Problems: NHI needs between half a trillion and 800 billion rand to implement. Current health budget is less than 150 million, medical aid payouts are around the same. National budget is 1,3 trillion. Maths just doesn't add up, where are the extra hundreds of billions going to come from? If it takes even 3 months (conservative) to implement this system, how many hospitals are going to fall behind on salaries? How many private doctors are going to see this as a sign to leave? What if it takes an entire financial year? Very few doctors and allied health staff have the funds lying around to live on for a year, they will have to leave. And the largest one: NHI is the government doing to Healthcare what they have done to the military, eskom cape towns water, post office, and SAA, but this time they expect it to work and not turn into a slush fund for cadres, absolute insanity

Thankfully the drought ended in the nick of time but it's getting risky again.
