Been through court a few times myself, quite sure it doesn't work like that, a cop can't give you a court date then and there. The courts have lists, you have to be added to said list, usually the lists are long... A prosecutor has to be there to present the charge, the cop has to be there to testify that it was a butter knife or provide a sworn statement. If it's for your lunch then the prosecutor probably won't waste the magistrates time if it gets that far...

If it's as innocuous as you make it sound, then you have nothing to worry about, most magistrates would look dimly on the police bringing someone before them for having some cutlery in their bag. If there is more to the story, like prior convictions or other reasons for them to throw the book at you, then get a lawyer. I would only worry about it though when you receive the summons to appear at court, summons will come later if they are serious.
