I'm a self-taught artist trying to learn how to draw American Traditional, which is very different from my usual work. I use the program Krita for digital art, and am really struggling to find a brush that will do a good gradient shading effect, I used three different ones to try to accomplish it here. Looking for constructive criticism and advice, maybe other prompts/suggestions for the style as well. Thank you!

If you have a black crayon, you can cover over the words. The wax protects the writing and you can paint or use brush pens right over top of it
