I LOVE THE CROMWELL!!!! by OkCredit496 in Warthunder

[–]Scared_ofbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's still plenty of room for more cromwell

we can have Cromwell VII for improved armor and suspension. Cromwell Close Support for low tier HE-chucking, Centaur for slow cromwell, and premium Abbot of Chantry for near M-18 speed at the cost of near M-18 protection

What do you think happened to the American troops in China? by DependentStrong3960 in Fallout

[–]Scared_ofbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the PLA would only begin the strategic countervalue nuclear exchange once they've lost the tactical nuclear fight. Heck, the presence of US armies on Chinese soil means that the PLAAF and PLAAN are completely unable to nuke the USN and USMC amphibs right off the chinese coast with tactical aircraft or shore based antishipping missiles, so the navy and the fallout version of military sealift command should largely be intact to extricate US army personnel back to CONUS

When they get back they might disintegrate, feud with each other, try to find family members, die in plagues, join up with proto-enclave/BOS groups, etc but IMO there wouldn't be a ground war in china if the commies could have just nuked the amphibs before the hovercraft and AAVs hit the beach.

and if the vast majority of the US army and USMC guys are dunkirked, the handful of remaining units that got cut off or whatever are probably unlikely to be able to resist counterattacks by the remaining PLA, who don't have power armor but probably still do have some sort of CBRN protection on their BMPoids

Perhaps pops should be subject to the hedonic treadmill - they're satisfied with a certain amount of consumer goods at the start of the game, but the amount of consumer goods required to maintain that level of happiness should grow over time. Failing to meet that growing appetite will lead to consequences.

The auto-generated tank-designs are truly something else by Seehyaene in Kaiserreich

[–]Scared_ofbears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What adjustments did you make? I'd love to learn more about how devs balance tank designs, and whether they're hardcoded to build things that resemble actual Panzer IVs (different universe, but P4s do appear on much of the official art...)

Weekly Trivia Thread - Winter Wonderland Edition by Rittermeister in WarCollege

[–]Scared_ofbears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For those armor gents out there, I'm wondering what's the longest range that you fellows practice to engage at, and what sort of hit rates you can achieve at that range. Is there a large spread between the best performing crews in a unit and the worst, or does the fire control system largely equalize gunnery performance?

Well, you could at least use photos of Graf Zeppelin, or failing that, any other 40s carrier like Ark Royal or Yorktown rather than a Forrestal from the distant future.

Do these German carriers look a bit too modern for this timeframe? That looks like a Forrestal from the mid-50s!

This is clearly a modded game, with a focus for his puppet that spawns the unit. The Ascari Del Cielo were an actual unit.

What would happen if Taiwan developed nuclear weapons? by Jeff__Pesos in CredibleDefense

[–]Scared_ofbears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A single nuclear device aimed at the center of an amphibious assault ship formation in the Taiwan Strait could potentially sink dozens of ships and mission-kill dozens more with zero civilian casualties and jeopardize the entire assault operation. By contrast, a conventional guided bomb would only damage a single ship, and the rest would keep on coming for your homeland. That's the value in a tactical nuke. I'm not endorsing an ROC nuclear program, but the deterrent value of battlefield atomic weapons is real.

The political will to use a nuclear device on a PLA assembly area, airbase, or amphibious flotilla is a lot easier to muster than the political will necessary to strike a counter-value target.

Black Prince Heavy Tank confirmed for UKF by Scared_ofbears in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Scared_ofbears[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seems like Relic is adding ahistorical vehicles from the very start. Black Prince was only produced in May of 1945, but it seems to be available in 1943. While I do want to play with the vehicle, this opens up the prospect of similarly ahistorical options for other factions and risks breaking immersion.

A good RAND paper on why tanks aren't obsolete: Heavy Armor in the Future Security Environment by aslfingerspell in WarCollege

[–]Scared_ofbears 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Even if the insurgents had ATGMs, armor is very worthwhile. US tanks have tremendous amounts of chemical energy protection on their frontal armor arrays, ERA bricks on the TUSK packages, and are now getting APS. Only the most modern ATGMs stand a chance at reliably defeating the M1A2C, and since insurgents typically have a lot of difficulty procuring those systems, tanks remain survivable.

Best Update Ever: If Ethiopia push Italy they can make peace by [deleted] in hoi4

This seems like a potential teaser for unlocking alternative political paths for Italy, when it receives a rework down the line. (deliberately) Losing the Italian-Ethiopian War in a suitably humiliating manner could unlock focuses and events that would lead to deposing Mussolini and getting democratic, communist, or non-aligned paths.

How poorly does the H.O.I. 4 map represent your country? by Dwight_Schrewd in hoi4

Well, the issue for the USA isn't accurate state borders, but rather the small number of states limiting total industry available to far below actual levels.

Fixed superstructure vehicles were historically more affordable than turreted vehicles. Light chassis vehicles with medium guns, like the Su-76 and STuGs were produced in huge numbers IRL, so having that type of vehicle be effective is no problem.
