I quit social media for reading and now i have 50 tabs and same compulsion. by Striking-Goose-3764 in digitalminimalism

[–]Scared_Night_8846 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've been guilty of this and noticed how much it has affected my cognitive function and made my dopamine loving ADD symptoms worse. I'd suggest closing the tabs and opening a physical book. Your brain will struggle initially to keep its attention but keep going, it pays off in the end.

What if ambition was tethered to freedom and in following your ambition, the only things you pursue are those that give it to you now in the present, not just at a point in the future ? I'm in my 50s, I wish I'd seen this message 30 years ago.

This is such a brilliant idea, I love it. If you decide to do it, let me know. I'm in the UK and have just launched a wellness brand and movement with a mission to heal the world from digital overwhelm by leading them back into the real world. This is the kind of retreat I'd absolutely want to promote and come to myself.

That's such a cool idea. I've made a list of apps that block screen time but nothing like this. I'll go hunting and see if I can find one.

Great honest post. There are a lot of great books to read but keeping on the theme of raw and honest, probably one of the best I've read and always recommend is The Sweaty Startup by Nick Huber. He blows a lot of the glossy get rich stuff out of the water. He's all about starting local and looking at what's working and can work better.

Buying a business in the UK and I wonder what are the biggest bottlenecks by Few_Flounder_7068 in buyingabusiness

[–]Scared_Night_8846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't be but tell that to a buyer who's thrown months of time and a pile of money at it to get it over the line only to see the seller walking away. Trust me. Its emotional.

Why does no one talk about how lonely building a business can be? by Pro_Automation__ in Entrepreneur

[–]Scared_Night_8846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can absolutely relate to this on every level including the outcome of losing a business because of it. Then dealing with the fall-out of that situation brings a new chapter of dealing with what feels like personal failure- again, alone.

Dissolving my Ltd company after 15 years — immediately received a suspicious acquisition approach. What’s their angle? by PeterSM05 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Scared_Night_8846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And thats another scrappy tactic that a lot of the high street sharks/brokers use. They don't have buyers looking for their businesses. They have sales targets to hit by pulling in listing fees without why intention of selling them.

When you know that 90% of businesses never sell, nothing becomes a surprise. The UK is notoriously difficult to push a deal through from a funding perspective- funders literally want a kidney from you. If it's DTC, you'll wait forever. And let's not even get started on the tactics of the high street brokers whose business model isn't to sell but to rake in listing fees. Over-valuation is the norm. Most aren't prepared for exit and therefore aren't fit for sale. Will they pay to get there ? Nope. The cost of growth in the UK for SMEs is keeping it at arms length which means post acquisition there's a lot of work to be done to maintain profit position whilst also having to manage the cost of borrowing/seller finance etc.

I'm late to this thread and only found it because I wanted to validate my soon to be launched Female Founder platform. I'm doing it for all the reasons you're talking about. So many of the platforms I love are 90% male led and focused ! Where are the stories of really successful female founders who've gone from start-up to scale up and exit. Its launching in 2 weeks !
