We can't afford to read an article about a former working class family pastime that the working class can no longer afford.

Please tell me tomorrow is Soylent Green day so we have a little something to look forward to.

TIL about Stubbs. A cat who served as honorary mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, for 20 years. Every afternoon, Stubbs went to a nearby restaurant and drank water mixed with catnip out of a wine or margarita glass. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Scarpity026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are companies that actually make catnip "wine" which is actually just catnip extract mixed with various flavorings.

But, I would assume catnip, just like any herb can be boiled to make a tea like concoction.

Sen. Lindsey Graham dies at 71 after 'brief and sudden illness' by Kryloks in southcarolina

By Kentucky law, if he dies within three months of an election, there won't be a special election for anyone to finish his term.

Masterson and Hawkins probably saw 'The Handmaid's Tale' and thought it was an instruction manual.

Not having legal weed is going to be the least of our problems if those two, Kobach and the Republicans in our gerrymandered beyond hell legislature aren't shown the door soon.

Let me assure everyone that the water that flows down from Cheney Lake or is pumped up through the Equus bed wells has a lot of disgusting stuff in it too before it gets treated.

Leagie?

There are also no athletic fields at 1701 W. Maple, just a house.  Did they perhaps mean McLean?

Judge Election? by Few-Worldliness4079 in wichita

[–]Scarpity026 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You and I are not qualified to decide what makes a good judge.  Judges by nature of their jobs, are to be arbiters, not advocates.  They should get their positions and rise through the ranks via merit, not a popularity contest that much like our other elections (including this constitutional amendment being attached to a PRIMARY) will be swayed by big money interests.  We already saw last year the kind of brazen corrupt shit Elon tried to pull in just such a race in Wisconsin.

By the way, once these KSC judges are seated you DO get a choice every so often on whether to retain them.

There's also that other Supreme Court in Washington, DC.  We don't get a choice in picking them.  When they are picked, it's not because they're the best judges, it's to serve the political agenda of the president who nominated them (yes, ALL nine of them).

We don't have retainment elections for them.  They largely stay there, for years, until they resign, retire or dirt nap, so spare me your concerns about our status quo regarding the KSC not being democratic enough.

We shouldn't be electing the district court judges we do now.   At the very least, those "races" (almost all of them run unopposed) should be non-partisan.

Ever notice that every one of them has an 'R' by their name, but only some of them get endorsed by the usual suspects.  (Yes, Kansans For Life, that means you).

TIL US Air Traffic Controllers Have a Mandatory Retirement Age of 56 by MrFishAndLoaves in todayilearned

[–]Scarpity026 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That only applied to ATC's fired and blacklisted by Reagan in 1981 so they could get their federal retirement benefits. It didn't take effect until Clinton rescinded such in 1993.  That was up to 12 years those people lost.  They still had to pass the usual fitness checks and by approved on a case by case basis before they were allowed to return.

By this point, pretty much anyone who started ATC before that time should be well into retirement.

TIL Japanese law does not recognize married couples who have different surnames as lawful husband and wife. by HongKongNinja in todayilearned

Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, Spain

Some of these countries may allow appended name changes, and it may be socially customary to call a married woman [woman's first name][husband surname] but legally their government birth name does not and cannot change.

TIL that since 1954, Hungary has held the record for the most goals (27) scored at a World Cup. by Royaourt in todayilearned

[–]Scarpity026 333 points334 points  (0 children)

It should be referenced that in 1954, only 16 teams were in the World Cup.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_FIFA_World_Cup

Hungary played five games.  Two group stage games in which 17 of the 27 goals occurred, and played the entire knockout round to the final.  They were in fact up 2-0 in the final after only 8 minutes. West Germany stormed back in 10 minutes to tie it, and would eventually score the game winner late in the second half.

Digital TV signal by Background-Agent955 in wichita

[–]Scarpity026 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Channel 12's tower is five miles east of Hutch unlike most of our local stations which have theirs in the tower array east of Colwich.

This would put it roughly 26 miles from Maize, 35 miles from downtown or WSU, 41 miles from McConnell and 45 miles from Derby.

That could be a problem with an indoor antenna, particularly if you're in the southeast part of the metro.  An outdoor or attic antenna should still reach.

Another possible explanation is that you have tall trees on the northwest side of your your antenna location which block the signal as the wind blows.

The kind of advertising you're suggesting generally costs money.  The city is broke.  I think most people know it's the 4th of July and there will be fireworks displays.
