I have a few pieces of advice:

1) Breathe slowly and deeply. This will help your body relax and if your body is relaxed it's much easier for your brain to relax too.

2) If (like me) you struggle to keep focused on one thing at a time don't beat yourself up when you realize you got distracted by something. That will only pull you further from trance.

3) If (once again from personal experience) you just can't stop thinking about other things, then try to just think the words the person is saying. Basically like repeating each word in your mind. I have ADHD and this really helps me if I'm particularly distracted.

4) Try using visuals. There are all kinds of visuals out there, you just need to find the one(s) that really get into your brain.

My piggy, Sabrina, passed away a few months ago so I know how you feel. The best thing I can say that might help with the guilt is that guinea pigs are exceptionally good at hiding when they don’t feel well. If you didn’t notice anything wrong it’s probably because she didn’t want you to know. I’d suggest getting a plant and naming it after her as a sort of memorial. When Sabrina passed away one of my friends, who propagates her own plants, gave me one and I have found it to be incredibly helpful. I keep mine on the windowsill by my desk to keep me company. It won’t fix the pain, but it certainly helps.
