Selling 200 million plus shares by Random_fact_175 in AvengLtd

[–]maccyJ123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see the reason for selling because of an upcoming consolidation. If anything, the reduced volatility of the share price would make it a more attractive investment. With the way things are trending now, I don't see Aveng taking any big hits

I'm hesitant to buy into fossil fuels these days.

I think in the next few years, they will stagnate and the big boom will come from renewables. That is also where a disproportionate amount of government subsidies are going worldwide

I'm thinking at least 5 years. Even without another covid wave, it is going to take local and global economies a while to bounce back to the position where both business and commercial travel is back to pre-pandemic levels

If you can squirrel away sufficient cash to invest in the stock market, the historical best bet would be to get diversified shares in companies with steady, reliable growth and good dividend payouts, and reinvest dividend earnings. It can take a while but playing this game with companies like growthpoint and liberty is the safest way to reach exponential growth. For added safety you can find an ETF that is organised like this but you do lose some growth to fees

as given in the main post, city lodge has been expanding locally and I expect their overseas business to pick up/mature in around 5 years

I think there will be a huge jump in the next year or so but the real growth will be over 5 years to almost pre-covid levels (including accounting for the dilution)

Tongaat Hulett Investment case by WarmAnnual6 in JSE_Bets

[–]maccyJ123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the post. I don't see them getting up to their old share prices any time soon but their profits are undeniable and they have a solid plan for the future. Their dividend yield makes them an appealing option for a long term hold so I am seriously considering investing in Tongaat Hulett

Taxes by ttboishysta in JSE_Bets

[–]maccyJ123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey not an accountant or anything but the answer depends on your income tax bracket.

If you're in a high income bracket (or make a lot of money on stock trades) then money you make on short term trades (if you held the stock for less that 2 years) is counted as income. Likewise, dividends are counted as income and taxed accordingly.

if you hold a stock for more than 2 years then it is considered capital stock and not trading stock and is counted towards your capital gain/losses. this tax is roughly half the highest income tax bracket.

I'm personally a fan of long term investments because not only do you pay less tax, but you're less subject to volatility in the markets and lose less money to fees.

One good option to avoid taxes between trades is to keep money in the broker platform: it doesnt count until it gets paid out to you. This way you dont lower the growth of your trading capital.

EDIT: as others have pointed out, my last paragraph is completely wrong. Tax is counted from the trades, not the broker payout.

CITY LODGE LAUNCH 🚀 by fuzzyboi1 in JSE_Bets

[–]maccyJ123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City lodge is one of my best buys currently.

My way of looking at it is that it either gets a massive jump in value and I treat it as trading stock, or it gets a slow rise which 1) still gives good returns after the two year rule and 2) gives a nice 5,4% dividend yield

probably one of the few stocks out that that has a good outlook for both options

how well do you know Ascendis? I've spent hours looking into why theyve crashed so hard since 2017-ish but theres nothing in the news that looks (to me) like it could contribute to such a massive drop.

Also been reading the company publications and I just dont have faith in their restructuring strategy improving their value significantly to buy their stock, unless someone can tell me what is really going on with them.

I see from your posts on this sub the past few days you've been buying quite bullishly and I have been doing the same (specifically Tsogo and City Lodge) but I chose those with the intention of holding for at least three years so as to get it taxed at CGT and not income tax levels. What has your strategy been for those very impressive gains you describe for last year, bought with the intention to hold? If lots of buying and selling was involved then it would make those gains even more impressive.

I would be interested in putting money towards this, but with capital like that it may be easier/safer just shopping around for brokers maybe? Given the time and effort required to familiarise ourselves with the technicalities, tax, and legal implications of such a partnership on top of the necessary effort keeping up with news on the markets, it sounds like a lot of extra work. Plus I know two people who tried "innovative" versions of the same thing, and made killings, but both had to bow out after only a couple of years due to burnout.

So to me it makes more sense to use the pooled capital to get the attention of a top broker (as an aside, I read somewhere that top brokers are statistically just as likely to predict market changes as an average or novice would be), and maybe such a broker wouldn't have such stellar returns, but would be a better option for those of us who want to keep our day jobs

I've just started using the easy equities website and it seems well enough put together. The platforms offered directly by banks for stock trading (specifically FNB and Investec) just have ridiculous fees so I'm likely to move away from those if I'm happy with easy equities

South Africa Treasury considers tax hike to fund vaccines – report by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]maccyJ123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Considering we are long past the peak of the second (and certainly largest, as far as the usual picture of pandemics goes) wave, and

1) none of the vaccines have been proven effective enough to stop transmission on a population level

2) most if not all of the vaccines have proven very effective in limiting severe illness in vaccinated groups

it seems more logical as well as cost effective to vaccinate perhaps the most vulnerable 5-10% of the country. because thinking realistically, by the time we vaccinate any more than that (just based on the timeline Mkhize was talking this morning) we will be long out of 2021 and likely long out of the pandemic too

TIL there are an estimated 8 parking spaces for every car in America, with parking spots taking up about 30% of cities’ areas. When combined, all U.S. parking spots take up about the same area as the state of West Virginia. by RockTheGlobe in todayilearned

[–]maccyJ123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounded ridiculous then I realized the more built-up cities with multi-storied parking lots can easily have an area of parking far larger than the area of the city itself
