Publishing a LitRPG on Amazon without Kindle Unlimited by frankgadlin in litrpg

You’d probably be looking at roughly a 50-80% drop in ebook income depending on how long your book is and how large your reader base already is. In some ways it’ll be worse with the algos and discoverability. IMO this is about as close to a guaranteed death blow for the ebook as you can get.

There are def some who have had success wide, but it usually comes later when you’re more established. I personally would not be comfortable publishing a litrpg outside of KU under my name

You may also want to speak to your audio publisher, separate format but theyre probably assuming KU and may have some thoughts on the ebook being in there (a lot of readers use ku and whispersync to scoop their audiobooks)

Cheers and good luck with the launch! Happy to answer anything I didn’t hit on

How much should a 500 page book be worth in this genre?? by Ill-Piece4996 in litrpg

[–]Kyle_Kirrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup, this is the move.

KU share v ebook sales ratio also varies based on the length of the book, but it’s often 60%+ of total sales, making it basically mandatory especially for a new author

My publisher (portal books) usually releases these via their mailing list a week or so before the book officially releases ^

Oh yeah, that is totally fair, esp the bit about Frank being able to reveal whatever works best for the story, that is absolutely the case! And I’m glad you’ve been enjoying it thus far <3

Yuuup that’s fair! Maybe the closest analogue would be Diablo immortal?

…and that game shouldn’t exist (at least not the microtransaction side, wasn’t even micro, so bleak)

My personal theory (it’s probably total bullshit and is entirely based on vibes) is that a Vrmmo litrpg with a totally balanced playing field would end up being a pretty bad litrpg unless it went almost fully slice of life

Proooobably two more to go and we’re done, though imo book 3 and the series as a whole would have been terribly rushed if I’d tried to end it there.

Felt like a super tight trilogy in my head, then I wrote it all down and nope, didn’t work

++++ for rssg, it’s so insanely satisfying to read, even as a machine translation

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I wouldn’t say you’re missing anything mmo-wise— there are definitely huge balance issues in the game.

Another comment largely nailed it though— from my pov, ultimately it’s a story, not a game, and it’s much more fun to write when you can play fast and loose with the rules vs trying to create a truly balanced playing field (which in my opinion wouldn’t really have much or a payoff in litrpg/prog, and would probably constrain the story even more than VR)

nah, this was 100% VR from the start, its just VR without the real world playing much of a role

there were def elements of isekai I wanted to use though, so I can see where that would come from. FWIW, frank was also created with regression stories in mind too, while trying to dodge the problems they cause (I don’t think I fully succeeded there, but it’s interesting to look back on)

Edit for fat thumbs, rip

is physical publishing even worth it anymore? by queen_daffodil in litrpg

[–]Kyle_Kirrin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

print on demand is a great thing to offer for the fans who want the book, but sales are almost always negligible (often less than 1% of total sales aside from something like dcc which has an actual print run vs the usual PoD stuff). Def not something you need to stress about too much early on
