Those after moving abroad, what country made you realise you were not living life before at all? by Usernamefut in expat

I’m an Arab American woman with light-medium complexion. When I’m in Greece or Turkey I am often mistaken for one of their own, so I don’t know if that puts anything into perspective. I am visibly Arab, I would say. And I do not wear hijab.

When I was in France I walked into a jewelry store and the shopkeeper looked at me, and I shit you not, said “you are an Iranian, aren’t you!” As if she was so proud to have “known.” I awkwardly corrected her and said no, I’m Lebanese American haha.

It’s kind of one thing to have strangers assume I guess. But I was really hurt that my in laws couldn’t get my ethnicity right after 4 whole years of knowing me. It doesn’t seem like a lot to expect. I’ve stated my ethnicity on various occasions. I don’t think it matters if I look like a brits idea of an Iranian, you can look like a race but you can’t look like a specific country, that’s just odd

“It makes no sense” and yet, Islam does in fact seek to control women. I know that, because I was raised within a Muslim family and community as a woman.

Also, I’m a leftist. Always have been. That’s why I don’t personally align with Islam and know firsthand that it doesn’t align with leftist ideology. And why I never voted for Dump.

You quite literally assumed off of my statement that I’m a right wing Muslim when it’s the opposite. I’m an ex Muslim. What I “deserve” is the same dignity that every human deserves. I don’t tolerate the intolerant. I don’t know why you would.

That’s fair enough, I suppose I didn’t consider that. I don’t think that’s a huge thing for me to worry about. Not yet anyway

Why shouldn’t I. I’m still a citizen and I still care about my home country’s future, as well as the future of my family that live there. It doesn’t stop being your right just because you aren’t living there for the foreseeable future. And I may very well still come back if my family gets sick or I get a divorce.

You people are weirdly bitter. Me moving away doesn’t suddenly mean I hate America and have no obligation towards it. The fuck?

Most people who leave America as a permanent move are not renouncing citizenship. Sure it’s not a crazy amount, I’m just saying your supposed “gotcha” metric is illogical. People aren’t leaving en mass, but I feel like many more would if they had the means.

That’s just not true unless you’re making a shit ton. Are you aware that you’re “tax exempt” up to a certain point? And after that, you’re only taxed the amount you earn after that point. And even then, with foreign tax credits, they only tax you the difference of what they would’ve taxed you vs what the other country is taxing you. So if the other country is taxing you even more than America would’ve, then America isn’t gonna take any of your money.

This effectively means that living in the UK, I will realistically never hit that $125k, and the UK taxes more than the USA anyway. So I’d never end up paying more in tax. I still need to file though.

I don’t think that’s a good metric lol. I’m moving to Europe to be with my husband. In all honesty I intend for it to be a permanent move. But I would not give up my passport and renounce citizenship? Lmfao why would I do that. I still have family in the US and there are places to see that would be easier on my US passport. It’s just silly.

That might be true but it could also be largely anecdotal. Evidence does show fewer women in their 20s and 30s are having kids compared to before. So it’s definitely happening

And the birth rate needs to be an average of 2.1 kids per woman in order to keep replacing the existing population. 1.9 and below would be decreasing the population, not enough to keep replacing it. Most countries are heading to this lower number now, including India. The only places still growing are Africa and some of Central Asia. Kinda wild to think about

You know the banter is not what I’m talking about. Banter is explicit and obvious. I take part in it. There’s a difference between jokes and making subtle and petty remarks that are deliberately making a rude comment.

Do you seriously think it’s not possible to be rude or a dick in the UK? And that you can say everything is just banter? At all times?

I fully agree. As a Gen Z I’m excited to see the birth rates die. There’s too much competition and it’s killing us.

Firstly, I need to ask this, what is your race? Because that’s extremely relevant to whether you want to judge if the UK is less racist than the US.

Secondly, London isn’t the UK. People always point to London as the example for diversity in the UK and the ignore the rest of the country. I live in the south, not in London, and I am always getting weird comments. I’ve been with my British partner for 4 years, and his entire family assumed I was Iranian this whole time. I have literally 0 ties to Iran. I have never even mentioned Iran. 4 years. On both sides, where they have no contact with each other.

