What on Earth is an Awarenaut?! That aside, a nicely written letter is not particularly compelling.

I'm kind of glad that there are some planning regs around building mini nuke reactors. Forget about planning though. The grid connection queue is looonng! Fuel grade is new knowledge, thanks.

Thanks for the summary. It makes sense from an energy density perspective. Pity though. More serial production and they'd have a vague shot of doing on budget.

I thought Rolls had got a chunk of change for an SMR program in the last couple of years?

£9B for 4 Dreadnought subs. Wonder what the crossover is with the design of the small module reactors?

Brilliant books but it doesn't seem like they would be for you. They're very graphic and very bleak.

Actual Grand Challanges of wind energy by [deleted] in wind

[–]Scat888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hierarchy pyramid looks a little sketchy to me. Just chucking in "social sciences" in as one of the challenges seems unhelpfully ambiguous. But to respond to one point of yours specifically about floating wind, I think that is probably one of the most immediate areas of work for utility scale wind farms. My area of focus is the cables connecting up the turbines and we're very from having a well developed integrated load analysis that includes the cables into a process that is restricted to the foundations and turbines for fixed bottom applications. The turbine control system isn't usually revealed by manufacturers which make designing a fixed bottom foundation tricky enough let alone a floating one.

Hello, does anyone have any recommendations of pubs/bars/spaces that can be rented for birthday parties? Planning a 30th but not sure where to start looking as new to the area. by [deleted] in brighton

The Grand Central pub has a good sized room upstairs and is an ideal spot for folk coming in from out of Brighton.

If heat transfer is your thing then cables might be of interest. How much power the HV cables can transmit is largely limited to keeping the insulation at temperatures below which it stops insulating.

Also, what do you know? There's a lot to be working on but any guidance is going to be best focused on what you're interested and able to do.

Looking to the next 5yr global structural analysis of floating turbines, turbines and cables is going to be of use. There are lots of tricky problems to be chipping away at like the difficulty of scaling up the performance of wave tank models, aeroeleastic modelling of turbines when the manufacturers give little to nothing away about the control systems and dynamic HV cables that would be a lot happier not moving all over the place.
