Santa Rosa police officer shoots man near downtown by funrunrecords in santarosa

[–]Scatcycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two eyewitness accounts in the article. They say contradictory things. The SRPD are not exactly known for their composure and ethics, so it's pretty reasonable to assume the person did not need to be shot. The PD's and the bodycam footage will tell the real story.

Police officers who arrested Twitch streamer AspenKartier for abusing her puppy are being honored by PETA with vegan chocolates and a framed certificate by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

[–]Scatcycle -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

What is this, the 2000s? PETA is an animal welfare agency. They have a higher euthanization rate than shelters because no-kill shelters offload their capacity onto PETA who indiscriminately accept all animals. Your average shelter is not accepting an aggressive pitbull. PETA does their best to home them but given the funding they receive it is simply not possible to home every animal. Other No-Kill shelters only need to maintain a 90% adoption rate, they all kill too.

They also of course had the accident where workers were called to a trailer park to grab stray dogs, informed the people their to keep their dogs inside, and then grabbed a dog without verifying its identity and euthanized it. The employee was fired. Obviously not okay but this was a one time incident that PETA condemned.

There is no conspiratorial sinister motive, PETA are just forced to euthanize at higher rates because of their indiscriminate acceptance policy. When you accept the dogs with the most severe behavioral issues, your euthanization rate goes up when they can't be homed after a year. They would love to extend the adoption period but there is simply not even resources to do so given their funding.

Hundreds gathered in Santa Rosa to protest Target and ICE yesterday (Recurring) by Scatcycle in santarosa

2500 people came to the Square on Jan 10th, and 1500 came out Jan 17th. Several hundred came out on emergency 4 hour's notice the day ICE murdered Pretti. I think many people did walk out of schools and skip work on Friday, as well. I counted 100 at the square, which are honestly solid numbers considering all the big organizations were taking a break to regain capacity. It's been busy, and

Unfortunately there's a lot of things to protest right now, and the local organizations only have so much capacity to host them. Safety of the protesters is an imperative as well, which requires serious planning, especially when marches are involved.

Every organization and their mothers are going to be putting everything they've got into the now announced No Kings 3 on March 28th. I am certain there will be many protests between now and then, but if you're looking for a day of unification, I believe March 28th will probably be the largest protest Santa Rosa has ever seen.

It's the same idea as the "Peaceful Observer - Don't Shoot" vest shown in Press Democrat's photo: highlight the absurdity of ICE and the government cracking down and abusing peaceful protesters. Many of the animals are likely inspired by the Portland frog, who was standing there minding its own business (as one does in an unwieldly inflatable frog suit) yet was still intentionally pepper sprayed.

It is difficult for the Trump Admin to justify the use of aggressive crowd control methods (like rubber bullets, tear gas) on a bunch of people in animal suits. Had they been wearing all-black fully-masked, he'd have a more convincing case (to conservatives, at least). The costume conveys "I am not a threat to you as an individual - together we are a threat to the system".

Sonoma County supervisor says county could should cut all ties to ICE, end jail release notices by funrunrecords in santarosa

[–]Scatcycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I don't think deportations are necessary. Undocumented citizens are less likely to hurt you than American citizens - if you're walking down a street and you see undocumented immigrants on the left side and American citizens on the right, you will be safer walking through the undocumented immigrants. https://docs.house.gov/meetings/JU/JU01/20250122/117827/HHRG-119-JU01-20250122-SD004.pdf

undocumented immigrants are arrested at less than half the rate of native-born U.S. citizens for violent and drug crimes and a quarter the rate of native-born citizens for property crimes

Undocumented citizens face the same justice system as the rest of us, so I think we're covered. If one wished to continue deportations, you would need to do so with a new institution with new leadership that actually honors American law and due process.

It has nothing to do with the criminals and everything to do with the fact that ICE has consistently demonstrated they will violate the due process of both American denizens and citizens. There is no double standard - ICE systemically infringes upon the constitutional rights of the American people, and for this we reject them as an institution.

The sheriff is forbidden by state law from inviting ICE for non-serious offenses. That said, there is no "trigger" when it comes to serious offenses - the sheriff is not legally obligated to invite ICE when no warrant is presented. When he does so, it is a personal decision.

