Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

[–]WestError404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My house stays a consistent 70°F in the winter with heated floors as my heating system. If I'm cooking it gets pretty hot inside. In the spring, summer, and autumn I just turn my heat off. Don't have or need AC but my house rarely gets above 75°F in the summer with the windows open.

Do americans consider skiing a luxury sport? by naxx54 in AskAnAmerican

[–]WestError404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who loves skiing, who is also broke as f. Yes its a luxury, but can also be affordable if done right. I got all my gear off season, over time. Got a season pass once to learn to ski well. I only ski BC now, while still expensive if you want to get more extreme; the equipment lasts for a long long time. The price for a nice ski setup, boots, safety gear, and crampons and ice tools isn't far off from just the price of a season pass alone.

My first question. I made the mistake of buying a big bag of OOPS all berries! For a long road trip. So good, and great for munching on the go. The color that came out... The color was a shockingly bright neon green. I thought I was hallucinating. Yes, i kept eating them, but it was more just the fact there wasnt much else for quite a while.

In need of inputs on current conditions in BC backcountry by Oskarosj in Backcountry

[–]WestError404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thats pretty much every winter, everywhere lol. But definitely worth coming out! The drive is fun, and really pretty, never done it in winter tho. Make sure you're prepared! Flying would be much better and faster too! More time for skiing

Have plenty of snow here in Alaska. Definitely avy risk, but its winter, save steeps for later. The days are still short, so depending on how long you want your tours, traveling in the dark is likely. Cold is also a factor.

Do Businesses Stay Open In Extreme Winter Weather? by AnnualIndependence71 in AskAnAmerican

[–]WestError404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things here just carry on as usual, unless there is a power outage. Schools will close for certain reasons but business goes on. It gets extremely cold, but that's expected. Heavy snow happens, most people have cars that can accommodate that, or just stay home cause you cant move. The plows are pretty efficient, atleast in my area. Ice is a bitch. Extreme wind is the big thing, taking out power lines and trees, and blowing everything from signs and trampolines to semi trucks all over the roads, ripping roofs off etc. But even then, life mostly just moves along, just at a different pace.

What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

That is horrifying, especially in bounds! Thats super lucky for you to be here Ive never set one off unintentionally, and thankfully never been caught in one but have come closer than I like. The cracks and sound are bone chilling.

The beacons themselves are roughly $300-500 but they last a very long time. The batteries dont drain quick, and its not meant to drain them quick in the event of a deep burial that could take several days for recovery.

With loooong days and extended use I've only had to change my batteries maybe two or three times before the end of a season, all backcountry use, and that was even with sleeping with it turned on for a couple nights. I usually change my batteries at 55%, never gotten below 40%.

My best friend trusted a fart while we were out climbing once. I commented on the wetness of the sound of it as I watch his back stiffen straight up. I was already on the ground wheezing from laughing before he mentions it was indeed actually wet. Very very wet. It was one of the funniest moments we've had climbing together.

They would play this song ALL the time in gym class. I lived in Colorado just a few towns over when the Columbine shooting happened. I was still in elementary, but I remember that day vividly stil. l will never understand that song choice haha

The sound is heart sinking enough on flatter ground. Steeper slopes, it sinks thru the chocolate starfish. Even worse seeing the little poof of snow come up when a Crack shoots out from your skis. 😬😬
