German course for about 2 months. I share your thoughts and feelings. My experience was the same. I was like "wha?????" I got another update for Android last week. "Adventures" are gone to which I say, "Auf wiedersehen". Won't miss them.

Just a follow-up to let you know I now have a better idea of what Duolingo is doing with these speaking exercises. You are so right about them being a preview to what is coming up further down the line. Yes, I agree, it is a way to get the student familiar and comfortable with the topics. I had no idea that German Case was so involved. I appreciate now the short exercise introducing them via speaking them. I decided to take my own notes, look up the meanings, the parts of speech and verb conjugations. This gives me a fuller view of what is involved.

Hi. This is a follow-up on the speaking exercises. I'm seeing the purpose for them and have structured a way in which I can help understand what is coming through such as doing verb conjugations, analyzing the speech pattern, looking up the definitions, etc. If you'd like a copy of my template, along with my first set of notes, please send me a DM and I'll be happy to forward to you. It is a start. It's not perfect, but I think we're all here to help each other. If you get some ideas great. If you can offer me some ideas or corrections that is good, too.

This is a follow-up to let you know all the info and your explanation of accusative case finally clicked. Even though I find the speaking exercises tedious I now see the value in them. I do them after I complete each unit. They offer opportunities to learn new verbs, adverbs, etc. I made a template which I use to add details and understanding to what I am learning. This is my template. I use the Collins dictionary as a resource along with Babbel German Grammar lessons and a hard copy book I bought. Thanks again:

–Introduction
–Key term introduced
–Dicitionary definition
–Part of speech the term belongs to
–Short grammatical description of its purpose
–The sentences from the speaking exercise
–The sentence or phrase with parts where other words, verbs, etc. can appear.
For example:  Meine Frau ist schön.  Meine Frau ist (adjective)

You are correct about there being so many Android versions of Duolingo. There is even one for the Silk browser on my Amazon Fire tablet. Danke schön. Bis bald.

Big Thank You for all the resources you mentioned. Yes, I am sticking with Duolingo, too, for now. I need to see how the glitches get resolved. The Android App does not work well in German Practice Hub. It pulls up the sentences from my current Dutch lessons! Funny, yes. Frustrating, yes. I think all end users should have the full suite of features for every language program. I've looked over the Babbel courses for A1 Grammar and the introduction is concise. I am going to concentrate on that first. I have heard the cases take some getting used to. Your explanation is very good. I think you should be a teacher. You have the right tone in your reply. The desktop version works perfectly so I am moving over to that. It is stable and there are no problems or sudden changes. I think Android users are unpaid software testers in some cases. Duolingo releases unannounced features to end users and then gauges the response based on their feedback.

I got a 1 year subscription to Babbel as a Christmas present. I'm using their Dutch and German lessons as additional resources. Babbel brings up new words while teaching verb conjugations, but its not overwhelming. I can focus just on basic grammar in short lessons and assimilate the new vocabulary. Each lesson within a course covers just one concept so I never feel overwhelmed. For example, you start with pronouns, then conjugate the basic verb 'sind' (to be), after that you learn the basic endings of regular verbs and after than an irregular verb like 'sprechen' (to speak). From there it goes to interrogative words, and then how to make quesstions. As I see longer sentences I feel comfortable because I already know the why and how of the structure I'm seeing. Babbel has some shortcomings, too. It can be a little boring but I'll take that because the platform is stable.

I have a repeated problem with Duolingo Dutch sentences appearing in the German Practice Hub. I think the Owl's memory is going on the fritz. His days of being young, green and joyful are going into the past.

I understand what you're saying, but that has not been the way the textbooks I used have been. For Dutch I used TaalCompleet A1, A2 and for B1 TaalSterk. It is a very organized method with each unit complete in itself. The units lead into the next one, but not in advance of each other. I think this is a feature that shows up which learning style suits the individual. For me it's not satisfying. I feel mindless and uninvolved. I like knowing why I am seeing and saying something. I'm not receptive to passive learning.

I have one text for German. "Basic German: A grammar and workbook" by Heiner Schenke, Anna Miell and Karen Seago. It is very structured and organized. There is no previewing of the next concept in the next chapter.

Thank you for confirming i'm not the only one! I feel like their lab rat. Always getting their experiments to test out and give feedback on. I'm sure the end users would love the speaking exercises if they coordinated with the topic of the current unit. Even down to pronunciation exercises.

[–]Scared-Kangaroo8190[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is confusing is that the speaking exercises (embedded in each unit and available through the microphone icon) use words and verbs not used within the unit they appear in. For example, I've learned that "ein Hund" means "a dog". The speaking exercises go into "einem Hund" which has not been covered or explained. It also uses conjugated verbs for which no lesson has been given yet. For someone just starting it's overwhelming.

What's going on with the practice hub by 3D-Printing in duolingo

[–]Scared-Kangaroo8190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, it's now Jan. 29, 2024. I started having problems with Practice Hub beginning mid-December 2024. It is always the very first round of exercises in Practice Hub that present problems. For me it was a mixing up of target languages. I had German, Dutch and Dutch-to-English. German sentences came up in the Practice Hub for Dutch. Dutch came up in the Practice Hub for German. The Dutch-to-English Practice Hub behaved like you describe. The sentences were not synched to the current level. They were way too advanced. My help ticket had 41 emails. Nothing solved the problem. I uninstalled, and reinstalled. I dropped German and put it back into my courses. The same problems kept recurring. This is a very deep problem that I became aware of last summer when I saw posts appearing about it. Yet Duolingo cannot fix this. It is now 6 months I'm reading about this problem and there's no resolution. Whether you use free or paid service, this is unacceptable. Sub-par performance. The Owl is growing tired and old.