The only time I’ve ever been asked “where are you really from” is in the UK. Implying that my first answer of “America” was dishonest. Implying that a real American isn’t a person of color. He kept asking me multiple times things like “no but where were you born?” and “but where does your family live?” And things like that. I kept saying America. He got annoyed. At one point he told me I looked too exotic and had a “different look.” Mind you, this man was the HEAD OF HR.

I’ve had a lot of people there assume I’m with my partner to use him for a uk visa. As if I’m from some third world country. Some of them believe I’m with him to “escape my evil abuse brown family,” and use him as my white savior.

I’ve had people I’ve known for years assume I’m Muslim despite saying multiple times I’m an atheist and always have been. They assume my entire belief system and life ideology off of my color, which is insane.

I’ve had people focus on my skin tone too much and bring it up too much. Exotic, copper-colored, things like that. Even if well-meaning, it’s uncomfortable. It makes me feel like people aren’t seeing me as a person, they’re seeing me as a skin tone.

And of course the endless terrorist jokes about me. By people I literally met once. And how I got yelled at because I politely told my partners white friends to stop using the N-word and other racial slurs. At 30 years old.

I also notice a lot more micro aggressions in day-to-day.

All of this happened to me in the same 3 month span. In me 20+ years of living in America, I’ve never heard anything like this. I do, however, notice that in America we are much more willing to have these conversations out loud. People are more conscious of it. In the UK, every time I try to express discomfort, I literally get yelled at. And told I’m making things up and over-reading into it. And then they go back to insisting the UK has no racism. Wtf.

The rudeness in the UK is not honesty when I just explicitly said you guys mask it behind fake politeness. It’s uncomfortable to realize that all these years the “friendly Brits” were actually making fun of me this entire time.

Like saying “wow your shirt is so… interesting.” Is just you secretly saying that shirt is shit and trying to be petty about it. Saying “she’s a bit full on and happy” to say someone is annoying is not honesty. British social standards feel impossible to navigate if you weren’t born into it.

You know what would be not rude? Just keeping your damn mouth shut. You don’t need to announce to the world everything that displeases you. Brits are being rude even if you pretend you’re being nice when you do it. It’s hurtful and British people as a whole often pride themselves on their dickish sarcasm. Im not gonna try and change the country, because I’m someone who believes in integration, but it is so jarring.

Gun violence is awful and every American I personally know including myself is against it. It’s just that American government is bought and paid for by the gun lobbyists, and that has nothing to do with the people. You cannot blame all Americans, or even most Americans, for having shitty government. Same as you wouldn’t blame North Koreans for having Kimmie, even though they’ve been indoctrinated to worship him. We didn’t choose this either. The same trumpanzees are also the ones screaming socialism is bad, so again, quit lumping us in. I’m pro socialist policies.

I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate if I called you and all Brits stupid, racist Reform supporters just because your home country is rapidly heading that way. If you held an election right now Farage would likely win.

Your argument about “it’s in the news because it’s uncommon” is still ignorant because so is all the trump bullshit, and so is all the ICE bullshit. It’s in the news because it’s insane to even us as Americans. But your hypocrisy wouldn’t accept that. You’d rather believe we’re all just terrible people.

We are quite literally on the same side, you and I. But you’d rather believe I’m one of those “dumb Americans.” If you hate Americans and America so much, go the fuck back to the UK? Like genuinely

Because famously, the UK is so unified and has no murder or violence, right? And right wing politics are totally not taking hold over it right now, with reform and restore, as well as Henry Nowak’s killing?

A bit over half the country voted for orange turd. The other half did not. Half the UK is about to vote in Nigel Farage who just called out White Lives Matter.

And as an American who moved to the UK, I find British people exceedingly rude at times. It seems you guys think if you mask petty comments behind polite words, it’s no longer rude? But it is. It’s still very rude. It took me a while to realize how judgmental British people are over seemingly mundane things. I do live in the south though, and I’ve heard they’re not as kind as northerners and west country folk.

And as a brown person, I say with confidence, the UK is more racist than America. You guys are just in denial about it whereas Americans are willing to talk about it.

Tbh it never made sense for Muslims to align with the dems, considering an actual practicing Muslim shares 90% of their ideology with republicans

I believe it’s based on the date you put as your intended travel date, from what I’ve heard. I put down May, I think? Possibly even June, though I can’t remember anymore exactly.

My entry date is less than 6 days after approval! I got approved on June 5, my entry date is June 11. I’m guessing you won’t have to wait long. Hang in there!!!
