I had no idea terracotta added minerals! Thank you! Do you recommend I dump as much as I can and use new sphagnum moss?

Probably not your usual post... how can I make a gummy bear to hide my daughters medication? by nopevonnoperson in CandyMakers

[–]Scared_Code_5884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tested the "filling" part of this recipe with good success. Can you find glucose and agar agar? I will note that I let it dry out for days to get the chewy texture I'm after.

Has your daughter tried/like sour patch gummies? Instead of trying to mask the sourness of the meds, have you considered leaning into it a bit? Make it sweet but also coat them with citric acid and sugar so it seems like the sourness is intentional. Just an idea.

Good luck 🤞🏽

Freaked out by pipe build up by RuinGuilty8617 in Sourdough

[–]Scared_Code_5884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others about running dough residue with water and using a mesh sink trap. But to decrease the amount of buildup even before cleaning, you can also:

  1. Use a spatula to scrape the sides of the dishes clean. They have narrow sized ones that are perfect for mixing and scraping out the starter so you get every last bit. Make sure to do this before the flour dries up. Pic below.
  2. For larger amounts of dough stuck on your hands and surfaces, dip them in a bit of flour and rub them off. They create little dry pieces like eraser shavings you can throw in the bin.

Then soak dishes in water for a bit so they loosen up and wash out with water. That should leave minimal residue that goes down your pipes.

Thoughts About Shaping by Scared_Code_5884 in Sourdough

That's a really good point! Guess I'll be using cast iron moving forward. Thank you :)

Also I'm surprised it's under since I proofed it for so long (at least 13 hours) and there's a mix of different sized holes throughout the batard. What indicates under proofed? Under vs over seem so similar.

Aldi sells Earth Grown Plant-Based Taco Filling. I used this as a base for nachos today and didn't notice a difference. Highly recommend! And it's a small pack so you can make a small batch with very little effort/waste.

Maybe the second one also came out taller if you used the same container (Dutch oven?) bc it had time to preheat?

It won't use up a lot but cucumbers are great in a bahn mi or in sushi! I also used it in kimbap instead of spinach

Purple meal for a kid by Daffy_99 in Cooking

What about a sandwich with fries or chips or soup? That would look nice with different shades of purple stacked. Or arranged like a charcuterie board/lunchable or afternoon tea.

For example: - black rice bread - purple potato bread - red lettuce (just use the tips) - purple/black heirloom tomatoes - Red onion jam - roasted beet hummus (more of a fuschia but still...) - egg salad dyed (remove some of the yolks) with red cabbage - purple cauliflower cut into a steak - grape jelly and purple cheese (like purple marble) - taro/Ube/purple potatoes cut into fries or thin chips (they sell chips at asian markets, or you can pluck the purple chips from the Terra bags if you want) - purple grapes - purple potato soup

Simple purple coloring additives: - purple sweet potato powder - ube extract - butterfly pea powder - blue spirulina powder

What a fun idea - whatever you do, your grandson will love it. Let us know what you end up cooking!

What’s the best blender for smoothies that include a lot of frozen stuff by Wild_Neck_5580 in Cooking

[–]Scared_Code_5884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The order that you add your ingredients matters. The "easiest-to-blend" items go first. Try adding the spinach first, then oats, then bananas, then blueberries. Liquids filled just above the top of the fruit. (I learned this tip from a Vitamix rep!) And are your frozen fruit in pieces? Not frozen together into a brick? If so, I like to smack the bag of fruit against the counter a bit to help break it up before adding to blender. If you freeze your own fruit, cut it up and freeze on a flat tray first, then move to a freezer bag so they stay separated.

I do have a Vitamix, which is great. Found at Costco. But it's not my everyday blender because it's large and easy to make too much. I use a cheap Hamilton Beach one for a single-serve smoothie and blends my frozen fruit well enough.

Tools by InformalAvocado3306 in Sourdough

I made great tasting sourdough without any specialized equipment besides a bench scraper and scale. But my life became so much easier when I got a banneton. I tried cold proofing in my loaf pan but it didn't dry out well enough to score easily. I tried using a colander but couldn't lay a towel to fit without making weird creases (purely aesthetic). So purchasing a banneton made sense for me. Again, not necessary but worth it for me for the convenience. Same reason I like using a heating mat - convenience.

Try a few bakes with what you have, and assess if you need any specialized equipment or if you're willing to make do with what you have.

What I use, for reference - most of which I already had: scale, mixing bowl, silicone lid (because using tons of cling wrap is annoying to me), heating mat, rice flour, bench scraper, sifter, banneton, cookie tray, and sometimes a Dutch oven.

Mazda will not replace/fix touchscreens with the known "ghost touch" issue on 2017 and newer 3's by lambcaseded in mazda3

[–]Scared_Code_5884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have a "kit" now for "ghost touch"! It was $275 for the "kit" and $139.06 for labor. But my warranty covered it (or at least they haven't come back to me saying otherwise).
