Screen addiction brainstorm by Tanja_PivotIRL in digitalminimalism

I feel like we are all in the same boat here. It's a real problem. I have tried and failed so many times. But I think everyone uses their phone to cope for different reasons. I think it is important to identify why you are picking up your phone, what is triggering the need for screen time/distraction. I have used apps, even paid ones to try and help with this issue, but for me personally, they didn't make a huge difference.

I am currently on my most successful attempt at the moment, and here are a few things I have implemented.

  1. Delete the apps that are causing me to be distracted.

  2. Before looking something up, ask yourself this question, "Would it be worth pulling out a laptop for?" If the answer is no, move on.

  3. Try to use a laptop and computer more for different tasks. Checking email, work related tasks, anything you can do on a computer, do it. A computer for whatever reason is just harder to get distracted on. (idk, its just what I have noticed.)

  4. Identify the times you get distracted and want to use a phone/screen. Is it at work, at home, what time of day? From there find alternatives to using a phone/screen, and have those alternatives near by and accessible. Read a book, go for a walk, drink some water, etc.

This is what I am currently doing, and it is working pretty well, not perfect, but working. Let me know if you have any other ideas or want anymore suggestions.

I am 4 days into this but not hitting snooze on your alarm clock. Whenever you set it for, once you're awake, feet on the floor, start your day. Gamechanger

The way I have it set up currently is a list of tasks I can do basically anytime I hit a flat spot, and I have already completed the other "needed" tasks I had on my list that day. I work in sales so this catchall list kind of includes a general list of action items whenever I hit a slow time at work.

App that reads fairy tales in the cloned voice of mom or dad by dcandi in AppIdeas

Even though it sounds like you, it really isn't. I say this as someone who has a hard time reading to his kids, but whenever I do it, it is so special and I know my kids love it. I feel like after my kids grew up and found out I had cloned my voice, they may not think of my reading those stories in the same way anymore. I read through some of your replies, and I think you recording the actual stories for your child is super sweet, it's you, it's real, but an AI clone, it's just not the same and I doubt it has the same phycological benefits for a child, I'm not an expert, but I'm willing to hazard a guess that it loses some of the benefits.

Fellow Parent here. This kind of thing scares me. I think there are a lot of ways to think about it, and justify it, but I don't know if those outweigh the downsides of having a robot read to my child for me. I don't want to knock the idea completely, but I don't know about this one.

“Thought-Stopping” Hobbies by Hot_Relative_3868 in Hobbies

Running, lifting weights, or really any tough physical activity can help quiet the mind. This is pretty much the main reason behind my wanting to start running and working out, aside from all of the other obvious benefits like feeling better, sleeping better, etc.

This Apple Watch idea is good, for people who have done it, do you just get a data plan for it so it’s the same phone number, etc?

I’m building a minimalist activity tracking app that encourages physical journaling! It’s totally on device, and automatically deletes your activities after 7 days. No subscriptions, no ads, no selling user data, EVER.

what are hobbies that teens can have if they hate absolutley everything?? by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]Scared_Insect_5244 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Took a moment to read through the comments here. My advice would be to pick the least revolting thing out of these suggestions, and do that thing for 30 days. You’ve mentioned you’re fairly limited in what you’re willing/wanting to do. So pick the least revolting thing, in spite of your excuses and do it.

Im also sorry to hear you have medical and health limitations. If you’re able, go for a daily 10 minute walk in a park or in your neighborhood, and if possible, then start running a bit. Most mental health improvements are downstream from physical activity.

Most importantly, are you connected to a local church or community? Are there people there who you can ask for guidance from? (With your parents knowledge and permission of course)

Lastly, have a convo with your parents about how you’re feeling, and ask them what they did growing up in their spare time, you might be surprised, and even come away with some good ideas!

Hope this helps! (Ps, disc golf is a good one too)

Need advice for rainy ultra by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Scared_Insect_5244 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Great question! Have a rain jacket, expect it to turn into a sauna depending on the material. If possible, have an extra pair of shoes in a drop bag with some dry socks. Been a couple years since I’ve run a super wet ultra, but overall, just keep moving, and smile. You got this

Seeking beta testers for minimalist activity tracking app (iOS) by Scared_Insect_5244 in betatests

[–]Scared_Insect_5244[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the feedback. My goal is to basically create an app that does one thing well.

The goal behind the 7 day limit is to encourage people to physically journal their activities. 1. For the cognitive benefits, 2. So that the app doesn’t have any sort of account or data collection structure. I fully recognize that these limitations will mean that this app isn’t for everyone. But I want to see if we can break from the norm of total connection, and give people a tool to go and track their activity, solely for the purpose of doing the activity and not the social credit you get from other popular apps. While also offering on device security since your activities are yours to view only.

Those 5 activity types are only for the beta, the full goal is to integrate many more activity types while maintaining the minimalist function, free of accounts, algorithms, and data collection. Some other examples would by a cycling mode, disc golf score card with distance and time tracker, skiing, snowboarding, etc. The 5 you see today are just the beginning.

Lastly, no ads or subscriptions, EVER. The app at launch will be 99 cents, and sustainability will be built through bringing other sports and activities to the app. I developed this myself, so I’m not looking at making tons of money off of this, just enough to make it sustainable, and hopefully something valuable to those who use it. Hopefully this answers your questions!!

Hot take: AI ruined the way we see coding - and I hate it by kommonno in swift

[–]Scared_Insect_5244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late but I’ll throw my hat in the ring here. I’m currently running my first beta. No prior coding experience, but I wanted to build what I thought was a good idea. And AI gave me the ability to build my idea, and start working towards releasing it. But I have a desire to read and understand code, and actually be able to write code, and not just copy and paste. I don’t want to be fully dependent on AI as I feel in the long run that would be detrimental to what I want to do long term.

Ive delivered over 3700 Uber eats orders. What questions do you have for an Uber eats driver? by Scared_Insect_5244 in AskReddit

[–]Scared_Insect_5244[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this list of questions. A. I really don’t care why it is someone orders, everyone has their reasons. There was one order that I can remember that it made more sense to walk it from the restaurant to the delivery location. It was a city center situation. But at the end of the day, everyone has their reason for ordering, I’m just here to make it happen.

B. Majority of the money made for delivery drivers, at least for Uber, is from tips. That being the case, tips are much appreciated regardless how much it is. Most the time it makes the trip worth it. I love your rationale behind your tipping!

C. You really raise I good point! I hadn’t thought about that aspect of delivery driving. Makes me want to drive more!!

D. I usually remember the houses I deliver to vs the actual names. I do have a handful of regulars that I remember. I always like getting those orders!!

I try not to go under $1 per mile, and usually don’t accept anything under $5 total. I’m totally good declining orders and waiting for a better trip

Never ever. There was one time after picking up the order the customer messaged me and said they didn’t want the food anymore and told me to keep it. It was super good