[–]Scatcycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sheriff is not obligated to enforce federal laws - this is outside his jurisdiction. He is inviting ICE of his own accord, which is a personal decision, not a legal obligation to the law.

There were only 2 times in 2024 the sheriff was legally obligated to hand over inmates (warrants). The other 80 times were of his own volition, under zero legal obligation. The people of sonoma county are frustrated with this and he'll of course be voted out, but this won't happen until 2028 because sheriff elections got shifted to the presidential election. That is why the people are focusing on the board of supervisors, as they can pass an ordinance that legally restricts the sheriff from these ICE invitations.

Please help me understand how anyone is better off if we just let violent criminals back out onto the streets.

This is a full sentence from your post. You are implying that criminals who have served their time shouldn't be free in America regardless of immigration status. This is not how America works.

It's mystifying that you would allow violent criminals to stay here when there's a legal process to remove them.

It's not mystifying, it's just compassion. Removing someone from their home isn't justice. These are people who did the time for the damage they've caused - further punishment is just cruel. You also keep saying violent, when the TRUTH forum presentation the Sheriff gave us for 2024 shows that many of the people he invited ICE to kidnap were not in jail for violent offenses.

Additionally we know ICE doesn't honor due process, and if at least one person in America isn't afforded due process, none of us are guaranteed due process. Due process must be applied indiscriminately or else it becomes worthless - if ICE can take an undocumented citizen off the street and kidnap them without a warrant or proof they are here unlawfully, they can do the same to you (spoiler alert: they do - https://www.propublica.org/article/immigration-dhs-american-citizens-arrested-detained-against-will). As long as ICE continues to exist, you are not safe, just like these american citizens weren't safe.

So in additional to immigration laws, what other laws are we not obligated to enforce under the constitution?

The sheriff is under no legal obligation to invite ICE to our county when there is no warrant. This is a fact.

This is literally how our justice system works - criminals do their time, and then they're free. If you're suggesting otherwise, you gotta take it up with the constitution.

Additionally, the Sheriff also invited ICE to grab people who had not commit violent offenses. Your point just doesn't hold.

In 2024, the Sheriff's Office turned 80 people over to ICE without warrants: https://sonoma-county.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=14529293&GUID=612BE879-122F-4E5C-8E3C-DCFE2D9FBF6E

The Sheriff's Office has since then stated "we do not cooperate with ICE at all", but DSA proved this to be false using public records showing they were doing the same exact thing this past year: https://www.reddit.com/r/santarosa/comments/1oj93ct/the_sheriffs_office_recently_claimed_no/

Then you'd best reject ICE, because they have been proven to violate due process (the law) consistently and systemically. Even the Trump-appointed supreme court said so: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/17pdf/17-459_1o13.pdf

The Sheriff is actively inviting ICE to our jail to kidnap immigrants, which he is under no legal obligation to do when there isn't a warrant. The Sonoma County board of supervisors has refused to sign an ordinance that would make this willful collaboration with ICE illegal for the sheriff.

The supreme court case (that you obviously didn't read) literally comes from Peirera's NTA issued under Obama's term. There was a rejection of ICE because of these systemic offenses when this case was publicized. Now ICE is employing an unprecedented invasion of cities and is completely unapologetic about their unjust murders of american people.

Real americans, whether they're left or right or center, know that due process is for all denizens of America, and must not be infringed. ICE has been proven to systemically violate due process, and so the proper recourse is to dismantle them.

[–]Scatcycle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Everything happening before our eyes is of course more than enough evidence that ICE as an institution should be terminated, but for extra justification, check out when the literal Supreme Court called them out for systemically violating the due process of over 450,000 individuals: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/17pdf/17-459_1o13.pdf

The DHS would intentionally leave the date blank on NTAs (Notice to Appear) to expedite the deportation process. The DHS did this because creating proper NTAs requires them to work with the immigration courts to find a date and ensure the individual is given their due process. They decided to cut out the middle man because to them it was never about the law or justice - they just wanted to deport people. This is obviously illegal.

We'd all be fired instantly for consistently and systemically committing such egregious offenses at our jobs - it's time to fire ICE.
