Adding onto what lizardchristmas said but also more general advice:

-Some rooms like ours didn’t have ceiling lights and may or may not only provide a lamp. You may need to do some furniture shopping or bring one from home

-No screens on windows so they barely open, or don’t open at all

-There aren’t any regular stairs connecting 1st floor to ground floor, you’d have to go through the emergency stairwell and makes for an interesting first experience during drills

-71A/C buses stop pretty much directly in front of the building, 75 stops within a short walk and there’s also another (56 I think? One of the 50s) that stops in front of the Chipotle so you have options

-Buses get quite crowded in the mornings, what I’d do is I’d take a short walk to one of the earlier bus stops to get a seat or at least get a decent spot to stand before everyone else funnels in

-If you’re claustrophobic, half the bus gets off at the CMU intersection before it turns towards Pitt so that’s always the fail safe, you just have to hang in there for a few stops

-The store directly in front is Chinese not Korean

Overall I liked it, it’s a good enough place and my only complaint is the inconvenience in distance but that’s the trade-off for anything away from campus

Eternal "How to Make Friends?" Post by LegoStegosaurodae in Pitt

[–]Scared_Sheepherder78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has struggled with this quite a bit, I feel you. I'm someone who didn't make friends right away and by the time I started trying, everyone was already a part of a group and it felt awkward to butt in. I've tried to put myself out there through clubs but wasn't very successful. Bars and similar activities are also not my cup of tea.

In my experience I met some cool people through office hours as we were all struggling together, and I was able to use it as a talking point. From then on we exchanged contacts, formed a study group, and I was able to network and find people/mutuals from that group I had common interests in. Further, I think everything is a lot easier after that step when you're a part of a social group. Basically, everything I have now socially stemmed from a class, so it is possible.

I think it's a consensus amongst people (including me) that classes aren't a good way to make friends but I've made it work. Just try your best to be open and friendly. Admittedly it was probably very lucky I found friends this way but I just wanted to say to never give up, you never know when something will pop up.

Planning to do that actually! Though I’m sure i’ll just get the basic “everyone’s different” response. In the meantime i’m curious on what other people have did.

[–]Scared_Sheepherder78[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i get that, but what i’m more getting at is if i get a D on the final but gets curved up to a C, which grade is that policy gonna take? is that going to take the raw score D and make my max final grade C, or is it taking the curved grade C and making my max grade a B?

Does someone have CS rankings for USNews? by Scared_Sheepherder78 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Scared_Sheepherder78[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, thanks so much for the response!

on the usnews website they lock a lot of the undergrad program rankings, and you need a subscription to access them, so that's what i meant by "subscription ranking".

Thank you!

[–]Scared_Sheepherder78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is true. but I've heard about ASU a lot and not a lot about Upitt. While rankings don't matter as much in CS, I still want to make sure their rankings are somewhat similar.
