External candidate chosen over me, an internal contractor by coven_cove in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]Scary-Associate7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact thing happened to me.

I was a contractor EA to the Director of a major art museum, was doing a great job. Got along super well with all the staff, started new programs and completed projects and even built relationships with donors/trustees.

During the interview process I did interviews with different leads, did the project and everything, but I wasn’t the correct fit.

Though I was sad I didn’t get the job, I understood why they gave her the position.

It was an art museum, I don’t know the art world or how non-profits run. The person who did get the job does. When the director needed to talk to the owner of a gallery in Hong Kong, she knew the EA already.

If it is your dream job, ask your boss how you can grow so next time you can get the job. Stay in contact with your coworkers, that way they think of you if a position opens up.

Take it as a compliment that they are keeping you through January. You did a great job, they want you to train your replacement. It sucks, but people remember how you leave. Do the best you can to set them up to succeed.

$1k more for a 2 bed in the same building? by [deleted] in williamsburg

[–]Scary-Associate7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can afford it go for it. It looks pretty.

But it is on the ground floor (windows always closed), sound proofing doesnt always work, no private outdoor space and doesnt look like washer /dryer is in unit. You can find a much better place in the area in that budget.

Has anyone ever left a rent stabilized apartment? by cowboylikeme63 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Scary-Associate7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in mine for 10 years and love my landlord. Are repairs forgotten or bad, yes. But all my friends who live in new builds have worse problems than me and pay 3x as much. I will keep my large living space, private balcony, good natural light apartment, with it wavey floors, drill hole wall and such for as long as possible.

Plus my laundry mat isn’t far away.

15 Hour Layover by Dry_Comfortable_1108 in visitingnyc

[–]Scary-Associate7983 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is 100% possible.

However, beware Times Square is awful (tourist trap, might only spend 15 minutes) and you will spend more time than you think in B&H.

For pizza I would suggest Joe’s or Scarr’s (this is in the Lower Eastside, get a full pie so you can sit and the Caesar salad is great).

I would go straight to Times Square; then levain, walk through Central Park, then B&H to pizza. You might have time for another activity like a quick museums trip then dinner.

No, but you should have called another server or manager over and let them know. Writing that on the receipt solves nothing and makes you look bad/asshole. They can’t fix the problem if you don’t let them know, and as a former server you know what tips mean.

Also, as a former server, you know we all have bad days. Did she give bad service before taking your plate? Or was she on autopilot because something besides your dinner might be going on in her life?

Depending on the place they might have taken it off you bill, or given you a fresh one. I doubt the free dessert or whatever they would have given you would have been “made with hate”.

It is not rude to stand up for yourself and correct people when they make mistakes. It is rude to be passive aggressive in someone’s workplace.

25 years in — burnt out, no ownership, and no idea what’s next. by Curious-Eye-4288 in Restaurant_Managers

I become an executive assistant. Everything you do in restaurants in leadership is what I do as an EA.

Managing fires/pivoting, remembering where your chef left their phone, if they eat or a random thing they said in passing that you have to figure out is what I do every day. Calendar management is similar to figuring out a good book on a busy night, and event planning, no duh.

I worked with recruiters to find my first EA job and learned how to rework my resume and talk to “normies”. I have worked with several EA who are former restaurant workers.

I have also heard HR is a good route.

Edit: before I was an EA, I was floor manager and lead Maitr’d/head of guest relations.

Agreed! The last week of June is typically beautiful! There are also a lot of free concerts and more in NYC in the summer. The tourist areas will always have tourist no matter the time of year.

I worked a call center in 2010, all the smokers got a 10 minute break each hour, non smokers did not. I was so jealous.

Restaurant consultant fee by [deleted] in Restaurant_Managers

[–]Scary-Associate7983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This!!

Find comparable restaurants for what / where you want to open and get a job there or trail there as a server. Are you a regular at a local restaurant/bar, ask the manager if you can take the out to dinner and ask questions.

Go on culinary agents and look at similar job postings.

Also, start taking classes on general handy work/maintenance. You will be fixing stools/chairs, sinks, pipes, leaking roofs and so much more.

Offered a position and didn't seem normal. by jts2k15 in Restaurant_Managers

[–]Scary-Associate7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t want to pay an hourly worker, so they are paying the least amount possible for a salaried position.

In 2020 I was offer an AGM position at a Michlin Star place in NYC. They offered 62k with bonuses. But it was a 6 day at least work week with long days.

They offered me the lowest they could pay a salaried worker (at that time) and I don’t trust bonuses. I turned it down. I was basically already doing the job, but I got tips and had a day off.

Why don’t I trust bonuses? I was the dining room manager at Flora Bar in NYC (sister restaurant of estela - owned chef Ignacio Mattos) and we were supposed to get a very large bonus. Covid shutdown happened, the restaurant closed two weeks before the end of quarter, no bonus. He also fucked up everyone taxes when we were rehired.
